Fruvous B-Sides: Definitive List?

   Discussion: Fruvous B-Sides: Definitive List?
David A. Scott · 19 years ago
I was wondering if anyone would be interested in compiling a comprehensive (and chronological) B-Sides & Collaborations list that would cover all of the officially-released material that didn't appear on the seven official full-length albums. This would include everything that appeared on various artist comps (studio and live) and even promotional or limited-run CD's & tapes. I'm finishing up my own personal 2-CD set of studio B-sides, which should help with compiling the list, but I'm sure there are a lot of radio and live tracks that have snuck out on official discs over the years that I have not had the time to track down. I'll include my chronological studio B-sides list soon, for a starting point, then see what we can add on to that (and later, where). This could become a handy list for people trying to complete their discography.

here's a good start:

In the end, I decided to keep off the Breast tracks (which I'd still like to hear), and add, as the 60th and final track of the set, Mike's "I've Been Everywhere" cover from "Canada Needs You, Part 1" (a solo track that features all four FruLads). Here's the final list:
DISC ONE:
The Indie Tape (6 tracks)
If I Had a Million Dollars (Barenaked Ladies)
Man in a Hat (Klezmatics)
Shpayz Ikh Mir (Klezmatics)
An Undoing World (Klezmatics)
Today's the Day That We Fight Back
Shoehorn With Teeth (DaVinci's Notebook)
Jack the Giant Killer (The Nields)
I Still Believe in My Friends (The Nields)
But This Time (Dan Bryk)
Fruhead Songs 1-11
DISC TWO:
Fruhead Songs 12-41
I Will Hold On (radio edit)
Maple Syrup Time
Huge on the Luge
I've Been Everywhere (Mike Ford)
Maybe someday, they'll release that King of Spain remix (which is at least available in off-line versions). Otherwise, I think this is the definitive studio B-side/collaboration collection. However, I hope this conversation can continue by discussing all the live B-sides from Kumbaya and other discs.

How did you end up defining stuff that was produced for broadcast on the radio/muchmusic? If those were included then you missed the Baseball Song they did for NPR, Canada We Love You, Harbourmall, and the video edit of Fly. Also, since the Energy the pulse of life video is available for purchase (even now), why would that not count as a tape release?

David A. Scott Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
I basically stuck with stuff that appeared mainly on CD (except the Indie Tape, which was cassette only). Drinking Song from the indie tape is the only live track I used for this (because it appeared on a studio-release EP), but I know that other live items have appeared on compilations (i.e. Kumbaya). Anything known more for appearing on broadcast was left out. They're performances, not releases.
David A. Scott · 19 years ago
True. Alongside Amazon.com (which provided release dates for certain discs), it helped me put together my B-side compilation. I think I've got almost everything studio, with the real hard part being the chronological placement of the released *live* B-sides and comp tracks (i.e. Kumbaya, World Cafe, etc). Watch this spot....

For the reference of everyone, here's the track list I made for my own 2-CD Fruvous' group studio B-sides and collaborations collection:

The Indie Tape (6 tracks)
If I Had a Million Dollars (Barenaked Ladies)
Man in a Hat (Klezmatics)
Shpayz Ikh Mir (Klezmatics)
An Undoing World (Klezmatics)
Today's the Day That We Fight Back
Shoehorn With Teeth (DaVinci's Notebook)
I Will Hold On (radio edit)
Jack the Giant Killer (The Nields)
I Still Believe in My Friends (The Nields)
But This Time (Dan Bryk)
The Fruhead Songs (41 tracks)
Maple Syrup Time
Huge on the Luge

This is not counting live B-sides from the Kumbaya and other live CD's, or solo collaborations. This material fits onto two CD's, 77 min. average per disc. This is the most truly chronological list (by release and/or recording) I could come up with, referencing fruvous.com and amazon.com to ensure accuracy.
Mamalissa! · 18 years, 11 months ago
Should probably count as a studio release too.
David A. Scott · 18 years, 11 months ago
Did they release that on a CD, or just as ads?
Mamalissa! Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
They were PSA's that were available for purchase on a CD. I bought it but I don't remember the organization's name offhand. I did a quick search and I don't think it's available anymore.

If you want to frum me your info, I wouldn't mind sending you the original, if you'd send it back to me.

I guess it's up to you whether you'd classify it as "released material" or not.

What are you doing about the Southwest Airlines ads? Those were never available for purchase. I have a copy which doesn't cut off the ad that most people's do, but it's at least 3rd generation. I know who has the previous generation, and we suspect we know who's got the one before that, though no one's in touch with that person, as far as I know.

Whether or not those are B-Sides, I don't know, but they *are* quality.
John J. Ryan · 18 years, 11 months ago
We should include these songs as well, minus Entropy and Mitosis Waltz.
Will work for anime · 18 years, 11 months ago
Didn't they do a song on one of his CDs?
Agent Scully Back · 18 years, 10 months ago
They sing backup on "Grandma's Silverware"
David A. Scott Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
I forgot "Grandma's Silverware"? NoooOOOOOOoooooo!!! I'll have to track it down and see where I can put it, if I wish to revise the set (which I don't...but oh well).
David A. Scott Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
If I hadn't overlooked Johny Vegas, I would have easily been able to use the track, as it's on his website *for free*! (smacks forehead) Back to the drawing board....
Paul the KOA · 18 years, 11 months ago
I wonder how long it would take for a complete fruvous box set to come out.
derek harrison Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
about............never! and im an optimist. hehe
David A. Scott · 18 years, 11 months ago
I may be interested in the adding the Give Your Baby... CD to the set, since it was a CD release of sorts. Are these all PSA's with voiceover, or is the full song somewhere on the disc?

The set I'm compiling limits itself to studio group non-album recordings that were released on official tape (indie release), commercial CD (storebought and promotional/radio-only), and sanctioned download (Huge on the Luge, Fruhead songs, etc).

The songs from Energy:POL and Cracking the Code are better left in the TV Appearances category. The Southwest Airlines ad may count more as a radio appearance. Then again...the Breast song may, too. I'd have to hear it....
Mamalissa! Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
They are a couple of songs, all with the same tune but with different words. I don't recall any voice overs.

(Also, FYI, try using the Reply Button instead of the "Post a Message" Box. ;-} )
David A. Scott Back · 18 years, 11 months ago

Is there a way I could get those tracks from you somehow? If it helps, I pressed the Reply button. :-D

I'd also like to get Fruvous Frolics and Fruvous Speaks from anyone who can post it, though there is an edit of It's Too Cold (that simply truncates the beginning) that I'd like to have for completists' sake. I don't think there were "radio edits" of any other songs. The one that took me the longest to get was the I Will Hold On radio edit, the most radio editey edit of their career. And I'm always looking for upgrades on the Indie Tape. I do have the 1995 Christmas greeting...what CD is that from, and what song preceded it? Advance thanks for all info, etc.

Agent Scully Back · 18 years, 10 months ago
The christmas greeting was not from any of their CDs.

That was from a radio station promo.

I encoded to MP3 from the CD Progressions #19 Dec 95 Holiday Edition New Music for Progressive Adult Radio The maker of the CD is FMQB (Friday Morning Quarterback Album Report).
Rachel Marie aka RAI Back · 18 years, 10 months ago
Totally read that as "radio station porno."

Which doesn't make sense in any respect at all.
David A. Scott Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
Yeah, but what tracks preceded/followed it on that CD? I knows it's not a Fru-only disc.
Agent Scully Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
I'll scan the cover for you. :)
Jason · 18 years, 11 months ago
Two tracks that didn't make your list that are on the Canadian "Stuck In The '90s" single are "A Frvous Frolic" (odd sampling of Barginville clips) and "Frvous Speaks" (the boys talking about the album). Granted, they are not songs, per se, but they are B-sides.

The other one that I would add is the Christmas promo message track from 1995 that was available here several weeks ago, if you can still get it.

Did you find the "Get In The Car", "Splatter Splatter", or "Fly" singles? If yes, did they have anything besides the album version of the song (i.e., radio edits or B-sides)?
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 18 years, 8 months ago
A few people mentioned Maple Syrup Time but nobody said where to find it. It is on The Songs of Pete Seeger:
Vol. 2, If I Had a Song

A pretty cool collection with not just Fruvous but Dave and Tracy, Arlo, Joan Baez, Dar, Kim and Reggie, and Magpie to name a few.
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 18 years, 8 months ago
Fruvous has a live version of Authors on Cityfolk Live Volume 1; song recorded live at WFUV. There are also two sets up pictures of them at the website.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
I found that the pictures are hidden but you can find them here. Wow Dave with hair, that brings back memories.
John J. Ryan · 18 years, 8 months ago
