(...you only hear it when you listen to your mix tape)
Okay, some of you might've seen this before. I saw it last week or something like that on Neil Gaiman's blog.
Go get your portable MP3 player. If you don't have one, load up your entire MP3 collection currently on your hard drive. Put it on random by song. Now write down the first fifteen songs that are played, no matter how embarassing.
I'll go first:
- Stay In Love by Jim's Big Ego (Y2K Hooray mix)
- Hey Love by Stevie Wonder
- Quick by Eddie From Ohio
- Wrap Your Arms Around Me by Barenaked Ladies
- Making Contact by Bruce Cockburn
- Wait by the Beatles
- Sunday in Nandua by Karen Savoca
- Fortunate Son by Bruce Hornsby
- A Case Of You by Joni Mitchell
- Fragments by Vertical Horizon
- Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic by the Police
- Love Over Gold (live) by the Dire Straits
- Darlene by Jim's Big Ego
- All In Love Is Fair by Stevie Wonder
- The Lamia by Genesis
Hmm... looks like the RNG on my iPod kinda choked a bit towards the end there. More "love" songs than I would've expected, and I'm kinda disappointed that there's only one live track and no Guster or Peter Mulvey (despite having all of their studio albums and a handful of shows loaded at the moment).
So, what's your list look like? Remember, no editing the track list to make it pretty :-)
1. It's Alright - Big Head Todd & the Monsters
2. Cemetary Polka - Tom Waits
3. Drown - Smashing Pumpkins
4. Drunk Is Better Than Dead - The Push Stars
5. Minnesota 1945 - EFO
6. The Entertainer - Billy Joel
7. The Squirming Coil - Phish
8. Sara J - The Maggies
9. I Know You, Pt.3 - Morphine
10. Load It Up - The Maggies
11. River Valley - Moxy Fruvous
12. Needle and Thread - Russell Wolff
13. Fast Food Fantasy - Josh Woodward
14. Fast As I Can - Erin McKeown
15. Someday - The Maggies
Wow... iTunes is weird.... out of over 2300 tracks, it plays 3 maggies songs?
1: Mary Had A Little Lamb-Stevie Ray Vaughan 2: Danza-Paco De Lucia 3: Carrot Joice is Murder-Arrogant Worms 4:Una Rosa Pa Tu Pelo-Paco De Lucia and El Camaron 5:Hurricane-Bob Dylan 6: Have You Ever Seen the Rain-CCR 7: Midtown-Tom Waits 8: Istanbul-TMBG 9: Sympathy For the Devil-Rolling Stones 10: Puttin' On the Ritz-Taco 11: Lazyhead and Sleepybones-TMBG 12: On Wet Roads on Autumn Night-Ben Verdery 13: Don't Stop-Rolling Stones 14: Here Comes Santa Claus-Alvin and the Chipmunks (yeah yeah, shut up) 15: Ballad of a Thin Man-Bob Dylan Meh, I'm satisfied
I could either do this by the rules and list the first 15 tracks that come up in my 11 track MP3 library... Or I could load 25 random discs into my player, hit random, and list the first 15 tracks that play. Either way, I'm stacking the deck.
Funny, I was just loaded that up and was about to post it in my journal (sheep) when I saw it was a thread here. Of course, the first couple times I did hit random, the Dan Bern songs all grouped together to form a boring, shapeless lump, so I randomized a couple of times until it was more diverse and hopefully more embarrassing (although the sheer volume of DB stuff on my hard drive should be embarrassment enough). My list:
1. Kate Rusby - The Moon and Saint Christopher
2. Dan Bern - Superman
3. Jack Black - Let's Get It On
4. The Clash - London Calling

2. Sad Girl - Moxy Frvous
3. Sing We Now Of Christmas - The Handbells Of Saint John's York Mills
4. Somebody Bigger Than You And I - Whitney Houston

13. Buying Time - Great Big Sea
14. Rasputin - Boney M.
15. Bez solntsa: Okonchen prazdnyi shumnyi den' (The idle, noisy day is over) - Modest Musorgsky
Heh...my hard drive contains every CD I've purchased since I was 10 plus my music history exam listening (hence the classical stuff) plus a ton of torrents, explaining all the Frvous, although that doesn't explain why it had to pick When She Talks.
3. Sing We Now Of Christmas Ha. We're still playing that, only now it'sback to being called "Now the Green Blade Riseth." iTunes seems determined to portray me as someone who listens to a disproportionate amount of They Might Be Giants and very little else, and that's simply not true (I listen to a ridiculous amount of They Might Be Giants and lots else, at least when I've got a random playlist going). So when I got to ten and had more than 50% TMBG I decided to not count the TMBG songs. (They Might Be Giants - How Can I Sing Like a Girl?) (They Might Be Giants - Sapphire Bullets of Pure Love) 1. Captain Tractor - Vowel Sounds (They Might Be Giants - Hot Cha) (They Might Be Giants- Dig My Grave) 2. Queen - You're My Best Friend (1991 remix) 3. Soul Coughing - Blame 4. Cub - New York City (They Might Be Giants - I Am A Human Head) (They Might Be Giants - Weep Day) 5. Eddie From Ohio - Irish Dream 10. Moxy Frvous - The Drinking Song 11. The Nields - Nebraska 12. Barenaked Ladies - Crazy (They Might Be Giants - The Statue Got Me High) 13. Dar Williams - What Do You Love More Than Love 14. John Linnell - South Carolina 15. The Nields - Daddy's Little Girl
iTunes/iPods have very odd randomization algorithms. I think that for whatever reason, they tend to clump bands together, so it's even possible that you'd get 23 songs with absolutely no TMBG in there, too.
my iPod seems to really like Guster, though (not that I mind) - they have 46 songs out of the 3643 in the iPod, and yet I hear them all the time. a lot more than once every 79 songs.
