Give a short summary of this band ("Soft folk with a jazzy twist" for instance):
piano rock

Reviews:

Kat Kunz:

intelligent lyrics, great pop / rock melodies, and a pounding piano rhythm to boot. i adore their newest album, the unauthorized biography of reinhold messner (which is musically orchestrated much richer than the previous albums), but the self- titled debut or whatever & ever amen are probably better starting points.

Josh Woodward:

BFF rocks!

They're so much fun. "Brick" is a good song, but there's so much more to BFF than that. They have a hard edge that somehow works with the sparce instrumentation.

chris q murphy:

hooray!!!

yet another band a number of fruheads agree on!!! they seem to get better with every album - and band folds side project - 'fear of pop' - is equally incredible... look for ben folds playing the cowbell in the william shatner priceline commercial where they play 'bust a move' - i highly reccomend their second album 'whatever and ever, amen'

nate...:

Gotta love it

Ben can pound a grand piano like noone else.... and besides... what's not to love about a band that's only piano, bass and drums???

I am not THE Stacey Wong:

Wicked Awesome

Ben Folds Five makes me feel kinda funny inside... I like it!

Kate Leahy:

Mmmm . . .

Any band fronted by a guy who's in a Priceline.com commercial is okay by me :).

Bruce Rose:

Not a fan of the Five... but Ben ROCKS solo

I've never considered myself a fan of Ben Folds Five, but after hearing Rockin' The Suburbs, I may have to revisit the group catalog. Rockin' The Suburbs is beyond fabulous in every way that matters and EARNS an A+, even on my tight grading curve.

Amanda Wilson:

William Shatner has a band? ;)

BFF rocks like no other. At a show at the 9:30 Club, Ben tossed bags of M&Ms into the crowd, causing a feeding frenzy. If there's going to be a spokes- band for My Generation, I want it to be the one that says "This should cheer you up for sure/See, I've got your old ID, and you're all dressed up like the Cure."

Grace Mrowicki:

mmm...tasty, self described punk rock for sissies

Moxy Fruvous talks about how their fans are the hippies and geeks, Ben Folds Five wrote a song about all of us pushed away from the mainstream, Underground. Satirical, sweet, and smart, they have many of the same qualities that attract me to fruvous. Still no accordion, but that can come later...

not that you care:

darren jessee likes coffee...

and so i like ben folds five. cos i like coffee too. i scare Darren everytime i see him. i haev that effect on ppl. This is not a review, is it? Oh well. Just go, go and see them and you will want to touch Ben's bald spot too. OH! and get a cpy of Spare Reels. And while wtching it, try drinking coffee everytime you see Darren so that you can pretend that you are actually having coffee with him. betcha can't do it. Sledge is nuts. i *heart* bassists.

Andrea Krause:

Bouncy and meaningful, lovely and rockin'

I love BFF. Whenever I listen to them, the piano just puts this awesome hyper/happy feeling in my heart. (Even if it's a sad song) There's just something about the force and quality of the music that can get my nervous system rockin'. :) I love each album, and really go wild when this band rocks out. Woohoo! (and it's probably just me, but I think their drummer looks kinda like Chris O'Malley. :) )

m. badass:

and no more blue, yellow, or green! Yay! Also, agree with Carly on the concept-album thing. It reminds me greatly of another concept-ish album I love, Adam Guettel's Myths and Hymns. This is high praise, coming from a theatre geek such as myself.

Shelly Haefele:

I remember Lola!

I went to the RIT show w/ Tracy Bonham too... by the time they were done I was absolutely in love with them. I went right out and bought Reinhold Messner, which not only has great songs, but relates to many different aspects of my life. Ben's really down to earth too, reminds me of our Fruvous guys.

Mosch:

Fun piano rock that'll get ya goin'

I've loved these guys forever, since the days before Brick when the mentioned of their name in public drew blank stares only matched by the name 'moxy fruvous'. The early stuff is more fun, the newer stuff more polished and album oriented. A must hear for anybody whose favorite type of music is 'good music'.

bee:

rockin' with piano-y goodness

i want to be ben folds! i took piano lessons for 12 years and i am so glad that there is a group like ben folds five around. i would love to be able to do what he does with a piano.

Cameron Ross:

BFF is a great band

But this is primarily for this.... Yippie!

elizabeth:

wow

very cool stuff. top-notch

Carly Costanza:

Why?!?!

I'm going to cry...why did they break up? Why??? Oh well. I wore black to school yesterday. I'm a sad little thing, aren't I?

JK:

BF5 broke up and it sucks

They were a very good band... Ben Folds is amazingly talented and "Reinhold Messner" is one of my favourite CDs. It's a shame they broke up, but at least we got the great music that we did.

frukid:

It would figure that this band breaks up right after I start loving their music

Ok...so I lie...I liked Ben Folds Five before they broke up, I just never wanted to actually make the commitment and buy a CD. Anyway..love em, wish I could kick this much ass and still be to be able to perform with all their energy! My favorite song you ask???...hmmm....Don't change your plans, Mess, and Song For the Dumped!!

Lauren Teson:

And don't forget to give me back my black t-shirt!

Gotta love Ben Folds Five! Songs that will stick in your head...great for listening to alone or with friends when you don't feel much like talking.

Johanna Culbertson:

great songwriting

would love to see this guy live...

lawrence:

piano rock

these guys are great. imagine a rock trio with interesting lyrics and an amazing guitarist, then drop the guitarist and replace him with Ben Folds on piano. A very unique, but wonderful, sound. And they support Napster.

goovie is married!:

MIIIIIIIND

Umm...how did I never write a review here before? I thought Whatever and Ever was amazing. I thought Reinhold Messner was a masterpiece. And somehow Rockin' the Suburbs was even *better*. And now I think I've used too many superlatives for one review. So just take everyone's word for it and listen.

John J. Ryan:

Still amazes me this fella. The heir apparent to Billy Joel, though I'm sure he doesn't want to hear that!!! Rightfully so that he's packing 5,000 seat theaters now.

Rimbo:

Spec. Tac. Ular.

Birki Bazulious:

Two of my fave songs are by Ben... "Luckiest" off Rocking the Suburbs and "Philosophy" from the self titled. There's not much I can say about him and the old group that hasn't been said...they are just wonderful and ecclectic. Let my rating speak for me.

Jody:

Great band, even solo Ben Folds is Elton John but better with words.

Prince of Orange:

BFF's albums haven't held up as well as I was hoping they would over the past few years, but still, they were a very good band with a unique sound. All of their self-titled debut, about half of Whatever and Ever Amen, and two or three songs from Reinhold Messner (Army and Your Redneck Past, specifically) are really outstanding. Ben's solo material is hit and miss at best thus far. Still, better than most fluff out there.

Tori Rose:

Okay.

I love Moxy Fruvous, but Ben Folds (Five) has been my standard, all-time favorite for quite some time now. It just doesnt get old for me. Meeting Ben just made it that much better. I'm a sucker for good piano, and man can this boy pound the keys. See him live touring his latest album. Watch his fingers. They literally fly.
