...and besides, how are you going to get service on a desert island? :-P

Personally I'd want a boat, a plane, or a transporter beam.

A Verizen cell phone, specifically...you can get service with them anywhere, right? That way I could hopefully get rescued before I died of thirst. :)
A girl named Becca Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
So...would that be, like, a date?
Michael (foof) Maki Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
Well, at least I'd die happy...

One of my "I can't think of anything to submit a poll about and I'm bored while at work.." polls got used!
:D

*laughs & falls off chair* you're kidding, right? i work for them & even i don't buy that. it's amazing what a good marketing department & ad agency can do. but honestly, unless this desert island has it's own tower & is about <3 miles from the next tower... that phone will make a nice souvenir next to your corpse. i also hear that dying of thirst or starvation is a fairly nasty way to go... good luck with that.

Actually, in New England, they rock the socks.... don't know about the rest of the country... but I have yet to find a place where I don't have coverage.... even up in the remote hilltowns.

The thing that really impressed me was being out on a cruise ship in the middle of the ocean and a verizon cell phone still having coverage. :D
nate... Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
Probably not.. just lots and lots of sex.
:D
A girl named Becca Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
So, see? It might reach a desert island, too. :P (Though I was essentially kidding.)

Wouldn't this make a great Verizen commercial, though? The "can you hear me now?" guy walking around the perimeter of a tiny island in the middle of nowhere?

Heehee!

I was going to say the same thing! You've got to be kidding?!

Verizon????

hahahahahahahahahahahahaha*gasp*hahahahahahahahahaha!!!!
Starfox Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
That's probably due to the cruise ship having a microcell base station on board with a satellite hookup. It's becoming more common as people want ways to communicate and have their cell phone even in the dumbest of places.
Agent Scully Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
Probably because the people who live there get money for having Cell towers on their property from the companies as a "rental fee." Some get paid over $700-1000 per month to have them. There are most likely more towers around to pick up the signals depending on where you are. MA is notorious for doing "Weird things" with their land, mortgages and property. I've never seen so many screw up with searches of land, mortgages and property as I have in MA and the other state is PA. CA is next on my list with searches that only go back two years instead of updating to 20 or 30 years.

This may be over your head. I've worked in partial release of mortgage premises and a land title insurance company to see what the cell companies do. Also, they have contracts with water companies to put their towers on water towers as well. That takes time to do - sometimes the cell companies go ahead and put the towers up and THEN contact the parties involved expecting them to do everything they want them to do without getting the permission beforehand. I've seen that happend with one cell company who thought they were above the contracts.

Work in a bank for one day in the mortgage department to see these people, who have mortgaged property who think they can just have these towers without asking the bank for permission (as stated in the mortgage contract which apparently no one reads). You don't own the house or land, the bank does until you pay off your mortgage. Or even then a utility company, especially a water company's legal department that draws up these cell tower agreements.

Ahh...my rant for today. In closing, stupid people shouldn't take out mortgages as shown by my former employer servicing the mortgages from c, d, x, y, z lenders (people whose credit is so bad, they get high interest mortgages and handwritten, horribly worded documents). When I speak with these people, they can't even speak a complete sentence, let alone understand what they signed when they bought their house. Yeesh!
nate... Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
And to respond to that.
I like having good cell coverage.
so go them!
:D
Agent Scully Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
My response - some new england states are pretty f'ed up when it comes to this type of thing - property laws, mortgages/mortgage clauses, surveys, searches etc.

Doesn't mean that with more cell towers up, they did it with the "legal" means. They may have went around some things to get them up which sometimes forces other entities to sign their contracts - it doesn't mean those entities have to, but they will have to bend backwards to figure out how to satisfy the tower in the area.

On the other hand, my cell phone with "Frontier" out of WNY had a signal in Burk's Falls Ontario in the middle of nowhere. Are there that many cell towers up there to pick up a signal in the woods? But when I took that same phone to NYC 5 months later, I couldn't get a signal for anything. Figure that one out.
nate... Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
Frontier was bought by Verizon wireless... *nodsnods*
They had weird coverage out that way.

My sister actually used to work for them, and now, subsequently, works for Verizon.
Agent Scully Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
They were weird.

I couldn't call another Verizon cell phone in Canada (person to person - same area code) but could call home.

I dumped them after my contract was up.
nate... Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
Huh.. they didn't get better after Verizon bought them?
I thought they had.

Amen!!!
Agent Scully Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
I chose the same one for the same reason! :)
Agent Scully Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
Nope, and they didn't really care that I left. It was like "Cancel? Okay. You're done."

But while I was in Canada, the only stupid thing they did do was not charge me for some calls I know I made there while my dad was hospitalized.

I remember the times I called home, and they weren't on my bill. So they missed out on a 30 minute call/roaming/international charge. =D Dumb [bleeps].

Oh Emilie...Jose Chung was on TV the other night. :D

"Well you really [bleeped] that one up!"

I chose the 12 people as well, but for the simple reason that there's a possibility that they brought food, water, tools, and whatnot. Besides, Tom Hanks proved you can survive the situation. It would have been better for his sanity with real people, though, instead of a volleyball.
