   Discussion: stephen lynch?

apparently he's coming to kalamazoo in a couple weeks, and it's being hyped up because he's a western michigan university (which is in kalamazoo) grad. i'm toying with the idea of going. anyone heard of him? or rather, would anyone recommend him?

i just asked my friend who is from Michigan and she said he is mainly a comedy singer and he sings a song about how you feel better after you kill a kitten. she says he is evil. but that is her opinion!

Melinda hasn't seen this thread? She's heard his concerts. His humor is dark and gross, but also very funny. Sometimes he seems as if he is going to reach a poignant moment, and then he turns it into humor before going there. Those of us who know him wish he would go farther and be more than just funny. He is a gifted performer. He played Jesus when we directed a summer stock performance of GODSPELL. I haven't heard any of his songs in a few years.......but I doubt he has changed his style. If you aren't easily grossed or offended, I think you'll have a grand time.

heh, i hadn't seen it. his songs are definitely very funny. interesting that mom mentions the jesus thing... i guess for both of us that was when we got to know him the best (i was in the show with him), yet i never did feel that i got to know him even after days and days spent with him in a very intense situation. that is kind of how i feel about his music too. it is great that he is so funny... but i find myself wishing for just one tiny moment of sincerity... just one glimpse of the real guy behind it all. i think that mystery was maybe a strength when he was playing jesus... he was charismatic and compelling, and on stage we would have followed him into anything, but we didn't really understand him. we never knew who he was. i think that worked for the show. now he performs his own material and i still don't know who he is. i would love to hear him sing one song that was really from the heart.

that's my opinion anyway... if you like well-performed comedy songs with a dark side, you will like stephen lynch. if you are looking for something to really speak to your heart, you may not. that having been said, go out and support him if you can. i'm proud of our hometown boy and how far he's come. :)
