Discussion: Who has the best fast food fries?
nate... · 20 years, 9 months ago
I *know* I didn't have those small random chains like kfc and hardee's in there.

Josh: no fair messin wid me.
lawrence Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
KFC is small and random?
nate... Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Well, it hardly fits MY definition of "fast food".

that being... burger and fries joint.

*shrugs*

Nobody thinks "fries" when they think KFC.... (in fact.... this is my first clue that they HAD fries.)

lawrence Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
well, maybe it was a trick question? maybe they don't have fries, so its inclusion in the poll was meant to be a red herring. :)
nate... Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
doh!
I didn't even think of that.

Hrm.

Um...I thought a "fast food" place was one where you could go up to the counter and get food with little or no waiting. Hence the term "fast food."
Beth Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

Well, I don't think of "fries" but I do think of how KFC has taties. (Whoa, I just said "taties" {g}) When I get a combo meal and I get to pick two sides, I choose cole slaw and potato wedges. Potato wedges count as fries. That is my decision.

And I chose "other," because, while I enjoy all of those other kinds of fries, my favorite comes from Checkers.

AshTon's.

Poutine rocks the house. ;)
Paul D. Beasi Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
But how are the fries alone without all the yummy goodness on them? I must say I've never had them that way. :)

Damn right about the poutine, though.
ellen, formerly evil Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I don't care how the fries are without theyummy goodness, because I don't like fries. So, here I am, trying to instigate revolution... or something.
Paul D. Beasi Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Hey if you can get the US chains to carry poutine, all the power to you!

:)
nate... Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Amen!
mmmmm... poutine.
Laura P. Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

what is poutine? I'm almost afraid to ask.

Yvonne Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Fries with cheese and gravy. It's a French invention, I believe. Apparently it's really good in Montreal. I've never tried it but I hear it's good. It scares me.
bored, bored, bored.... Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Cheese *curds* and gravy.....kinda icky, in my opinion. I'm a BAD Canadian *g*
J · 20 years, 9 months ago
all the places listed use Eggs in their fries.....thats so wrong and unvegan
lawrence Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
it's only wrong if you're vegan.
Paul D. Beasi Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Um... they do?

Let's see I already knew McDonald's had beef flavoring in them (so all you veggies out there, um, you might want to stay away) but eggs? Here are the ingredients listed on their web page:

French Fries: Potatoes, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, natural flavor (beef source), dextrose, sodium acid pyrophosphate (to preserve natural color). Cooked in partially hydrogenated vegetable oils (may contain partially hydrogenated soybean oil and/or partially hydrogenated corn oil and/or partially hydrogenated canola oil and/or cottonseed oil and/or sunflower oil and/or corn oil). TBHQ and citric acid added to help preserve freshness. Dimethylpolysiloxane added as an anti-foaming agent.

Wendy's says:

Potatoes, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Dextrose, Disodium Dihydrogen Pyrophosphate (color protector). Cooked in: Hydrogenated Corn and Soybean Oil.

But, they warn that they COULD be cooked in the same oil as the chicken nuggets.

Burger King states:

Potatoes, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Modified Potato Starch, Rice Flour, Potato Dextrin, Salt, Leavening (Disodium Dihydrogen Pyrophosphate, Sodium Bicarbonate), Sunflower Oil, Dextrose, Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate added to preserve natural color, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Xanthan Gum, Thiamine Hydrochloride, Medium Chain Triglycerides, Smoke Flavor.

KFC's website kind of sucks and I couldn't find anything.

However, this site lists Burger King, KFC, and Wendy's as having Vegan friendly fries. Obviously not McDonalds.

----

Obviously this is US data. So unless Canadians are putting eggs in their fries, I'm curious where you got your data.

(For the record, I miss the old days when they cooked the fries in lard. Yum!)

nate... Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I'd tend to agree with stated data.

If for no other reason than.... why on EARTH would they use eggs in their fries?
That's a needless and useless expense.

J Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
it may be different in Canada than in the States.
they use it in the batter.

As for why they do it who the hell knows ...same reason why they put Whey and milk powder in everything
nate... Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
batter for fries?
*puzzled look*
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I dunno. Fries like the ones I hate at Burger King have batter. And some other places. To give them a little substance. But places that have straight fries that are, like, potatoes...there shouldn't be an egg problem there, I would think.
J Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
they should just be simple and use potatoes...how about NY Fries they are good
George E. Nowik · 20 years, 9 months ago

jack in the box or arby's curly fries. oh yes.

poutine doesn't count because you must have all the other goodies.

-= george =-

ChrisChin is Getting Old Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

mmmmm....arby's curly fries. most definitely! I do however miss the waffle friesthat were served in the law school cafeteria in college. Those were some yummy bits of crispy goodness.

"Ah, ya got Arby's all o'er me."

Twisted Crystalline Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Wow! You are so right on that one. mmm curly fries.
Beth Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

I've never been to a Jack in the Box in my whole life. There are none in this area. But oh yes, I forgot all about Arby's fries. Regular ones, not curly. Them boys is tasty. {g}

Oh man, they're tearing down an Arby's near my town in order to put up a new Arby's.

Annika · 20 years, 9 months ago
Duuuude... *drool* An order of fries, and deep fried mushrooms and i'm in heaven.
no one · 20 years, 9 months ago
The last time I went to one of those joints was when my daughter dragged me into one. I had a coke while she ate something that was alleged to be food. About 15 years ago. So, yeah, where is the insensitive clod option?
Kat Kunz Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

i agree:

"i don't eat fries, you insensitive clod!"

feh. i'll be cholesterol- and indigestion-free over in this corner, thanks. :D

Deanna Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I second that one and am pleased to note I am not alone. Everyone always looks at me as though I'm unAmerican when I say I don't like fries (or maybe its because I don't like potatoes in any fashion!).
no one Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Everyone is just so wrong. After all, you don't eat french fries. Now, if you refused to eat freedom fries, you might have a problem.
sheryls Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

I also do not eat fries, however i voted "other" because back when i did, nothing beat Cedar Point's fries - or Steak Escape.

The atkin's diet has put me off fries, and i really don't miss them at all. If i nab fast food, i usually get something with a vast amount of meat in it, remove the bun, get a side caeser with it (mcd's, wendy's, boston market, and arby's all have them - if BK does, i don't know because i hate their burgers) and people just kind of look at me funny.

but i don't care.

Yvonne Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

As do I.

I DON'T EAT FRIES, YOU INSENSITIVE CLOD!!!

Heh. Sorry...

It's not only because I'm vegetarian and can never be sure if the fries are, it's also to avoid putting on weight and dying of heart attacks and stuff.

sheryls Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

it's an excellent way to avoid putting on weight. i think alot of people would be surprised to find out how much weight they'd lose if they just cut a few things out:

1. Fries (and baked potatoes, chips, and other potato side dishes - most restaurants will substitute veggies or salads)
2. Regular Soda
3. Sugary snacks
4. Fast food in general

Several peoplehere at my workplace (myself included) have lost a ton of weight avoiding these things (maybe not alltogether, but like instead of having these things once a week, having them once a month, etc).

Yvonne Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I gave up fries, doughnuts and potato chips to lose weight (and not die of cancer or something). I wanted to give up ice cream and cheese too, but it's just too difficult. So I try to cut back as much as possible and only have ice cream once or twice a month...and get the fat free stuff. Yay fat free! I think it still has the calories, but it won't give me a heart attack at least.
nate... · 20 years, 9 months ago
How can micky dee's be winning!?!

They have the WORST out of the lot!
Greasy, skinny, oversalted, soggy.

Ugh.
lawrence Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Greasy, skinny, oversalted, soggy.

well, one out of four, yes. and skinny is a good thing.
nate... Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
naw, I like steak fries.... not dripping in grease.... not drooping when you go to pick them up... and actually less salty than deer bait.

;)
lawrence Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
er, no, my point was more that I've not experienced those characteristics when eating McDonald's fries. if they drain them properly, they are soft, but not drooping or soggy.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

They're my favorite. I like skinny fries, I live on salt, I don't like my fries too crunchy, etc.

HATE HATE HATE Burger King fries after they started putting that nasty coating on them. They say everyone loves the taste of their fries with it on, but ugh.

lawrence Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
yeah, I find any fries with any sort of coating pretty unappetizing. same with curly fries or waffle cut fries. everyone seems to be all about those, too, and I just don't see it.
nate... Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I'm with that... I like my fries natural.... looove for the steakfries, baby!
Talcott Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
McDonalds has the best fries when, and only when they are hot. As soon as they cool, they become a soggy mess of not-good-ness.

I need to find somewhere to get Poutine too. I was veggie when I discovered it, and they don't tend to have it in Ohio now that I'm not so much of the veggie type. (of course, they probably didn't have it in ohio before hand either)
sheryls Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

make it!

step 1: make fries.

step 2: make gravy

step 3: buy cheese curds (or mozzerella)

step 4: combine. :D

Arbie · 20 years, 9 months ago

Around here we have a chain called New York Fries. Very yummy. Used to be even better before they got into the franchising big time.

Their poutine is only so-so however.

John J. Ryan · 20 years, 9 months ago
Believe it or not, it's at the Hillsdale Diner in Hillsdale, NY, right outside of Falcon Ridge. It's the diner on the corner of the single traffic light in Hillsdale. I ate there the weekend before Falcon Ridge and the fries were heavenly.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Is a diner really considered fast food though?
John J. Ryan Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Not really. I just wanted to mention the fact they have the best fries I have ever tasted.
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 20 years, 9 months ago
The best fries are at Nathans. They are deeply ridged, golden brown, and perfect.

Of the places mentioned KFC is the best.

Of the burger joints strangely enough the best is White Castle. I won't eat their burgers but I stop there for fries.
Mamalissa! · 20 years, 9 months ago
I'm a fan of Roy Rogers spicey curley fries. I only get them at high-way rest-stops, though, and it could just be the hunger of the road-trip that makes 'em so good.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

Spicy fries are always grody to me. It makes me very bitter when I'm somewhere and they ONLY serve spicy fries. Like the Iron Horse. *pout* So I get tortilla chips substituted if I have a dish that comes with fries.

sheryls Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

like rally's!

when i was in japan they told me one night they were taking me to Rally's, and i needed to dress up.

wtf. i'm like, rally's? dress up?

turned out it was a chain of yaki-niku restaurants, and it was pretty nice.

still made me giggle though - like, "rally's? the drive thru burger joint?"

Fries, yuck (you insensitive clod)!

Nik Chaikin · 20 years, 9 months ago
Mmmm, grease laiden golden god food.
Rachel Beck · 20 years, 9 months ago
The home fries at Lou Henri's in Iowa City are a thing of beauty. Peppers and onions and potatoes, nicely seasoned with salt and pepper and served with a side of salsa. Best fries I've ever had, plus they're vegetarian.
Rachel Marie aka RAI · 20 years, 9 months ago
The food here at the University of Rochester is crap... except the fries! The fries here are perfectly crispy and have just the right amount of salt and are so yummy.

But yeah, other than that, the food's crap.
