I don't usually do this, and tho i'm out of the loop I'm sure I'm breaking some kinda rule or something in requesting... but I'm looking to see if anyone knows where I might find a copy of a particular Fruvous show. I tried to look through the tape trading page and couldn't find it. its the 2 June 2000 show at The Vault in Baltimore... Mike Errico opened for them.

feel free to frumsg me... and if you're gonna flame me, well... nutz to you in advance j/k

Angie

angie, i've been looking for a tape of that show since it happened. if you have any luck, please let me know, because i'd love a copy.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I just want a tape of the captain dismissing us :-)
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
hee! no, thanks.

ooh, how about a tape of the chick who played right before mike? :D
angelmusicmaven Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

Angie, Anyone who would flame you is a LOOOOOOOOOSER!!! ;)

Plus, the tape trader lists are getting kind of old and they're awfully long to just go looking for one thing.

That being said, if anyone who's in any position to trade in the near future has any solo Jian show with "All the Young Dudes" in the setlist, PLEASE contact me. I do have a fair amount of Fruvous on tape (not this elusive Balt. show, of course) or I can whip something up for you with all sorts of musical goodies... thanks... over and out...

Sarah Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I've been going through the lists myself and am sad nobody has the video of I Will Hold On.
Yvonne Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

OMG I want that video!!!

*cries*

Sarah Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
That is my favorite video they did
Yvonne Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

Me too. And I found the buildings in that video this summer. They're somewhere around York St. and King St. in Toronto. I want the video!!

*cries again*

Sarah Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Thank you! *Raises hands in the air* I've always wondered where those were. Is that also the one that looks like it has pieces of it cut out? I would love to see that building in person.

I am so determined to find that video. Watching it on the computer with dial up just isn't the same :-(
Yvonne Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Yeah, those are the ones. They're across from each other like a mirror image and look like they've had vertical pieces cut out on one part and then...it's hard to describe but yeah, those are the ones. I was just randomly walking up York St. and saw them and I thought, oh, those are neat, and it took me a second to realize they were the ones from the video. I can't even get my computer to playthe videoover the web anymore...argh...
Sarah Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I tried looking for what buildings they could be online. The closest I could find was the Sears tower and figured it couldn't be that because, well, it's not Toronto. I love the way they had everyone show up in the side of the building, THAT was cool. Do you happen to know what's in those buildings?
Yvonne Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Sun Life Financial. That's what one of them said when I went past them today. They're at 150 and 200 King St. West, on the north side, on either side of University Ave. (one of them is between University and York, that's why I thought it was York St. until I went back and checked today). If you go around to the back of the west building, I think that's where they shot some of the video...the part in front of the wall. The buildingslook pretty cool on all sides, I took a walk around them.
Sarah Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Thanks a bunch. Definately one road trip someday will include going to see that :-)
A.J. Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
It's so funnny that you guys are "discovering" this. You really represent a new generation of fans that fruvous has attracted despite the hiatus. The reason that it is so funny, is because some of the people who are on FHDC frequently not only know where the buildings are, but were actually in the video. Those are all fruheads you see walking around.

It is cute that you guys like the video so much and are interested in the buildings. Personally I have to say I hate that video and think it is THE WORST one they did. It is stupid and pointless and full of meaningess artifice for art's sake.

Don't go thinking that it was some great piece of Fruvous art. The whole thing was conceived and designed by the production company that made it. The guys just showed up and did what they were told. Fruvous has never been very interested in the video art form unfortunately. That is too bad, because they could be good at it if they bothered to put in the effort.
Sarah Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I find your whole superiority complex cute but in the end it only makes you look like a jackass
danced with Lazlo Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
um... i can see how you might misinterpret AJ's words, but he's really not being a jackass, he's being honest. I wasn't going to say anything, but I giggled to myself when I saw you guys in this thread talking about the buildings etc... when we watch the video we're saying "Ok, There's MikeWood, There's MC..."

As for fruvous vids not being high art... well, that's just fact. Some are better than others. IWHO is certainly not their best. My favorite is Authors cause its zany and cute... I also like Down From Above cause it's so freaking bizarre and cause it started the Garbanzo cult. It's fine that you like the IWHO video. I like it too, but mainly for the fruhead content. I think you may be overreacting to AJ just a little.
Agent Scully Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Or "there is the little blonde girl they (jian?) found at a show in 1999 and decided to use her in the video."

Yup, that's what I think too. I giggle when I see Mike or mcee or whomever else I can recognize in that video. :) I'm sure a few of us could've told you where the buildings were. There was an open call for extras in the video in 1999. I may still have the email of my time and where I was supposed to show up at.
A.J. Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Yeah, as Gella said, I'm not trying to be smug or superior at all. Just truthful. BTW I didn't mean to imply that *I* was one of the people in the video, I'm wasn't. And it was no great honor to be in it. One just showed up. My only point about that was that lots of people already knew where the buildings were, because they were in the video, so it was funny watching you guys unravel the "mystery."

Believe me, I don't consider myself "superior" to anybody here. I am a big proponant of the idea that fandom moves in phases, and that EVERYONE goes through them.
Sarah Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
My bad, I apologize for the misunderstanding. The way it was worded it was REALLY hard to tell otherwise.
I do have to disagree though with the video, yes, it was a "simple" concept but I think visually it was really well done.
As far as the "mystery", I've been to Toronto once, when I was twelve. I live in an area where a "big building" is an old farm house. Being interested in drafting I found the look of the building interesting and definately something I would love to see in person. I saw the CN Tower but my trip to Toronto was for a band competition and even though we had a full agenda, it was all touristy spots and very quick, would have loved to see more of the city.
As far as the fan phases. I totally agree. I am a fan of a musician from the 70's. I discovered his music in the early 90's and I've been through the whole "oh how cute, a YOUNG fan" thing for about 7 years. (I get a bit on the defensive with that at times). I love the idea that someone is always "discovering" music, no matter how old it is. I've run a website about this musician and a band he had and I've even gotten attention from him and the band.
Yvonne Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

It's funny though, because I've actually been a Frvous fan since about age 11, just didn't really listen to them that much 'till after the hiatus. I don't disagree with your point about the video being meaningless as an art form, just thought Jian looked really cute in it. :P

I wasn't really searching for the buildings, I happened to come across them while walking around downtown in July (not too coincidental seeing as I live here and walk around downtown often) and recognized them from the video. Heh...reading over my posts I realize I probably sounded like I was discovering something totally amazing and new but I actually just went back to check exactly where they were after getting off a greyhound bus three blocks away and having half an hour to kill because I got into the city early. Heh...I do want the video though. Jian's pretty cute... ;)

Sarah Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
A friend of mine got me into Fruvous 2 years ago. I wasn't all that impressed at first, not something I normally would have listened to. Then I found myself playing the MP3s quite a bit and buying their CD's. I was obviously hooked.
I definately want the video too. IWHO and Fly are my favorite songs (and videos along with KOS).
A friend of mine and I were talking a while back about a road trip to Toronto. I gotta take a vacation from Maine sometime.

i was a fishgirl, too, once upon a time. but i have no excuse. i was 21.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Me too. And about the same age. :) Man you shoulda seen the ratio of Jian:Everyone Else pictures whenever we developed our film.
A.J. Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Ok, so wait should you guys be working on a book called "Confessions of a Fishgirl?"
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

The thing is we probably all shared the same disdain for the fishgirls who were all open and flaunty about it. :)

Agent Scully Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Why is that I think of "twinkie" when you say fishgirl?
Yvonne Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

Quoi?!?!?!?

Ooooh... that was the best show *ever*...

except for the one two days later ;)

*sigh* still perhaps the happiest weekend of my life.

Oh great, now I'm gonna cry. Thanks a lot Angie. :P

Remember the moon and the fireworks? *hugs*
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
that was a wonderful weekend. first full weekend i spent with gordon and shelly, first time i hung out with leah and gella, first folk festival, first fruhead jam session (singing dar and ani and indigo girls on lori's porch), asking fruvous about muppets...good times, good times.
danced with Lazlo Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
heee.... we were out there with the guitars singing, and I looked in the window into Lori's house and there was Murray... in Lori's house... and he saw me and smiled and waved... and I thought... "This is *SO* ass-backwards... this is just fucked up!"

We had Pizza and Angie did a couple of Tarot readings the night before... there were chocolate covered espresso beans and Leah and I got into them and Lori was like "Those are for JIAN!" and Lori made me Jasmine tea and I stayed up late with Amanda Potter and I talked to Dave about religion while he ate shrimp...

And there was Goovie

*sigh*

goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
oh, lord, the chocolate covered espresso beans. i definitely od'd on those. shelly and i bounced off the walls the whole way home to fredneck, singing "believe" and "dancing queen." and gordon kept crashing into things and insisting he could see in the dark, and going, "I CAN'T SLEEP WHEN PEOPLE WERE TALKING!" and we were going to steal his underwear and hide it in jian's drumkit. and gordon and i spent that day in neuroworld philly and bought shelly a big ernie doll, which we hid in her car. and i spent half the weekend in a total sappy daze cos neal and i had just really become "official" right before i left for the trip. :)
Bender Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

That weekend was amazing for me, too, but frustrating at times. I was sitting up in the little room, and I heard that bassline... "Goddamn you lungs, bronchial tubes... they're playing SAHARA!!! I hate you."

goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
*hugs* poor leah. i kept thinking of what that weekend was like for you, while i was dealing with strep at this year's frff.
Bender Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
let's make our own circus. just like mickey rooney and judy garland. ponies and everything.
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
"corky, life isn't always a circus."
"but maybe it would be better if it WAS!"
stealthlori Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

Everytime I drive past that office park I still get goosebumps thinking about the fireworks ... well, that and the rest of the weekend.

Snarki_Fru · 20 years, 9 months ago
was that the angry woman? the whiney one with guitar that made the bad drummer joke at... Alfred U i think? the one who won my vote for Worst Opener Ever (TM) ;)
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
she was an angry woman...her name was kim. and she sucked. that's all i remember about her. :)
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Better than me, I don't remember her existing. After shanwrong all bad openers pale in comparison.
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
you don't remember her existing because we all talked thru her whole set. not especially polite, but she wasn't especially worth listening to. :)
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Wow we didn't even talk all through shanwrong. Of course we were afraid she'd torture us if we did.

2. This is from Jude:

"Hello everyone!

I have an exciting request for folks that can be in the Toronto area on Wednesday, September 8th. The lads are shooting the video for "I Will Hold On" with Blackwalk Productions and need about 20 extras.

Anyone who can donate their services for the entire day, and who is interested should please email me directly ([email protected]) and I will be compiling a list. We have a limited number of spaces to be filled, so I'm only able to take the first 20 people who can commit to the day.

Thank you very much. We're looking forward to the new Fruvous video.
