Ugh. :(

This article seems to have a few specifics on the situation. I'm so, so sad.

Ugh.
Phoenix · 20 years, 9 months ago
that's so incredibly sad. And I thought this day couldn't get any worse ;-(
J · 20 years, 9 months ago
Who the hell stabs themself?! and who was he? I've never even heard of the dude.
nate... Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Well, read the article, for one.

He was an amazingly talented singer/songwriter.

Wrote some of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
Hell of a nice guy, from what I've heard, though I never met him myself.
Mark Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I'm glad I'm not the only one who's never heard of him... I read a couple of articles, and I still have no idea who he was.

nate... Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Hey Mark.
I'd suggest checking out XO, if you're curious.

It's a great album. Also, if you'd like, I can sling you an mp3 or somethin.. drop me a frum.

Thanks for not being an insensitive prick like julie.
Zach Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I think the Good Will Hunting soundtrack has some of his very best songs on it. Check that out. It's brilliant and beautiful.
J Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
love you to natey!
I really didn't think I was being insensitive, they were serious questions. PRICK!
nate... Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Sorry if I misread.

The "whatever" sounded to me like, "who fucking cares that he's dead?"

J Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
sorry maybe it should have been Whoever.
I don't really know who he is though so I don't know what the big deal is...thats where the whatever came from.
nate... Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
well, alright, I guess that was part of my issue.

Just because you don't know the guy... does that make his death, at 34, any less of a sad thing?

I mean, most everyone in this world has people who love them.... so giving their death a "whatever" is just disrespectful, IMO.
Zach Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Jesus, ease off. A wonderful musician takes his own life, at 34, and some people are upset. If anyone dies and it seems to have meaning to others, I would not dismiss it without a care, especially not publicly, nor would I call any of those affected a prick for taking offense. Think about your words before you post them.
J Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
if anyone dies it is going to have meaning to someone. Millions of people are disregarded everyday when they jump infront of the subway or off bridges ok maybe not millions but lots of people. Why is it so important that some musician killed himself if it were anyone else they wouldn't report it in a news paper even.
nate... Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Yes, and that is sad.

So your solution to that is to try and cause even those few who ARE recognized to be disrespected?

Jºnªthªn Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I can understand that you haven't heard his music, but do you have to dismiss him with a "whatever?" A lot of people, many on this site, have been touched by his music, and your ignorance is no excuse for disrespecting his memory.

Elliott had a lot to offer the world, and I am saddened that he didn't see that.
J · 20 years, 9 months ago
Maybe I just don't have respect for people that stab themselves, shoot themselves or what ever else if it makes me a prick oh fucking well.
Beth Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

Wow. Maybe it does make you a prick. I'm a little sorry for saying so, but yeah. He maybe gone, and he probably wouldn't have cared what you thought, but he left behind fans and other people who loved him, and it's their feelings that you could be hurting, not his.

I find it really painful to think that in his life (and in everyone else's who's committed suicide) that he felt so very bad, and that he must have felt he had no better alternative.

I was only slightly familiar with his music. I had been meaning for a couple years to buy a CD or two or all of them, but there are so many CDs and so little money. The only song I really knew wellwas "Waltz #2" but I found--and still find--it very beautiful and moving.

Ugh, indeed. :(

I almost don't know what to say.

almost.

I feel kind of sad for you because you apparently cannot feel sympathy for people who are off kilter, off ballence and otherwise disaranged. for some people suicide attempts are a selfish thing or a cry for help etc. but for the majority of thoes who sucseed in the venture, its the only forseeable way to relieve themselves of such excrusheating despair and sadness the likes of which you can't possibly imagine.... otherwise you would be a little more understanding.

the selfish ones need something wether it be a kick in the pants or love. the cry for help should be answered and the poor souls who pass on deserve our respect, if nothing else. as for me I'll give him: my joy in his music, my sypathy in his sadness, my positive thoughts for whats next for him and the hope for his eventual peace.

our feelings deserve your respect too. as I respect yours.

You don't have respect for people who are in pain and despair so heinous they can't conceptualize a way out?

Wow. Just, wow.

If you haven't read what Margaret Cho wrote on Elliot Smith in her blog you should do so right now. It's incredibly moving.
Mollie Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Thanks for sharing that. It brought all my tears back.
Jºnªthªn Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Mee too, and I'm at work, weepy and feeling embarassed. Oh well.
Phoenix Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
same here.I found it on the net during lunch break at work but wasn't really able to finish reading it there. Finished it when I was home again. Oh my.
nate... Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
