Discussion: did you go to your prom?
Melinda J. Beasi · 22 years ago
okay, i DID go to my prom, yes indeedy... with my awful pink dress (only slightly less awful than my hairdo) and my gay best friend who came home from college for the occasion as my date. he knew no one there, and the one couple we'd planned to meet there didn't arrive until it was almost over.

oh yeah, and it was the 80's. that should speak for itself.

it was really nice of him to take me to my prom, but he could have come for a visit and just hung around and watched movies with me and we probably would have had a much better time. ah well.

I was a prom junkie. I went to 5 of them. 4 at other schools and my own senior prom. (I skipped my junior prom though...it was lame...and I know because I too helped plan it.)

I hate to dance...I'm shy and don't socialize well...but darnit, I love the chance to dress up. Plus, it made me feel special that people wanted to take me to proms. And back then I needed any bit of special-feeling I could get. (Hell, I still do.)

well, not really, but...I couldn't pass up an opportunity to get plastered in makeup. my school has it's prom every year in February. Which is odd, but so is everything about my school. so far, I've been to two...the first one was mediocre. Twas nothing really special, and kinda boring. This year's was better, because it involved Ian....and my dress was really cute. And it involved Ian. yeah. I don't plan to go to this year's though...coz I believe it falls on FruCon weekend, and there's no way in fluffy hell I'm missing that.

My school didn't have a prom. Part of me is happy because I'd probably have not gone and felt left out. It might have been good if we did though. Maybe I'd have had enough nerve to ask Cheryl to it and maybe she'd have said yes.

i almost asked somebody, i really did. but i chickened out. actually, i had two somebodies i wanted to ask, but one went to another school and i thought be'd be too uncomfortable, and one was a pipsqueak freshman (don't ask me, i don't control my hormones). i think the main reason i skipped was that most of my friends were underclassmen at that point, and i was really sick of everyone in the entire senior class. :)

I obsessed about it, planned for it. I looked great, had a really cool black dress. But the whole thing sucked, once it played out. Well, after we had a giant photo session in my front yard. I was vain enough to really enjoy that.

I went to both Junior and Senior proms, and enjoyed the former far better. I had a date to the Junior prom (now I can laugh, he had a mullet) who turned out to have a crush on my lesbian best friend. What a life. :)

I went stag to my senior prom, and it mostly sucked, partly 'cuz I was alone, but partly because the food and the music were terrible. Oh, and I never got to ride in a limo...

I liked the getting dressed up part of prom- I absolutely loved my dress. But the whole day was hectic-- I couldn't get my contacts in and refused to wear glasses, so I had to go over to Pearle Vision to get them put in, like 10 minutes before my date was due to show up. I told him I'd meet him at the restaurant, which meant there were no prom pics taken in the living room or any of that.

When we actually got to the prom a while later, the dance floor was pumping with some, um, kickin' Vanilla Ice-- and the music went downhill from there. The line for pics was a mile long, so we decide to skip it and opted to go with the guy with the professional looking camera who said he was taking photos for yearbook but he'd get some doubles. Of course, five minutes later, we noticed he wasn't so much photographing prom as he was zooming his lens down the front of girl's dresses and someone said "I don't even think he goes to our school!" We never did get pictures.

I kind of felt like "I was hyped for this? This sucks!"

But after prom, my friends and I all went to my best friend's house where we hung out, laughed, sang songs, and played with glowsticks on the bridge over the pond until the sun came up. Then we went inside and had mass quantities of blueberry pancakes her mom had just made for us. Come to think of it, after Prom had sort of a budgiedome feel to it. And that beats a school dance any day.

Prom is short for promenade. Promenade means walk. It carries connotations of walking around to be seen, like runway walk. Seeing as how I had no pretty clothes... um... ever, and usually hid under a black trenchcoat in high school so as not to be seen, prom was definitely not for me. Besides, I didn't like the whole princess/wedding mentality harbored by most girls when it comes to the subject of proms. It perpetuates certain norms and expectations and associations which I feel are harmful to society at large. I didn't even keep track of when prom night was so I have no idea what I did the night of instead of going to the prom. Yah.

Wow....you managed to not know when your prom was? Considering the amount of "ohmyGodIgotmydressyesterdayit'ssocool!" and "lookIgotmynailsdonearen'ttheypretty??!!" and "howareyougettingyourhairdone?!" I had to hear for, like, the 2 months before the event, I'm awed...and a bit jealous...that you escaped the hype. :)

well, i couldn't rightly call my prom dress "pretty".

heh.

i just keep saying to myself "it was the 80's". yeah.

m ps: whatever you did, it was probably better.

yes, but you *hardly* fall into most societal norms. :)
Melinda J. Beasi · 21 years, 11 months ago
Because I don't think any of you truly understand the horror of Prom (and really all things) in the 80's... I give you this.

John Hughes was not making things up. Be afraid, my friends. Be very afraid.
