Available Torrents

   Discussion: Available Torrents

ETree has a nice little search function which makes it a little easier to see what's out there: http://bt.etree.org/?search=moxy&cat=0

Are we adopting etree as the primarytracker for Fruvous shows then? If that's the case, Josh sould probably put that in his torrent info notice that's currently on the front page.

Maybe we also need to put links to a torrent faq. It seemed in the poll that a lot of people were unfamiliar with torrents, shns, and flacs.

I dunno... personally I would say we should either use ETree or establish our own. I have a php/mysql based tracker running at acousticville.org that we could use or install elsewhere. Part of why I liked using ETree is that they get a lot of random music fan traffic, so the shows may get some attention from people who would never find them otherwise... which is the same reason I post the info on SharingTheGroove as well.

What do you (all) think? I'm happy to install the tracker somewhere else under another domain, or pass it along to Josh. It's basically the same as ETree's tracker.

Well, from now on, I'm posting all my new shows I rip at Folktorrent.org.

Main reasons:

A) it won't hog forum space and anger people who aren't interested in hearing fruvous shows.

B) I don't have to convert the text file to html before posting it. hehe.

But, I will just post a link to them here.... unless people don't want me to.

Of course, acousticville.org seems to be private, unless I'm missing something. :)

So having downloaded 11-27-99 I've left the window open and am seeding it. According to the etree search thingie there are a couple of people downloading it, but my upload rate is 0. Why am I not serving anything? In this case I guess it could be because there are a total of 15 seeds for 2 leeches. But in the previous instance I was one of only 3 seeds for 3 leeches and I STILL had a U/L rate of 0. What is the deal with that?
Agent Scully Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
all my other transfers were great.

since yesterday, it's been really slow. :(

One seems to be moving with 4 peers and 2 seeds but the other one that is slow is 2 peers and 4 seeds (6-5-98) I'm not sure why that one is being a problem. :\
Jason Reiser Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
At least at first glance, 6/5/98 doesn't look like that bad... butwith 85% of 14 peers (leechers) firewalled and the 5 seeds only uploading at about 100k/s, it could be kinda slow going. There are only two peers that look to be having real performance problems... maybe you've got several torrents open and you're uploading a lot which will slow down the overall performance of your broadband line, particularly cable and ADSL? Love for people to keep several torrents open, but unless you can tune the bandwidth of them each with either ABC or TorrentStorm, they can get a little out of hand.

My light on it is also yellow right now.

I'm also on DSL (verizon) which could be a problem now too.
Jason Reiser Back · 20 years, 6 months ago

Sounds like you're firewalled. Your IP is showing on the tracker as something with the port number in parentheses, right? In most cases, you can't seed (reliably) without opening the appropriate ports on your firewall. This should also speed your future downloads as the tracker won't allocate your as much download bandwidth if you're not uploading. That's the theory anyway...

I thought I opened the ports that Nate mentioned, but I'm not sure. I'll look again. I'm using Zone Alarm Pro which is a bit cryptic in that department. It has a thing to allow TCP ports and another thing to allow UDP ports. I'm assuming I want TCP. Is that right?
A.J. Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
Replying to myself, ok I fixed it. I had not opened the ports for upload, only download, but that may not have even been the issue. They may have been open anyway, as bittorrent was authorized to be a server. The big problem, was that I was also running the WinXP firewall, and didn't know it. Anyway, I fixed all that stuff and rebooted and now I no longer show up behind a firewall, and I'm getting over 100 KB per sec now! Wohoo
roB! "Rob" Johnson Back · 20 years, 6 months ago

Yes, you want to open ports for TCP.

I just tried to do my first d/l via bargainville.org, but during the initial file creation process I'm getting error messages that I can't fully read, to the gist of "Error 2,No such file or directory, C:/documents and settings ... "

(when I try to read the rest of the error message by widening the popup screen, the error message text disappears.)

This happens with both the 8/10/99 show and the 2/19/00 show.

Ilooked overthe FAQ and relevant threads here (fhdc), but I haven't found out what's wrong. It would seemsomething is missing or unavailable on my hard drive. I didopen the relevant ports to get around firewalls. Do I have to d/l a separate BitTorrent program from the one I'm using on etree.com to get at the bargainville.org shows? And/or might the problem be thatI still have some windows open on etree? I'm finishing up 2 downloads on etree, and I'd like to leave some seeding windows open for a couple of days.

Agent Scully Back · 20 years, 5 months ago
Lori I'm getting the same error message.
Jason Reiser Back · 20 years, 5 months ago

You mean the .torrent file itself doesn't download properly? What browser are you using? I have an idea what might be wrong (on my end)...

Jason Reiser Back · 20 years, 5 months ago

Think I fixed it... there was a problem in download.php that may cause some browsers to choke on the download attempt. I could only duplicate the issue if I pasted the .torrent URL in the browser, but it was certainly a bug on the server side.

Yell if that doesn't do the trick...

stealthlori Back · 20 years, 5 months ago

'k, Jason, sorry to keep bugging you about this but there's a question about the firewalls that came up on the Torrents; help please! forum. (See "Weird" thread.)

I've had no problem downloading from bargainville.org since you tweaked it last night. I completed both Fruvous sets this morning. But I'm always listed as firewalled, with virtually no uploading. So my share rate stinks. I haveports 6880-6999 forwarded on Linksys, with TCP checked. I have rebooted and retried seeding. I'm still firewalled. At this point I've shut down those2 seeding attempts, because all they're doing is slowing down my other d/l's and uploads.

I want to grab the Pete and Arlo show, but I'd like to get unfirewalled first so I can share as well as take.

stealthlori Back · 20 years, 5 months ago
Right, the .torrent file WAS failing after it opened a few kb (a range of @8 to 16, on various attempts) and I got the error message. I'm using IE 6.0.2800.

But it JUST connected on my last try seconds ago, as I was trying to write this ms. -- so it looks like you just fixed it. Thanks! :)
