I'm new here but definitely not to nailbiting!

Hello All! Don't know whether or not I added my intro but here goes. I've been a nailbiter for as long as I can remember. I have had people comment on my nails (or lack thereof) before but I always knew that their comments wouldn't stop me. I tried the fake nails thing ONCE and they only lasted a day and a half because I bit them off too! I've done a lot of nailbiting related surfing online and I tend to agree with the thoughts that it has to do with stress, nerves and just doing something with the hands and about the best advice that I have ever seen is just to stop! I take the little drain stoppers out of the sink when I use it. I know I'm supposed to leave them there to catch the large pieces of food, but the way I see it, if Kohler had not intended for a piece of food to go down the pipes, they wouldn't have made the drain slots so big.

Gah! My roommates do that and it annoys me to no end. They're probably clogging our newly installed drain. :@

I have determined that my nailbiting is part obsessive grooming and part nervous habit. To solve the grooming bit, I'd carry a small pocket knife with nail file and scissors feature. Whenever I get a small break, I file it instead of chewing on it. Even when my nails were mostly chewed, I'd still try to reinforce nail filing. As for the nervous habit thing, I'd actually try to wean myself off of my nails by either peeling off nail polish or by focusing on the skin that's supposed to be cuticles - I'd actually bite at that.

One other thing that helped me is wearing gloves nearly everywhere - it helped me become more aware of what I do with my hands and where my hands actually touch other surfaces - keep this in mind during cold and flu season.

Now that my nails are almost long enough to use polish, I give my cuticles a massage if I want to do something with my hands - with or without sample sizes of hand cream.

welcome to the club!

I've been biting my nails... severely.... since I was about 11. My mom tried everything to get me to stop... including incentives (I got a nintendo for stopping for 6 months... then went right back to doing it) and painting foul-tasting stuff on my nails every morning (I just got used to the taste).

I imagine I'll stop someday.... but... certainly not while unemployed.

Heh.
