Bands Reunited

   Discussion: Bands Reunited
Will work for anime · 20 years, 4 months ago

So, after watching that really cool show on VH1 where they tried to get bands from the 80's back together for a one-time-only show (Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Kajagoogoo and Squeeze were my fav -even tho Squeeze never reunited in the end :-( ) the question was asked what 80's bands would you like to see reuntied for the next season?

aside from the obvious choice of canadian long haired wonder band Tall New Buildinds of course ;-)

Bruce Rose · 20 years, 4 months ago
There's too many!

Dexy's Midnight Runners
ABC
The Fun Boy Three
The Stray Cats
Haircut One Hundred
Katrina And The Waves
Culture Club
Scritti Politti
The Polecats (I love these guys)
The Monroes
Bananarama
The Fixx
The Motels
The English Beat
A Flock Of Seagulls
Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark
Madness
Genesis

They did do A Flock of Seagulls. :)
Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 4 months ago

And I missed it? Curse this "no cable" thing!

They were so much more than a haircut.

Joe Navratil Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
I'm sorry, I'm going to have to take exception to the last item in your list.

Genesis ceased to exist in (May of) 1975, thereby making them ineligible for a show about reuniting 80s bands :-P
Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 4 months ago

Invisible Touch was an 80's album, but I can see where a purist would make the argument.

Maybe I should have said Mike + The Mechanics. :-)

Joe Navratil Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
Invisible Touch was an 80's album

Yes, yes it was. But by then most of the creative talent in the band had been busy with Peter Gabriel [1], Peter Gabriel [2], Peter Gabriel [3], and had just released "So".

(Okay, to be honest, I like Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford's a pretty decent bass player. And Phil can really play, when he tries. He's just not an inspired frontman.)

Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
Given my other forum about Phil Collins, i didn't have any place being his defender.
Will work for anime Back · 20 years, 4 months ago

i heard that ABC, Culture Cluband Katrina And The Waves had already gotten back together......

Madness and The English Beat would be great.

Also The Specials, the original Adam And The Ants, Transvision Vamp, Tommy Two Tone (even if they were just a one hit wonder), Split Enz, and Crowded House.

Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 4 months ago

Tommy Tutone was a two-hit wonder... how could you forget "Angel Say No"?

Transvision Vamp would be really cool. I haven't heard anything but Pop Art, but it would be fun to see. But my favorite song from the disc is "Tell That Girl To Shut Up," which is a cover of a Holly & The Italians song.

angelmusicmaven Back · 20 years, 4 months ago

The last album I remember by Transvision Vamp, I believe it was in the very early 90s, Little Magnets Vs. the Bubble of Babble (or something like that)... they had a college hit withthe lead track called "IJust Wanna Be With You." Fun song.

I need to wish for a band from the 90s to reunite. JELLYFISH.

And TOTALLY agree with Crowded House. Although Neil Finn continues to rule solo... matter of fact I heard Neil and Timare doing another albumtogether! Huzzah!

Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 4 months ago

I remember Jellyfish, but now that I'm trying to place them, I keep coming up with the Wonder Stuff. weird.

Remember Ned's Atomic Dustbin and Teenage Fanclub? I think TF received a distinction from Rolling Stone... something about Bandwagonesque being "an album ahead of its time" and "the direction music is going." The quotes might not be accurate, but that was the sentiment... and it doesn't really matter, because they were wrong. But really, who could have predicted Nevermind?

angelmusicmaven Back · 20 years, 4 months ago

ooh, I liked the Wonder Stuff too... not nearly as much as Jellyfish, but WS is (I think they still tour) very fun!

Yeah, loved those college rock bands... matter of fact, I have some TF records and just picked up one from 2002 that is going in the cd player right now!

dave "buh" · 20 years, 4 months ago
cuz I just can't get into Aimee Mann's solo work. It's like she forgot how to put together a good song. I guess the band or producers were the ones with the pop song sensibility and its probably why she wanted to be a solo artist.
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 20 years, 4 months ago
Some bands I want back together again are Rennaisance, The Roches, October Project, Valentine Smith (they opened for Fruvous once), and Whirligig.
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
whirligig broke up?

and i would love to see all three roches together again.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
It might just be a hiatus. They weren't really clear about it. Lisa Gutkin is busy with the Klezmatics now and Lisa Moscatello is doing her solo stuff. They should play together and call themselve Lisa Lisa.
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
and as a side project, they could make preserves and call them "cult jam." :P

Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
A friend of mine is HUGE into October Project. When he first played their music for me, I told him the singer, Mary Fahl, reminded me of Jon Anderson of Yes. He got a good laugh out of it. Apparently, so did she, once the shock wore off.
Laura P. Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
October Project is still together isn't it? (Or back together), just without Mary Fahl. Though I would conceed the point that it just ain't the same without her.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
Yes, they were November Project for a while, no joke. But as you say with Mary it isn't the same band.
Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
Were? Does that mean that NP is gone?
trunger is counting... · 20 years, 4 months ago
guns n' roses reunited.... heh, heh, heh
Deacon Nailbat · 20 years, 4 months ago
The Talking heads are about the only band I really *miss* from the 80's.

Incidentally, I know he was never totally *Normal* but when did he totally go off the deep end? I saw him perform live a couple years ago, and he's totally lost his mind. Still a good musician, though.

Guns and Roses had a good run, too, but what in the heck is going on now? Buckethead? please.....
Joe Navratil · 20 years, 4 months ago
...The Police. If only so we could see the surprised look on his face when Stewart Copeland finally rips Sting's head off and his body turns to a pile of dust.
Deacon Nailbat · 20 years, 4 months ago
Ooh - It would be nice for Blondie to make a comeback. Supertramp could still have something to offer too.
Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
I think Blondie has a new album coming out soon (meaning by summer 2004).
Deacon Nailbat Back · 20 years, 4 months ago

word

Life just got that much better here :)

Gordondon son of Ethelred · 20 years, 4 months ago
I'm listening to Fairport Convention now. Technically they still exist but the two most talented people are gone, Richard Thompson has his solo career and Sandy Denny died. If we could resurrect people to play in the band Fairport would be near the top of my list.

So what other bands would you like to see back together with their resurrected members. The Beatles, Who, and Led Zeppelin are some obvious choices.
Magical Bob · 20 years, 4 months ago
The question that arises when one talks about bands reuniting is should the band reunite? For many bands, it has been too long since their heyday to make any sort of a comeback and for others it would just look sad to see 60 year old couples trying to connect to a new audience of fourteen year olds. Some bands could and should definitely reunite though, such as Led Zeppelin.

I agree that sometimes the people you see on thoseoldies shows (like the ones I've seen on PBS) shouldn't bother but some are surprisingly good. But I assume you are refering to getting together to pick-up where they left off in the creative sense, and there I agree, time has moved on, music has moved on. For most.
Deacon Nailbat Back · 20 years, 4 months ago

Hrm...not sure about Zeppelin. I think they had a few more albums in them for sure, with one unfortunate exceptionbeing John Bonham, but by and large, old bands that reunite never quite get it together again. I like what Page and Plant have been doing recently, by doing their own thing, but still performing together here and there (I don't know specifics on how much but, the point is, some)

Bands that reuinite are haunted by the "play your old stuff, we don't care about your new stuff" syndrome. It's hard enough to keep a fan base interested in your new work, but when you take 5 years off and reunite, it's that much harder.

I think it's good when bands know when to say when. In the case of Zeppelin, I think they had it taken away from them before it was over, but better that than have them end up like Skynard or Metallica.

Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
Bands that never broke up have that problem. Look at Cheap Trick.
Deacon Nailbat Back · 20 years, 4 months ago

I thought they just fell off the Earth. I never even gave a thought that they *might* still exist.

Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
Not only do they still exist, they're touring with Aerosmith this spring. Sounds like a good, but pricey, show.
Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 4 months ago

I'll take this back to Blondie. Their official return from the dead (the album No Exit) was not good. They were trying to resurrect AutoAmerican by challenging the musical norms [at the time (1981,) the norm was New Wave heading into synth pop.] Their challenge was to include touches of Neo-swing with the "norm." Unfortunately, the norm moved on... and the album was released about two years after the Cherry Poppin' Daddies burned us out on the sound.

I am looking forward to hearing the newest Blondie album. I just hope they go back to Parallel Lines for inspiration.

Gordondon son of Ethelred · 20 years, 4 months ago
I want DVN to reunite and they haven't even disbanded yet.
Kris 'engaged' Bedient Back · 20 years, 4 months ago
Does that mean you want them to break up, just so they can reunite?
