I thought it was the best book but the worst film. Plot exposition and character development were dropped in favor of special effects sequences.
Bender Back · 20 years, 1 month ago

but the use of the word "worst" implies that more than one of the films are bad. I think a better wordmight be "weakest".

*shrugs*

that's just a linguisticannoyance of mine.

(Just for the record, I enjoyed the third film very much.)

luckily i read the book before seeing this move...great special effects, but it felt extremely rushed to me...i had less of a character sense than in the other two. but damnit, being the harry potter junkie i am, i will be seeing the next one.
dgodwin Back · 20 years, 1 month ago
I agree that the movie seemed rushed and a lot was dropped that I would've liked to see in it. I still put it second, as COS in both book and movie form didn't do much for me. Azkaban was my favorite book though...

Well, the next one has another new director, I think, so not liking this one shouldn't keep you from seeing the next one. :)

Azkaban was always my favourite book. Yes the film was lacking in character development, however, as a book reader, I was very satisfied with the movie as a whole. (Except for the whole explaining of the Marauder's Map... and the Stag Patronus... grah. That's frustrating.)

However, I hear that if you've never read the books, the movie can be VERY confusing. Anyone agree?

Is there anyone here that hasn't read the books? :-)
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 1 month ago
I read them when I was in the hospital back in 2001. A nurse's aid saw them on my table and asked "What's that?" she had never heard of Harry Potter. I didn't think that was possible in this country.

well, until a year or two ago, I hadn't heard of harry potter either. :)

So that's quite believable for 2001.

there were a lot of things that still put it far beyond the other two - the sets, the scenery, the ACTING...

but my main complaint was the timing. I thought the shrieking shack scene was still way too fast, and more explanation was required - they didn't talk about the map, the shrieking shack being used for Lupin, the whomping willow being planted so no one would find him there and be attacked, the other three marauders becoming illegal animagi, how Sirius escaped from azkaban when no one ever had, the whole business with the Potters' secret keeper switching and other things that just seemed... integral to the plot in the book.

I also thought the scene in the book where Sirius gets into the tower with the stolen passwords was kind of an odd omission, too - there was very little setup to indicate that maybe it wasn't Harry he was after. (also, the sneakoscope that was in the book would have been cool - the hints about someone untrustworthy always being around...)

and some of the changes seemed unnecessary - the idea that Lupin could stop the whomping willow with a very simple spell seems counterintuitive. it should have been hard to get in.

oh, and one last thing. the werewolf. looked. fscking. stupid.

oh, and one last thing. the werewolf. looked. fscking. stupid.

Yes, but.... come on, the absolutely amazing and breathtaking hippogriff totally makes up for that.

It had the behavior and attitude of a moody-yet-snuggly bird. I know about those, because I've had one for nearly twelve years. It was perfect.

lawrence Back · 20 years, 1 month ago
true enough. in fact, I have to say that if I didn't know for a fact that there was no such thing as a Hippogriff, I'd have assumed Buckbeak was played by a real one.
Bender Back · 20 years, 1 month ago
but how can you be so sure? ;)
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 1 month ago
Come on, all during the film I could tell the sequences where they used a real hippogriff and those that used the artificial one.
100% dainty! Back · 20 years, 1 month ago
They actually used two hippogriffs. The hippogriff contract says that she can't work more than 5 hours a day, so they had to use twins. You can tell the difference if you look closely for the mole that one of them has below her left wing. Duh.

That one just went into the hospital for an eating disorder.
Bender Back · 20 years, 1 month ago
that's really not something to joke about, regardless of what popular "humor" dictates.

why don't you make jokes about *my* time in the hospital? come on. just a few cheap shots about lithium and wrist-slitting? or some even cheaper ones at the expense of that wonderful, gentle girl I knew from camp, possibly the most beautiful soul I ever met, whose incredibly untimely death truly made me feel like a part of me died? that would be the funniest thing ever.

eating disorders are a manifestation of depression. just because they were only really widely recognized in recent years and are dismissed by some as being en vogue doesn't make the problem any less valid or painful.

I'm very hurt and disappointed.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 1 month ago
I'm sorry if I offended anyone. I wasn't making fun of the disorder just inserting the latest piece of Olsen Twins news to fill in the parellel.
Bender Back · 20 years, 1 month ago
