New music and a racist auntie

Discussion: New music and a racist auntie

I dunno. I'm of mixed minds on this topic.

I mean, first of all, I'd be remiss in my fuzzy-headed-liberalness if I didn't hold forth about how horrible it is that your auntie is so racist, and how I can't believe that she'd say such a thing.

But on the other hand, I have caught myself thinking things very similar to that. Not just out of the blue, mind. But jackass kids at the movie theater with their friends are jackass kids at the movie theater with their friends, and damned if I haven't wondered if I shouldn't go to another theater because the people there look a little more like I do.

And this distresses me, because I really do believe that skin color should be irrelevant. And I really do believe what's important is the content of a man's character, not his ethnicity. But it's really pounded home the idea that whenever you're pointing at someone else, you've got three fingers pointed at yourself.

I know what you mean, and I think most people get that from time to time. The thing about this situation was that she let it go as if nothing was wrong with it, and it wasn't sparked by anything in particular. Usually when people think a racist thought, it's when someone does something rude and happens to be of a different color. This was just because she saw some black people walking around. That's what really caught me off guard.

I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised, though. I do live in Cincinnati. We're not really known for our positive race relations...
