Help me solve my mystery

On Tuesday, I received a letter in the mail.

Envelope:
standard white #10 envelope, no return address, my name and address typed (on a type writer - the "k" was double-struck), cancelled in Santa Ana California, regular "flag" $.37 stamp.

Contents:
1 page ripped from a newspaper. Publication geared toward seniors. "Special Advertising Section" - articles about various issues, including tobacco and cost of prescription drugs. One article about purchasing cigarettes at lower prices through an Indian tribe. Offer of a free Zippo lighter.

1 post-it note stuck to that specific article. Handwritten note says "Hey, Melissa! Free Zippo!"

I can't think of anyone I know personally that would send this. There's nothing I can find on the web about similar pieces of mail. I suspect it's an advertising ploy, but you think they'd be sending to people who've expressed interest in this sort of thing in the past.

Any thoughts?

it's an advertising ploy. there are a lot of companies who use that post-it technique. i'm pretty sure i've read some articles about it, too, but i can't remember where. sorry to be such a fount of nothing. :/

On a typewriter! Wow.

I'm sure it's fairly easy to fake that. I've been impressed by the quality of "hand-written" notes lately, as well. Yay technology. Pretty soon we'll need a turing test to determine spam from real mail.

a turing test on spam would probably be as fascinating as it is on a twinkie :P

I knew you'd forget. That was the secret signal to us that the invasion is about to begin and that you were supposed to carry out your part of the plan. Now that you've blabbed about it on the internet we'll have to cancel the invasion.
