I used to think that as a kid, and I still think maybe it would be better, but, I don't know. It may be that our various cultures are still too diverse for people to be completely happy under one world government. Lets see how the EU turns out in another 20 years.

The only way I can see a good entire-Earth government is if we either discover and mingle with alien life, or if humans spread to the stars, and the entire scale of our lives expands.

There's just too much potential for bad otherwise.
Not to mention the entire logistical issue.

I just find myself feeling claustrophobic about the issue. What happens when you disagree? Even if decent is allowed, if there is only one government, where do you go when your [whatever] is not in favor/is being oppressed.

We already have this problem. see: George W. Bush, World Dictator.

I do recall that Bush said that he would be ok with dictatorship in America, as long as he was the dictator..

however, now he feels the need to go and screw with every other country.. we wouldn't need to focus so much on gathering allies if we didn't have so many enemies.

source for that quote?

for kicks, google it: bush dictator quote

December 18, 2000. Many of the sites are obviously non-Republican sites, but it was quoted from the Associated Press. It was also broadcast on TV news quite a few times. CNN, etc.

He's actually said that three times.

The one you are talking about is (full quote):
"I told all four [congressional leaders] that I felt like this election happened for a reason; that it pointed out-- the Delay in the outcome should make it clear to all of us-- that we can come together to heal whatever wounds may exist, whatever residuals there may be. And I really look forward to the opportunity. I hope they've got my sense of optimism about the possible, and enthusiasm about the job. I told all four that there are going to be some times where we don't agree with each other, but that's okay. If this were a dictatorship, it would be a heck of a lot easier... [Bush chuckles, audience laughs] ...just so long as I'm the dictator [more laughter]."

"You don't get everything you want. A dictatorship would be a lot easier."

* Responding to the difficulties of governing Texas ("The Taming of Texas," Governing Magazine, July 1998 (link)

"Dealing with Congress is a matter of give and take. The president doesn't get everything he wants, the Congress doesn't get everything they want. But we're finding good common ground. A dictatorship would be a heck of a lot easier, there's no question about it."

It wasn't that I doubted her (I mean, look at who we're talking about), but I'm a stickler for accuracy.
Starfox Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
Understood, and I share the desire for accuracy, hence the reason I posted the full dirty picture.

All Hail the DICK-TATOR.

...then it'd be ok.

No. Just... no. On so many levels no. World gov't = teh BAAAAD!
Starfox · 19 years, 3 months ago
HELL no. Yes, it would be nice in some utopian society, but in the real world it would never work.
A girl named Becca · 19 years, 3 months ago
Heck, the U.S. is already too big for one government. The entire WORLD?! No. Nonono.
caroline: tired. Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
I agree. that's way too large scale gov't for any kind of small scale changes. there's no way everyone will be represented in a gov't that huge, and with a world this diverse.

It may sound wishy-washy, but if the UN had much more power while each country did whatever it wanted, word peace could be achieved without uniting everyone under one large country. It would kinda be like the Articles of Confederation during the early US times (and we all know how great that idea went). Seriously though, if the UN could somehow be able to direct funds to needy countries and prevent wars through some universal agreement to stop aggression (unless threatens entire world not to), it might work. Just some hopeful drivel for you all.

A.J. Back · 19 years, 3 months ago

We're all too messed up in the head, so no matter who rules, others will suffer. In a way, government, life in the work place and social status are all just an extension of who we were in high school. We take those issues with us through our subconscious, and it lurks just behind us like our shadows.

The ideal society is one where everyone is respected for their own talents, and that gives them a place in the community. Pretty much exactly what the natives to this continent were doing before we showed up with our laws and money and hunger for power. Once again, greed beats out common sense. If the whole world had one government, it would be the same place, except it would be civil wars instead of wars with other countries. If we want massive change we need a better alternative than giving certain people more power than it is humanly possible to handle.
