What is your oldest memory

Discussion: What is your oldest memory
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 18 years, 10 months ago
What is your oldest memory and how old were you at the time?
Jºnªthªn · 18 years, 10 months ago
Seeing Bobby Kennedy speak at Fairfax High in 1968, shortly before he was killed. I was a little less than two at the time.

I also remember riding a miniature train in Griffith Park around the same time.
sheryls · 18 years, 10 months ago
i have two memories from before living in Toledo - until just after my 5th birthday i lived in Kalamazoo, MI. my only memories from there were:

sitting in my basement watching a video on reproduction and wondering what "sperm" meant

and, less fascinating, my mom walking me to pre-school across a VERY snowy yard.

The next thing i can recall, vivid as anything, is the moment i got out of the moving van in our new driveway in Toledo.

I remember a classmate in Preschool eating paste. I would have been about 3 at the time

For a long time, I thought my oldest memory was going to see my brother in the hospital just after he was born (I would have been two).

However, I recently learned that the memory I have of wearing a Tweetybird costume for Halloween, and seeing myself in my aunt's mirror, was from when I was one.

Does anyone else remember how huge the fifth graders looked when you were in kindergarten? Even today when I look back on those memories, the older kids seem to be played by adults.
nate... · 18 years, 10 months ago
the oldest was from when I was 2.5 or 3 or so.... I was going to bed to take a nap, and I was explaining to my mom that I didn't think I had to wear a diaper for nap time either anymore.

I spent a summer in Kalamzoo, that was 1973. Kalamazoo is one of my two favorite American city names, the other is Wala Wala Washington.
nate... Back · 18 years, 10 months ago
my favorite city name of all time is guelph.

sheryls Back · 18 years, 10 months ago

You like Kalamazoo better than Hell, Michigan? :D

or how about WAPAKONETA!!!!

sheryls Back · 18 years, 10 months ago

totally! my sisters were in 5th and 6th grade when i was i kindergarden, and to me they havent changed since, despite the fact that they're 31 and 32 now :D

Poor Annie hasnt really changed in hight since 7th grade, so really i'm not that far off...

nate... Back · 18 years, 10 months ago
Yup, same here. :)

When I think of my sisters in memories of elementary school or whatever, it's them now in the memory.

They've never changed.

Mamalissa! · 18 years, 10 months ago
I can definitively date a memory of one of my sister's birthday parties to when I was 4, but I have a lot of other memories that are probably older than that. One favorite is dressing up as a tree for Halloween. I colored on a brown paper grocery bag with orange and red crayons, and my mom cut out head and arm holes.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 10 months ago
Wasn't that last year? Didn't we go trick or treating together?
Agent Scully Back · 18 years, 10 months ago
I was around a year old.

I remember being in my buggy (a huge one - not a small stroller) drinking orange pop.

As I was told, that was a festival during the summer of 1972 that my parents attended in Franklinville, NY.

Also this picture from 1973 or 1974 I remember someone taking of me:

I remember trying on my mom's glasses, sitting on my high chair thinking, "Damn! These things are strong!"

Is this done by a bot? If it is done by a person I can't believe it would be cost effective. I can't really see how a bot could do that though.

well, it sucks, either way.

I remember painting my little brother's room before he was born.

Mom gave me a cup of yellow paint and a little water color brush and my job was to paint the corner. I painted that corner so well and so carefully... I was heartbroken when , maybe 10 years later, they repainted.

My brother was born august 1984, so I guess I had to have been two or three

i remember bits and blurbs from my time in YMCA day care (playing in the table sand box, swimming, etc...) but i remember on my 3rd birthday my mom made a cake for everyone at day care (before stupid health regulations came into effect) and one of the girls scooped up a heap of frosting on her finger before my mom could set the cake down on the table. don't know why this memory sticks with me...

We have a big pool, and I was driving a little pedal powered red buggy next to it. I accidentaly turned toward the pool instead of away from it, and fell in. I didn't know how to swim, and (even worse) it was the deep end. Which is nine feet. Dum Dum DOOOOO! Luckily, I slowly paddled over to the edge, and my sister and brother helped me get out. *Whew*

Jeff didn't help - he was 4! You're twins, remember? You always seem to forget that I could've left you there. ;)
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 18 years, 10 months ago
My earliest memory is taking the Staten Island Ferry, I was about 3. I have two distinct snippets. The first was driving the car on it. The other is being disappointed when we got on that they only had vanilla ice cream. I don't remember seeing the skyline or the Statue of Liberty, I remember ice cream.
renita · 18 years, 10 months ago
all of them are from between about 2 and 3 beyond that i don't know the order.

going to ben's market with my sister to buy candy with our 50cent allowence.

being allowed to help make a tent with the BIG kids and hitting my thumb with a hammer. i said "I have a thumb ache." all the kids laughed and i ran home crying more because of the laughing than the hurt thumb.

standing on the kitchen counter in my pajamas with feet. i had climbed up there in the morning and got stuck and was waiting for my parents to wake up to help me back down.

being wrapped up in a sleeping bag with my sister in the back part of the cab of my dad's eighteen wheeler. we were eating rolo's

the day i ate a bunch of children's tylenol (before child proof caps) and was rushed to the hospital to have my stomach pumped. it's weird. i remember the room with the grocery bags in it. mom hadn't unpacked them yet, and i remember the open, almost empty bottle on the floor. but i don't remember the neighbor (a nurse) trying to induce vomiting, or the hospital. those are the bits that i heard afterward.

it's funny, i actually remember the moment when i heard that story and put it together with the memory of the room.

I remember my "footsy" pajamas. There is a pic taken from when I was two or three of me in them and I think I remember it being taken. I was confused because I was wearing them outside not when I was going to bed. That might be me remembering the picture, not the actual event.
