How did you feel about school?
nate... Back · 18 years, 9 months ago
Heh, beat me to it. :)

caroline: tired. Back · 18 years, 9 months ago
yeah, i could've sworn this was going to be by nate. :)
caroline: tired. · 18 years, 9 months ago
I don't really. I like...learning, I guess, but stuff that I'm not interested in (which is definitely a great big portion of what I have to work on) just leaves me cold. Right now, I almost miss it, but ask me in about a month and I'll have a totally different answer for you. :)

Every so often, there's a project/assignment/lesson/whatever that I'm really interested in, and I work really hard on it and enjoy doing it. Stuff like math, though...math and I are not friendly. I do pretty well in math, but that's because I just sorta...do well in school, even if I don't try very hard. *shrug*
A lot of stuff, though, like homework assignments, are just pointless, and I end up not doing them. Not big stuff, just like...spelling? French? Things I don't like at all, really, or things that I don't think are worth my time.

However... I think I'm going to have to actually try this year. Ever since I was really little, teachers and parents and relatives have always told me how well I was going to do, and how much of a success I was going to be, and there's sort of a pressure to do well. I want it for myself as well, but before now I haven't really worked for it, and I'll probably have to start now. 9th grade is what can make or break a student's career. Or so I have read.

So, that's my two cents. I'll probably have more to add to this later, because, well, I'm almost in school- three more days of summer. *sigh*

I actually like school.. always have. especially since I got to Las Vegas.. our school system sucked for the most part, but I got one of the highest rated highschools in the state..

and College has rocked thus far.. I'm definitely going on to grad school.
Annika · 18 years, 9 months ago
I hated school. I argued with the Principal and assistant principal every day for weeks before they agreed to let me try and graduate early.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 9 months ago
The Assistant Principal in my intermediate school had it in for me. In 6th grade I was sitting in assembly. My friend was talking to me while the AP was talking. I saw the AP's eyes moving in our direction and told my friend to be quiet. The AP saw my lips moving and blew his stack. He told me to go to his office and wait for him.

When he finished talking to the assembly he came to talk to me. He let out a tirade calling me a "dirty dog" and a "mutt," and saying; "Your mother should have given you a good beating 10 years ago." The worst part is that he spit when he talked so I got covered with his saliva.

When he was done with his tirade he told me to wait there and he left. When the bell rang for the next class I left because I really did like school and didn't want to miss it.

When I got home I told my mother what happened and she called the principal. The next day he gave me a apology and said that "anyone could have a bad day." I never really thought that was adequate and that the AP should have apologized himself.

After that each year the AP would pull me out of assembly one time for one infraction of another. He never vented at me like that first time again.

ooh, teacher horror stories :D

I have a slight hearing problem. in a big room or a din, i have trouble making out words clearly. i also have trouble with song lyrics.

I didnt take many big auditorium classes in college. I finally took one my junior year from a guy who everyone loved. he was funny, but really strict. i sat next to Smatts.

I always took really dilligent notes. everything he said or put on the overhead i wrote down. i enjoyed the class. however, at times, i had to ask smatts what he just said because i had trouble hearing him. sometimes what he just said was funny, so we would laugh.

One day in the middle of the semester, he stopped mid sentance, and in the middle of a 300 person lecture, he started screaming. i didnt even know who he was screaming at, and then i realized he was screaming at me. well, us.

he said, "AND YOU TWO. YOU TWO I HAVE HAD JUST ABOUT ENOUGH OF. YOU'RE ALWAYS SITTING THERE F%$#ING GOOSING EACH OTHER AND SCREWING AROUND. IF YOU DONT WANT TO BE HERE THEN LEAVE! I WAS EVEN CONSIDERING PUTTING A VIDEO CAMERA ON YOU TWO AND THEN SHOWING THE WHOLE CLASS! I DONT NEED PEOPLE LIKE YOU IN HERE, PEOPLE ARE HERE TO LEARN AND NOT PLAY KISSYFACE!"

i was *dead stunned*. i had no idea this guy had it in for me/us so badly. I had to hold tears back the entire rest of the lecture. That night, i emailed him and explained the hearing thing, the part where i thought he was funny so sometimes i laugh a few beats after what he said because i had to ask, and if he wanted to see my 3 notebooks full of notes from his class after only half a semester, he was welcome to peruse the extent of my attentiveness. He was pretty shocked i apologized, and was really nice to me the rest of the semester :P

*Hugs*

That is awful. The most effective way to stop a student from talking is to just stop lecturing and stare at the person. The whole class will join you and that makes the student feel totally self conscious when they realize what happenned.

Ahhh good times good times :). I went from graduation back to working at a college.

sheryls Back · 18 years, 9 months ago

*throws poop at you*

Matthew Scott Slawinski Back · 18 years, 9 months ago

AYE! I'm not goosing! Merely telling you the answer that you didn't hear Helen ;). Dr. Poor was his name! Although his last name is ironic ... the guy said he never got the oil changed in his cars because he didn't keep them more than two years.

sheryls Back · 18 years, 9 months ago

i remember that :D he was anything but poor. dude was loaded!

he's also co-authored a book, was named master teacher, and started his own business designing freaky life-like robots.

he is clearly...an alien :P

sheryls Back · 18 years, 9 months ago
also, this is hilarious.

I liked school when I was there. Never liked doing the work, but reading and participating in class was fun. I also liked all the extracurricular activities - in college I had the chance to belong to tons of music groups and had access to many fun people for hanging out.

But strangely enough, I love being out of school and not having constant pressure to do work. I like leaving work at 4:30 and having the rest of the night or weekend to myself to do whatever I want.
Kris 'engaged' Bedient Back · 18 years, 9 months ago
you mean, there's life without homework?
Nik Chaikin Back · 18 years, 9 months ago
Is there life with it?
nate... Back · 18 years, 9 months ago
You mean, people do homework?
:D
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 9 months ago
When I was a student I was terrible about doing homework. Now that I'm a teacher I fight a constant struggle to get my students to do theirs. The difference is that I could learn the material without doing the work, they can't.
Ben · 18 years, 9 months ago
Well, I like my friends, and (some) of the subjects, but a lot of people seem to have a grudge against me (b/c i'm so rowdy! jk., jk...)For example, I had finished eating lunch, and since it was indoor recess (i'm still in gradey-school) and I went back to the classroom (which was, like, two steps away). So, I sit down and start to read, smart boy that i am. The aide comes in with the class, sees me sitting quietly at my desk reading. She beckons me out into the hall, yells a me for a bit, takes me back to the lunchroom, breifly converses with another aide about "what to do with me", and in the end, they make me wash lunch tables! Oh, the audacity of it all!
sheryls Back · 18 years, 9 months ago

how dare you read! that's against school policy.

bad ben. no donut.

Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 9 months ago
You missed the entire point. If Ben is washing the tables then the Aides don't have to. This is about forced labor.
Ben · 18 years, 9 months ago
exactly!
caroline: tired. Back · 18 years, 9 months ago
can i say it? please?

YAY!

He got it fast!

I always liked school as a student (though of course I had bad days and such), but the jury is still out on whether I like it as a teacher. Parts of it are great and I love my kids, but I'm used to school stuff coming easily to me and I'm really struggling with the teaching thing so far. It's frustrating.
