Are we talking SNL back when it was really funny in the 70's, or during the dull early 80's, when SCTV rejects like Tony Rosato where on..
Andrea Krause Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
That's precisely why I wrote the "classic" in there. To put the funny days of SNL against the others. :)

And it's weird...I've had Steve Martin's King Tut song in my head all morning BEFORE signing on and seeing the poll. Heh.
Jºnªthªn Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
Well then SNL it is!

I'm somewhat ashamed to say that I never really got KITH. I mean I think that some of the guys are really funny, like Scott, but most of the time I can't stand it.

And why not list some non-brit/canadian humor, like Carol Burnett?
Andrea Krause Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
Hehehe yeah, very true. I couldn't think of many at the time I did the poll, but there's always the "other"! :)
nate... · 18 years, 8 months ago
what's sctv?

Nevermind, googled.
:)

I had a VERY hard time choosing between kith and python, though.....

very different styles.

Talcott Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
Same here.
In the end, I voted for Python, but KitH was a close second.

I love what I've seen of SCTV, but I haven't seen enough to give it fair consideration.
Andrea Krause Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
I used to watch a lot of it in reruns when I was a kid. (SCTV that is) I really adored Martin Short.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
SCTV was great. Martin Short didn't join the cast till its decline. The first season with Harold Ramis was the best.

I would love to see some episodes of the Goon Show. That was Python's spiritual precursor in England. Peter Sellers was on it.
angelmusicmaven Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
well how bout that one season of SNL with both Marty and Christopher Guest? Sigh. I voted for SCTV but for me it's an honest tie between that, KiTH, and SOME SNL.
Brian Dinsky · 18 years, 8 months ago

I voted for Kids In The Hall, but I feel that Upright Citizens Brigade not only deserves a mention, but comes in a very, VERYclose second.

Wait... did I just see MadTV as one of the choices?!??

*puke*

Edit: Okay, I'm seeing things. MadTV wasn't on the list. Not to say that it should have been, for that matter. Hmm.

Bender Back · 18 years, 8 months ago

If you like the UCB, go see one of their shows in New York sometime. It'll be the best five bucks you've ever spent.

goovie is married! · 18 years, 8 months ago
but kith are a close second.
Rachel Marie aka RAI · 18 years, 8 months ago
All That, of Nickelodeon fame, but only for Lori Beth Denberg's "Vital Information." I've either not seen any others or hate SNL. ;o)
iPauley · 18 years, 8 months ago
Not really "sketch" or "classic," but one of my favorite comedy shows, both in its British incarnation and its American, is "Who's Line Is It Anyway?" Improvisational comedy rules. :)
Bender Back · 18 years, 8 months ago

Ugh ugh ugh.

That's not real improv! That's good improvisers who can't do real improv on TV because it just won't work, but they have schticky games that are instant laugh machines.

If you want real improv, talk to me. I'm an improviser and improv teacher.

nate... Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
Well, whatever.... even if it's not "real improv".. it's still funny.

:)

whose. whose. whose.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
mine, mine, mine.

Who's on first.
Yvonne Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
Good stuff. :)
Bender · 18 years, 8 months ago
Kids In The Hall was at *least* a good decade after the other ones listed. I don't think it really fits.
renita · 18 years, 8 months ago
...but this made me think of "you can't do that on television".

not that i would have voted for it, but because one of the cast members has recently popped up in a commercial.
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 18 years, 8 months ago
This poll made me think of the Rutles. It was pretty much a collaboration of SNL and Python people.
Michael (foof) Maki · 18 years, 8 months ago
I voted SNL, because when it's "on," it's amazing... But I just thought someone should mention Mr. Show. :-)
nate... Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
yeah, mr. show when it was "on" was really good.
*nods*

goovie is married! Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
mr. show definitely had some brilliant moments.
Bender Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
Jeepers Creepers, Slacker Guy! Just walks away without saying goodbye...
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 18 years, 8 months ago
It wasn't only sketches it had great singing and dancing too. My favorite cast member was the new Lisa. She was so much better than the one on the sitcom.
goovie is married! Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
personally, i think the simpsons variety show can't hold a candle to the alan brady show.
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 18 years, 8 months ago
These were from before my time and I've only seen snippets from them but My Show of Shows and the Sid Ceaser show have great reputations. I know the talent was there. The writers included Mel Brooks, Woody Allen, and Neil Simon. How is that for an all-star lineup?
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
I forgot to add Larry Gelbart of M*A*S*H fame.
goovie is married! Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
it's your show of shows, right? carl reiner based a lot of the dick van dyke show on his experiences writing for those shows.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
Of course it is Your show of shows I was just being possessive.

Exactly Carl Reiner was Sid Ceaser's straight man. I should have mentioned him.

One writer on the show was asked, "How come all the writers were young and Jewish." He replied, "because all of our parents were old and Jewish."
goovie is married! Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
carl reiner is my hero.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
His son is pretty good too. Went from being a meathead to directing The Princess Bride. Not a bad resume.
Andrea Krause Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
I kinda love old Smothers Brothers stuff. Like...a lot.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
The Smothers Brothers was one of the greatest shows EVER! I'd put it on my top ten list. It was the first show to make political humor a staple on TV. It was also really funny.
Geoff · 18 years, 8 months ago
THE STATE

That is all.
nate... Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
yeah... the state was actually pretty damned good.

Geoff Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
Centurion: "Are you Jesus of Nazareth?"
Jesus: [Thinks] "No, he went that way. Wearing a short-sleeved shirt, keeps talking about his balls..."
goovie is married! Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
never saw the state, but man, was wet hot american summer one of the funniest movies ever made.
Geoff Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
Oh, you get a big ol' high five for that one. That reminds me, I gotta buy more dick cream. I MEAN STICK TEAM. I HAVE STICK TEAM PRACTICE TOMORROW YES I HAVE T0 GO BYE
Sarah · 18 years, 8 months ago
It was difficult to pick between KiTH and Monty Python...what's The State, and where can I see it?
Andrea Krause · 18 years, 8 months ago

When I look at the poll right now it looks kinda like Monty Python is giving us the finger. :)

nate... Back · 18 years, 8 months ago
Oh yeah?!

Well, I don't GIVE a FLYING CIRCUS!
