   Discussion: Favorite Solo Artist

These are the top eight solo artists in the Favorite Band section of FHDC
Rachel Marie aka RAI Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Out of the eight, I've only seen two (Ani and Dar) and I've only heard the music of one other (Weird Al). I had to vote for Dar because I do like her stuff, even though I like Weird Al's stuff lots, hers is more... musical? I dunno. And Ani's totally not in at all because I think she's overrated and her fans are RABID.

I mean, tom is on a whole other level.... being a demi-god and all... but out of the options that aren't obvious, Peter.

Josh Woodward Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Yeah, I like most of these, but Peter's the one.
Talcott Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
.oO When they look back and weigh everything he's done, they will realize- Peter's the one Oo.

Yes, a mention of Peter Mulvey gave me an early Mono Puff earworm. I might need more coffee this morning.

hahaha that happened to me yesterday but I didn't post it for fear of looking like a dork. :)

Talcott Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
I figure I'm going to look like a dork somehow or another, so I might as well go for it ;-)
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
No you look like a Hobbit, you are a dork. Dorkinocity is a good thing.

Agent Scully Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
I did too! :)

And I think I started listening to him around 1977 on Dr Demento (I vaguely remember his tapes being played when I was really young).

Anyone who can play an accordion while doing side-kicks up past his shoulders has my vote. That's TALENT. ;)

If I wasn't counting that, of course, Peter-man!
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 18 years, 11 months ago
Tom Waits and Dar are the only ones on the list that I really like a lot. The others are people I either like or are indifferent to. My tastes in bands is closer to that of other fruheads than my taste in solo artists. My personal list would be something like

1. Bob Dylan
2. Richard Thompson
3. Richard Thompson
...
99. Richard Thompson
100. Christine Lavin

Including Weird Al = Awesome

i picked dar for sentimental reasons, but it was crazy hard choosing between her and peter.

Peter, although I do like Dar a lot.

Plus, I recently found out that Tom Waits is incredible. And what I've heard of Tory Cassis I've liked.

Weird Al is not only very talented (his originals are way underratead) but also one of the nicest celebs I've ever met (on numerous occasions). I first heard him around 1980, wrote to Dr. Demento because I had to know what he looked like, and Al wrote back himself with a picture which he wrote on the back, "Now how about a picture of YOU!!" Later, I wrote to him asking about a lyric I couldn't make out in his song "Still Billy Joel to Me," and he sent me a copy of the lyrics to the whole song...that he'd written out by hand (I still have it, of course). Then there was the time I was waiting with some friends to see him after a show...we were standing in line with some groupie chicks who were talking about stalking him and finding out where he was staying. When he came out, he signed a few autographs, then saw me and yelled, "KIM!!" and picked me up in a big hug. My friends told me the groupies' jaws hit the ground when he did that What a guy :)
angelmusicmaven Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
Yeah, Al is soooo just straight-up NICE. The band seems nice too, especially Bermuda.
Phoenix · 18 years, 11 months ago
Easy decision...
Talcott · 18 years, 11 months ago
Peter Mulvey, hands down.

Weird Al being a runner-up.
Actually, almost everyone on the list is a close runner up (except for Sarah Slean who I don't know much of, and Ani, who I find boring).

I'm a bit surprised Dan Bern isn't on the list. He always seems to be underrated for is longer and/or less comedicly-angry-political songs.

Robbie Schaefer also gets a strong vote. By the way, does anyone know if his first solo album is available anywhere?

Also, Ellis Paul, Ben Folds, Goody, Jim Infantino...

Yeah, I'm not good at just picking one of something ;-)
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 18 years, 11 months ago
I think Dan was next on the list. I was disappointed he didn't make the top 8. I'd have probably voted for him.
