Reviews:

Josh Woodward:

Three folk Gods unite

They're a cover band, but still amazing. It consists of the wonderful Dar Williams, Richard Shindell, and Lucy Kaplanski.

Amanda Wilson:

Happy to have seen them live...

Cry Cry Cry was one of the highlights of FRFF '99 for me. Their record is an essential purchase. "Cold Missouri Waters" blows me away every time I hear it and their take on Nerissa Nields "I Know What Kind of Love This Is" is breathtaking.

Rachel Beck:

I don't usually like cover bands, but when I heard them in Madison, WI (thought it was going to be just Dar), I thought, "These people were meant to sing together." If Northern Cross doesn't make you cry, you might not have a pulse.

K-Lyn:

Any band that includes Dar...

...is brilliant in my book! Covers Shmuvers...they are original and wonderful when the three come together.

Andrea Krause:

Covers with a gorgeous harmonic blend

What I love about this band is that they helped expand my horizons. Any band that does that is amazing. I got the CD because I loved Dar, so not only did this CD introduce me to songs/songwriters I might have overlooked, it also introduced me to Lucy Kaplansky and Richard Shindell. Shindell is one of the most amazing artists I know, and I am so happy I went down this path. Cry Cry Cry is amazing musicians doing amazing songs, and you will not be sorry if you check them out.

Kat Kunz:

yes. mm-hmm. right. i agree.

just another "me, too" post b/c everyone here already covered the reasons why you should buy their disc. each of the three artists involved are folk icons in their own right; bring them together and the result transcends words--it simply must be experienced.

Gordondon son of Ethelred:

Three Part Harmony rules

So what do three Great Songwriters do when they get together? Cover other people's songs of course. I love Richard Shindell, Dar Williams and Lucy Kaplansky as individuals and as a trio they have so much fun. The songs are so sad but they seem so happy together.

Shannon's in NC:

Better than the sum of the parts, if that's possible!

Even with them doing covers, it's an absolutely amazing album. A definite must-have album. I'm jealous of those who have seen them live.

Goob-O-Rama:

and...

When they play the songs together that they have written individually, somehow they transcend themselves. If you have ever heard the three of them play Lucy's "Ten Year Night" together, you know what I mean. They bring out the best in each other.

Seth GArrido:

the musing's of three great folk artist, all wrapped into one

Dar Williams, Lucy Kaplansky, and Richard Shindell (three artist who I would have no issue with reccomending singularly) Get together on a one album project, and cover in three part harmony a bunch of the best recent-ish filk songs around. (including don't fall on me by rem) It's one of the most worth while albums ever, and I was fortunate enough to see them perform together, and must say that all people alive should uy this album. Check it out, you'll dig it.

lawrence:

the ability to introduce you to tons of new music

not only was I introduced to the music of both Lucy Kaplansky and Richard Shindell by listening to this CD, I was also introduced to the songwriting of 9 other artists who have created songs worthy to be covered by this fantastic trio. (I was already familiar with The Nields and REM, and Richard Shindell has one of his own songs on it, so it wouldn't be fair to count him twice :) Cry Cry Cry is great for the ears but terrible for the bank account. but I think I can live with that. :)

beth-pseudocanuck!:

simply yummy

their cover of nerissa nields' "i know what kind of love this is" makes the nields' own version simply obsolete. here's hoping for a CCC reunion at frff2003!!

goovie is married!:

Dar, Lucy and Richard covering the likes of R.E.M., the Nields, Greg Brown, Julie Miller, and many more. A celebration of songwriters by songwriters with gorgeous three-part harmonies.

Bruce Rose:

As much as I love Dar, Lucy's songs on this collection put her to shame. In this configuration, Dar is the weakest (especially surprising since she's the strongest on solo work).
