operatic pop

Reviews:

jaye:

operatic pop

a member of one of the musical dynasties as son of loudon wainwright iii and kate mcgarrigle (of kate and anna mcgarrigle), rufus made a name for himself with his debut album, a self titled effort in 98. piano-based pop with a strong operatic influence, recalling the old standards but not in an ironic way. try the single "april fools" or the track on the big daddy soundtrack: "instant pleasure".

m. badass:

a cabaret act for a new generation

rufus pulls together the lush, smoky feel of old cabaret standards with whispers of jazz and pop into smooth, sweet, lovely songs of heartbreak, high school and opera fandom. he respects the past while making completely original, completely rufus music.

chris q murphy:

gentle orgasm of tears...

buy eponymous debut, listen to first minute, you'll get what i mean

bee:

rufus wainwright has gotten my through many tough days. the music is relaxing, but up beat. i love the song "foolish love".

Katherine, comedy junkie:

Some have compared him to Jeff Buckley

However, those who call his music "popera" have probably found the best word to describe it. He's one of the musically illustrious Wainwright/McGarrigle clan, but the opera influence shows especially in his music as compared to other family members. You need a fairly lengthy attention span, at least for the first recording, in order to settle in and enjoy. He writes a lot of aching love songs, but wit can accompany the wistfulness. I, for one, am eager to see what the new CD will be like.

Shawna login infrequent:

Incoherent like Bob Dylan, gorgeous like...yummmm...

I was thrilled to see this beautiful boy live, his excessive drunkeness aside. "Popera". I like that. As much as I hate the GAP, I thought it was *adorable* that Rufus sang that Ella Fitzgerald tune for the New Years season. Put a piano in front of this kid and he will melt your socks off. Give it a try. I dare ya :)

Kat Kunz:

...and a new album!

i was blown away by rufus's newest, _poses_. from the first few chords of the sing-song piano intro to "cigarettes and chocolate milk," you'll be hooked. even a cynic like myself (who saw him open for BNL in '98 & left unimpressed) was totally won over. wow.

elizabeth:

really really really good

well thats all to say really...
