Reviews:

Ken Perschke:

Guitar god +

Great songs, and he's one of the greatest guitarists you'll ever hear. I'd call him better than Clapton.

Lux Fruthor:

Trace the influences of any guitarist you admire and you'll find Thompson.

Clapton can write a song, and play his guitar, and it will make you laugh or cry; but Thompson can do all of that, and make you THINK too. He is innovative, clever, and his licks are polished and clear as a bell. 5 stars.

Dan Z.:

The best guitarist and songwriter you'll never haer of.

I have seen this man in concert about 10 times. Never do I come away without a face sore from grinning. The things Thompson can do with one guitar are unreal. His vocals, while a little out of the mainstream, are stunning. I can not hear "When the Spell is Broken" while driving. If I don't pull over or change the station, I'll cause an accident. Listen to his album "Hand of Kindness" and you'll never hear folk/rock music the same again. I promise.

Josh Drury:

Phenomenal guitarist and a great songwriter

Whether playing electric guitar with a band or solo on his acoustic, RT is amazing to hear and even more incredible to watch (still hard to believe 1952 Vincent Black Lightning is played on just one guitar!). And behind this instrumental talent, he's a very soulful singer, a great entertainer, and ranks way up there in songwriting both lyrically and musically. Don't miss a chance to see him.

Rachel Beck:

I've never heard Thompson live, but I love what I've heard of his recordings. He pops up in places I don't expect (when listening to "Way to Blue," a compilation of Nick Drake's music, I thought "Who's playing that guitar?"). His guitar work is so instinctive sounding that he makes me temporarily imagine that I can play. The man just might be a genius.

Gordondon son of Ethelred:

Richard Thompson is God

Richard Thompson was one of the founders of British Folk Rock. He was an original member of Fairport Convention. His Guitar playing is up there with Clapton though his fame isn't. The best line I heard about his guitar work is. "I didn't think anyone could do that anymore." His singing voice is strong and distinctive. His writing is brilliant. I can't hear Vincent Black Lighting 1952 without crying.

Said James, "In my opinion, there aint nothing in this world beats a 52 Vincent and a redheaded girl"

goovie is married!:

a woman sits down to write a music recommendation...

but is absolutely stumped. What can you say about richard thompson? How can you categorize or even adequately describe a man who can write, "1952 Vincent Black Lightning," "My Daddy is a Mummy," "I Agree With Pat Matheny," *and* "Psycho Street"? To say nothing of his secret identity *evilgrin*. Just go listen and see for yourself.

Gwen Evans:

If you want a good cry, listen to "1952 Vincent Black Lightning." Richard Thompson, as someone already mentioned, "is God," or at least a god. If I can one day play the guitar with 1/8 of the skill and finesse with which he plays, I will be a happy, happy, girl. Unfortunately, this will never happen.

He's on my list of people to hire to sing me to sleep. Even if he's singing about Sam Jones delivering those bones...

Jen Boylan:

Haunting songs, Great guitarists. Dumb hats.

Bruce Rose:

One show was all it took. His set at FRFF 2003 was out of this world. He is an absolute inspiration to the entire music world, whether they admit it or not. Rumor And Sigh is a decent place to start, but, honestly, is there a bad place to start?

Javier:

I wanna ride a 52' Vincent Black Lightning too!
What a smashing song!!!
