amazing tenor voice, great storyteller, incredible lyrics

I had heard of Vance Gilbert from other fruheads, but didn't hear him until Clearwater this year, and was completely blown away. Not only is his voice gorgeous, he tells great stories both in and between his songs. He can go from making you laugh out loud with his stories to having tears in your eyes during his songs. If you get the chance to see him live, RUN, DON"T WALK to get a ticket!

nate...:

hoooooooo boy!

This guy has got character. And what a voice! If you've got a chance to see him live, do NOT pass it up!

Andrea Krause:

Songs that'll break your heart, and a personality that'll kill you with laughter

This man's songs are simply beautiful, and he has the perfect voice to deliver him. And Vance must be experienced live. I mean it...go see him. Your cheeks will hurt from laughing. Just don't sit in the front row. He will heckle you if you're handy. :)

My most vivd memory

My most vivid memory of Vance Gilbert was at the Northampton Folk Festival in 1999. Vance went off-mic for a song, and filled the ampitheater with his loud clear voice. (Of course, there was also that time he showed up for the King of Spain with Fruvous...)

Kimberly aka Kris's Mom:

Vance is a vocal demigod.

Vance might amaze people when he sings outdoors; but seeing him in a tiny indoor venue is even better. The wood paneling shakes! Oh, and he was also the fifth Frvous at the best unrecorded Frvous show ever, which counts for twenty bonus points.

danced with Lazlo:

in short, the best.

Though I'd probably day that about at least 10 other people. The obnoxious Vance Gilbert absolutely must be experienced live. Amazing powerful vocals, great lyrics, majored in Biology. You'll love this guy. I certainly do.

Vance Gilbert's Looking Tasty...

And his music is too! Following a day of fun and adventure in Noho, we ran up to him... Vance: "Ah! Look at the scary hyperactive white children with ballons!" He really rocks, his voice is incredible, his stories lyrical, and he's hysterical! ...I also agree that he was awsome as the King of Spain... even if he didn't know the words. We just got to sing "When Jimmy Falls in Love" again... yay!

Squee:

He is made of good!

I saw him perform after a long day at work, having missed my family's Thanksgiving lunch/dinner... there was hardly anyone there, but he kept his energy up and talked very personally with the audience. Such a powerful singer! And he's so nice! I just love him to bits!

He'll make you laugh he will make you cry....

The first thing I noticed about Vance Gilbert was his whitty banter with himself. I was at Falcon Ridge `99 and I hear a 6 foot tall black man with hair like Mufasa from the Lion King claim he wants to be the Black Telitubbie! I was amused but his soft heady ballads didn't catch my attention. However 3 weeks later I saw him at the first Northampton Folk Festival. He Performed King of Rome and I was hooked. He sang off mic yet it carried up the hill and everyone can hear him perfectly fine. The song was so moving it left a lump in my throat. Over the years I have seen Vance Gilbert at his best (Closing out Falcon Ridge 2001) at his worce (A couple of weeks after his father passed away he seemed distant and plauged with technical dificulties, yet he still seemed to amuse everyone with "Is that what you white people do, Eat cookies and drink English Ale?") and as the King of Spain! He has amused and entertained me and moved me as well. I hope all of his future endevors are just as good!

Bruce Rose:

A showman...pure and simple.

One of my best memories from Falcon Ridge 2001 is Vance and his delightful stage presence. From his banter with the ASL interpreter, to the singalongs, to the crowd interaction... Vance is not to be missed, especially live. Somerville Live catches a lot of the magic, but at the same time, doesn't hold a candle to the live show.

angelmusicmaven:

as much a comedy show as it is a nice folk show. Dang funny.
