Reviews:

danced with Lazlo:

He's nuts.

He's got big balls. He's the Messiah. He knows who didn't marry Marylin Monroe. Check him out!

mickey:

he likes olives.

i first heard dan bern at clearwater '96, and because many mainstream music stores have no taste whatsoever, i have been able to find his cd's at bargain-basement prices. this guy is hilarious and ballsy (to paraphrase), and he plays the audience a ton in his shows. check him out. *note*: fifty eggs, one of his albums, is apparently not his favorite; he got into it with ani difranco (the producer) over production values, so maybe it's not the best barometer of his work. i like it okay, though.

Andrea Krause:

Dan Bern can make you laugh out loud, but also can surprise you with his soul.

Dan Bern is one of those artists I love and I can't really tell why. His voice and music aren't exceptional. I do love his lyrics though, whether they be silly, satirical, or serious. And he does indeed know how to work an audience live. I much prefer him live than on CD. He makes every show an interesting and unique experience. I'd check out his self-titled album, or in an ideal world, take the two discs of Smartie Mine and combine all the really good songs into one CD. :)

Kerri Chyka:

a smartie

I saw Dan Bern open for Ani a few years ago and he was fabulous. And funny as hell. I have not seen him since, but I dig his music a lot. "Chelsea Hotel" is my favorite of his serious songs. Bellissimo!

m. badass:

all hail the dan! uh...the bernstein! whatever he calls himself now!

pointed without being cynical, funny wihtout being cutesy, and the man can make you believe you (yes, *you*) were a cow for a day.

Jºnªthªn:

mollie - thanks for taking me to see Bernstein!

Dan is clever, biting, and not all his songs are in G. Having gotten in touch with his Lithuanian Jewish roots, he has gone back to the family name of Bernstein. He does an extremely energetic show, with a fair amount of banter like fruvous.

Jason Reiser:

So cool that they BANNED him from Falcon Ridge and Philly Folk Fest

I guess that's what happens when you get an entire hillside of folkies swaying and singing along to "Aliens came and fucked the monkey." Oh well... at least FRFF fans weren't offended from what I could tell. The folks at Philly were so uptight that they really made a fuss. Take your kids, but be prepared for a call from the school... "Your son insists on singing a song about the size of his testicles. We're concerned. The other kids are singing along - including the girls! Oh, the horror!"

Caroline Picker:

funny, hardcore folk

Gotta love bernstein!

hkath:

a true artist

he just never stops producing songs. I bet he writes one every day. Dan (oh, sorry, Bernstein) is capable of making me cry or laugh equally spontaneously. He's amazing. The end.

some skeleton:

I loved him.

He was very saucy and his sense of humor is kind of out of reach of most people. He also really knows his baseball...he makes funny stuff up on the spot really well too. I'd like to see him on that show Whose Line is it Anyway, with guitar.

Damn Incubus is Good!:

Ani's produced him so ya know he's gotta be good

i'd say more than singing its talking, but whatever he does is wonderful- funny/satirical/rock/folk

Lacey With An E:

Slightly off.

Actually, Dylan was the Bernstein of the 60s. Just ask him. The Messiah should know, right?

Kat Kunz:

fiery, funny and one fantastic performer

DO NOT miss dan bern live. his shows are an entertainment unto themselves. his newest album, _new american language_, is downright incredible-- you WILL love it, i promise. yep, dan, i'm goin' your way. thanks for askin'.

Mollie:

sounds a bit like bob dylan, nice folk and lots of humor

Gordondon son of Ethelred:

Folk With an Attitude

When I first heard Dan Bern I thought he was Dylan. His voice is similar but the writing is all his own. He has a total take no prisoners attitude. He writes of God, sports heros and his sister all with no holds barred. When he played with Fruvous they had such a rapport. They seem so different but there is something in common below the surface. Miss him live at your own risk. He's one of a kind. One fiat. His shows are uneven, if you see one show that isn't great give him one more shot.

Novac:

Folk with everything in place

Truly one of the best singer/songwriters traveling these days. He's quite the prolific artist, and there are dozens of unpublished songs--many of which are better than the published material! Track these songs down: Hear some irreverent humor in Lightning Jazz. Listen to one of his sentimental tracks titled One More Light. Laugh out loud to his "true story" in Famous Painter. Those who know Dan's music well, be sure to listen to Flying Geese, one of the most entertaining songs for Bernstein fans.

angelmusicmaven:

I guess this is an antirecommendation... I gave him a chance based on the love of all these Fruheads :)and saw him live... His band is very good and tight, and a couple of the mellow songs w/harmonies work, but I don't think he's funny AT ALL, and for the serious stuff, I know writers who deserve far more recognition.
