pianist with gorgeous voice

Reviews:

Misch:

Pianist, vocalist, amazing soft sounds.

Sarah has been described as "Imagine Tori Amos. Take away the freaky." Sarah's mastery of the piano/keyboard comes from studying classical piano at the University of Toronto. A great musician with soft songs like "Elliot", and "Blue Parade", and stronger hitting songs like "Playing Cards With Judas", and "Universe". Sarah has opened for and appeared with Moxy Fruvous on many occasions, including Frucon III shows, The Keswick Theatre in Philadelphia, Milestones in Rochester for the CD Release party for "Thornhill", and at the Grape Jam Festival in Glenwood, NY. Be sure to check out her CDs "Blue Parade", and "Universe".

Josh Woodward:

Mellow, jazzy, moody piano music.

The tori-amos-without-the-freaky description couldn't fit better. Sarah has beautiful, wispy piano songs. Most are dark. See her if you ever get a chance -- plus, she's one of the nicest people I've ever met. :-)

Amanda Wilson:

She can play the piano

Otherwise I found her work pretty derivative and not all that interesting. Apparently her songs are better when sung by other people, which is kind of cool. I liked when she would open for a reserved seat Fruvous show because it meant I had more time for dinner.

not that you care:

mmm mmm good....

sarah is one of my favourites. yeah, that's right, i'm on a first name basis with most ppl i don't know. besides adoring her piano skills, her lyrics are beautiful, moving, & poetic. that's all i'm going to say. listen to her.

Maggie Deegan:

woooooowww

she's great. Universe and Blue Parade. not only can she play the piano and sing, but she's got great taste in bracelets... ;)

Andrea Krause:

Emotive pianist/songwriter with an irresistible personality.

Sarah Slean is as talented as she is adorable. Her songs can range from light and wispy to deep and urgent. I"m more partial to her darker, deeper voiced songs like Weight and High. I can feel them in my stomach. (in a good way :) )

Denise Donaghy:

Emotional and strong artist

Saw her live before a Moxy Show... and was in awe of not only her voice and style, but meaningful lyrics. Gotta hear her :)

Caroline Picker:

pianist with gorgeous voice

First heard her as fruvous opener, she rocked my world!

bee:

sarah is so great! she is an awesome pianist and has a beautiful voice. her lyrics are original and great! if only we could all be so talented.

Shawna login infrequent:

Sweet piano girl

One of the many talented girls who carry the name "Sarah" :) Not only does she play fabulous music, but she's actually taking the time to STUDY it...going for a degree in theory from U of T, I hear. I don't know what kind of crazy stuff goes on in that girl's head, but thank god she shares it with us. Be it in her imagery-thick songs, or in her funny banter about strange dreams and obsessions with literature and cellists :) Better watch out...Hawksley Workman's producing her next album!

Megan can't believe it:

Everyone wishes they could play piano like this.

Seemingly enough can't be said about Sarah Slean- -she's sweet, with a voice like an angel, and can make a piano dance. Somewhere in the middle of Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan, yet with her own individual style, Sarah's songs are introspective and deep without being too heavy or overbearing. Equally wonderful is how well her songs are covered--listen to Tory Cassis singing "High" or Dave Matheson cranking out "Habit" (from www.sarahslean.com) and you'll appreciate her music even more for its versatility. "It's a very serious song of seduction sung from a girl to a boy. . .so you'll just have to pretend I'm a girl." --Tory Cassis, speaking of "High"

Kat Kunz:

sarah is amazing!

again, another artist i was sure i'd recommended already, but was totally floored to find that i hadn't. she's got a gorgeous voice and killer piano skills, with intense, passionate lyrics that will draw you in every time. best of all, she not only does justice to powerful, dark, introspective songs, she can also *rock* out--have any of you heard "bank accounts" off of a promo cd that radio stations received this summer??! i can safely say now that it's one of my favorite songs, period, by any artist. she even uses a *horn* section! :D and i can't begin to say how darn cool it is that she covers radiohead's "climbing up the walls"... love this girl. she's fantastic.

allya:

her cover of "climbing up the walls" is just as haunting as the original. i hate to compare musicians, but she definitely has a tori amos-like feel to her.

Bruce Rose:

Perfection is SO hard to describe...

^kat^ mentioned the radio sampler, which is my only brush with Sarah's music (now... if only I'd been on time to that Frushow!). That said, I love everything I've heard, and am actively seeking more more more! I hear a lot of Kate Bush and Tori Amos influence, but every woman that sings and plays piano could site those two. She definitelt ROCKS OUT on cuts like "Bank Accounts", but I'm more into the softer songs. Searing vocals don't need percussion.

Tom Fazzio:

Clean, true, playful, and did I mention HOT?

Sarah and her piano - I just love listening to her discs real loud though I'd rather see her live.

J. Andrew World:

The first time I heard Her I felt like a deer traped in headlights

She opened for Fruvous in Boston back in November of 1999, and I was amazed here is this girl who plays the Piano like it was nothing, adorible, and had an amazing band with her who played the most beitiful music I ever heard. Plus she has a cello player play with her. I love Cellos. I forgot which song whey played where her stand up base player Picks up a bow and playes the bass with the Cellest. I was so inthralled. Then her CDs are great, my personal favorate song is "Playing Cards with Judas" and "High". To top it off she is a really sweet person. I ended up being a part of a radio interveiw with her (And I forgot the question I always wanted to ask her, probally because of the part of the interveiw where she was talking about running around her house naked and my mind wandered.) and she Mentioned Danny Elfman as her favorate Composer. Then she requested a song from my CD! *sigh* Sarah Slean naked......

Novac:

Perfect music to take a relaxing bath to

Dunno where that lame line came from, but it's true. Universe is probably my favorite track personally, along with one of the hidden tracks on that same album.

Jerrilyh:

I love Sarah Slean. She's got a beautiful voice. The first song I ever heard was 'Angel' with Fruvous.
