Give a short summary of this band ("Soft folk with a jazzy twist" for instance):
Fun. Very fun.

Reviews:

Kat Kunz:

funny, quirky lyrics with great pop hooks and 5 very talented musicians.

now that they've hit the big time in the US, these guys aren't the obscure act they once were, but their live shows are still a lot of fun (and, like fruvous, they're not afraid to improv onstage). their new album, maroon, hits stores sept. 12, but their debut Gordon is quintessential quirk-pop and features the catchy tunes and wrenching ballads these guys are known for.

Josh Woodward:

Yeah. I have to agree.

You know who Barenaked Ladies are. Hopefully you know more than "If I Had A Million Dollars" and "One Week".. there's so much more to them. They're a truly wonderful band, once you push away that whole success thing.. :-)

chris q murphy:

to add to that...

one of the reasons i got into fruvous is because a friend of mine knew i like 'the ladies' and that they were from canada and gave me a copy of bargainville (naive? yes. - effective? yes.) anyhoo - i have to say that along with bargainville and a few others, the barneaked ladies second album "maybe you should drive", is one of the tru masterpieces of the 90's. not only is it PACKED with great playing, singing, songwriting (mostly about realtionships on this disc), but it stands up as a strong album as a cohesive unit...

nate...:

The most beautiful sad songs you'll ever hear....

These guys do indeed write fun, catchy songs.... but in addition, they write the most amazingly beautiful sad and bittersweet songs you'll ever hear.... you could just fall into their plush pillow of wonderful sadness and never get out again..... while loving every minute

Rachel Marie aka RAI:

Wanna cry or laugh?

I admit that I first heard these guys with "One Week" on the teenybopper radio station I listen to, but I LOVED them... and to find out that other Fruheads do too, I was automatically hooked. Not like that swayed my opinion before or afterwards.

Daancing Queen:

Beware of the Canadians....

You've probably heard of them, and while everyone tries to stay away from the BNL-Fruvous connection, these guys are great....I would recommend Gordon and Stunt - and Maroon coming out soon!

mickey:

i HATED this band when i first heard them.

picture 1500 dumbass frat boys screaming the lyrics to "if i had $1,000,000" and completely missing the point. god knows, i was introduced to both fruvous and bnl at frat parties. in only that respect, maybe my first year of college wasn't a complete waste. so i hated them and hated them, until someone i had a huge crush on was obsessed with them, so of course, i tried to listen more. and actually began to like them! so my current thoughts are that you really need "maybe you should drive" to experience the pinnacle of bnl. that and the b-side of "the old apartment", a song i love entitled "lovers in a dangerous time". just forget everything else.

Eri:

I've been hooked since day one!

I've had the cassette single of Enid/$1000000 ever since it first came out... bought each album as they've come... I love these guys, that's all there is to it. Now if they'd just come back and do some touring for their -Canadian- fans.....

Squee:

I actually knew that I liked them YEARS before I'd even heard any of their stuff

It's true! And then just in the past couple of years I've become hooked (most of my piano repertoire consists of BNL). People can say what they wand, but "If I Had $1000000" remains my favourite love song. And it's always refreshing to hear a lyric in a song that refers to a place I know. ^_^

Carly Costanza:

my first band :)

I first heard "Shoe Box" in fifth grade. They soon became "the best band on earth!", until eigth grade when I heard Moxy Frvous and Ben Folds Five. Now they all share that lovely title. Anyway, these guys are so much fun and if you've only heard "One Week," go out and buy "Gordon." You don't know what you've been missing.

Michael (foof) Maki:

Fabulous, smart pop music.

Mike "Racer" Yoshioka:

I could do it all for you, but I don't want to

The Gordon album is great fun. :) And to think it all started with them singing in a Much Music video booth.

K-Lyn:

When you can't listen to Moxy...listen to these guys!

Andrea Krause:

Great music, great fun, great lyrics, and a great deal better than people think

BNL is the first band I trusted fellow TMBG fans on. If they hadn't been so wonderful, I might not have tried Fruvous. :) BNL is a wonderful group. They have clever lyrics, really excellent music, and from what I've seen, great showmanship. I walked out of my first BNL show feeling like I'd had an *experience*, rather than just a concert. It made me proud to see a band of this sort that I love actually make it. Some may say they sold out...I'm just happy they're doing well.

Agent Scully:

I was a BNL fan before I was a fan of Fruvous in 1992. With almost 6 full length CDs released in the US (Gordon, MYSD, BoaPS, RS, Stunt, and soon to be released 'Maroon'), their live shows are full of energy, banter and cover tunes that would be enjoyed by any fan of Fruvous.

wild bill:

new and improved, with almost SIX full albums.

been listening to them longer than I was fruvous.. heard their indie tape from a friend of mine whom had heard some of their stuff on CFNY. Although I am still biased about Gordon being their best album, I have to admit I like a lot of their new stuff as well (typically their ballads tho).

Shannon's in NC:

Many different sides

You gotta love a group of guys who can do "be my Yoko Ono". I just love that song...don't ask why! Their ballads are some of the prettiest I've ever heard.

Steph Strenger:

Segued from Fruvous

I was actually introduced to these guys (3 years ago) before I was introduced to Fruvous. I liked the fact that they could improv on stage, and had fun with their music. It was totally different from what I had heard on the radio. I liked them instantly.

bee:

I liked BNL from the first time I heard "If I Had $1, 000, 000". People throw macaroni at their concerts; you can't hate a group that inspired that.

Eric Carlsen:

Stick with their older stuff...

I have witnessed their slow demise from intelligent quirk-pop with some of the best songwriting and live shows i have ever seen... to the rather unfortunate booring drivel of commerical radio hit seeking. If you missed their early shows in '94-'96 I feel truly sorry for you! They seem to have lost all the creativity that made them truely great. (I hope MF never has the same fate!)

Michael:

A main influence.

For sure. These guys are good musicians, and rock in concert. Enough said.

J. Andrew World:

A Poor Man's Moxy Frvous

At least they were. A talented band who had simular origins the lads emerged from Toronto, and much like fruvous there histories seem to mirror, however BNL took the track of pop music and there music hasn't been as smart as it use to be, but it sure sounds good!

That Elly Chick:

Fun. Very fun.

Great group, and their Canadian! Kinda like a Moxy Fruvous gone international type deal.

Katherine, comedy junkie:

Like Fruvous, often unjustly labelled a "novelty" band

I've loved them since the release of "Gordon". Their music is eclectic, running from ridiculously goofy to achingly sad, and always very well performed. A lot of reviews of "Maroon" have said such things as "they've finally grown up!" I quite disagree. Just listen to "Great Provider", "Brian Wilson", "Blame It On Me", "The Flag", "Straw Hat and Dirty Old Hank", "Call Me Calmly", "I'll Be That Girl", or "Alcohol" and see if you don't find perceptive, sometimes biting social commentary. I like their recent stuff as well, but am finding that some of it is getting a little less interesting.

Jen Cantwell:

Rock, Pop, Folk and Humour... all wrapped up in one!

If there ever were such a thing as an identical twin to Moxy Fruvous... Barenaked Ladies would be it! Although the sound of Barenaked Ladies has 'matured' over the years, they are still deep down goofy guys. Hard work and determination started to pay off for BNL when "The Old Apartment" (Live) broke at US Radio in 1996. A live show is the best place to catch a feeling of these guys...... Even though they've strayed from the 'folk sounding' band they once were... keep an open mind when you check out most current release "Maroon".

Bruce Rose:

Lyrical Quirks and fits of wisdom

My first brush with BNL was "The Old Apartment", played on one of those stations that refuses to recap their playlist. It took me almost a year to figure out who they were! If you don't already know BNL, imagine Fruvous with a major record contract.

Alex Conaway:

Steadily going downhill, I am very sorry to say...

lawrence:

not a one hit wonder

most people have probably heard "One Week." Yes, it's a good song, but with however many albums they have now (I've lost track!), there's so much more to this band. yet another band that plays in numerous different styles, the whole time maintaining a distinct sound. great arrangements, especially where keyboards and bass are concerned.

betsy =):

you know the speil. i just think the world of them. they've worked hard and their efforts have made them a success. i think maroon is a wee bit of a disappointment, but gordon is such a solid album, it's amazing. and i would so have steven page's babies.

Kyle Napier:

BNL IS THE BEST! Yup

David A. Scott:

Upon listening to such songs as "If I Had $1000000", "Be My Yoko Ono", "Another Postcard", and the #1 hit "One Week", a casual listener may write BNL off as a novelty act. But the addition of songs like "Brian Wilson", "Call and Answer", "Shoebox", and "The Old Apartment" reveal lyrics that are not only funny and clever, but often sharp and sincere. They make a vividly enjoyable presence in concerts and music videos as well. Though still widely underrated, BNL are one of the most popular Canadian bands to cross the US border, and rightly so.

Prinut:

Just...amazing. I have no words to explain how much I love this band. They have the power to pick me up on those horrible terrible days and they also have the power to fit to any mood at any time. If that made any sense. Which is why I can't explain how much BNL rocks. They just...do.
