Filk- light folky pop rock about sci-fi and comic books, often humorous

If I had to pick the band I know most similar to Fruvous, it would be Ookla. I'm no good at describing music styles, but if you like Fruvous, you'll like it- trust me :) Lyrics are usually humorous, sometimes poignant. Topics focus largely on sci-fi/fantasy, cons, and comic books, but sometimes wander into relationships, lost childhood, and other areas. My favorite is one of the lightest, Number One (on Less Than Art), about the lack of bathrooms on the Enterprise, as told by Riker: "Pretty soon I'm gonna boldly go where no one's ever gone before." The one that affects me most is My Secret Origin (on Super Secret Clubhouse), about a boy who was told he could grow up to be anything he wanted, but he wanted to be one of the characters from his books: "I'm still waiting for my Lady of the Lake to come and crown me king..." Sound bites are available on the site. For further notes, email me at [email protected].

Jen's comments are right on, but I would add that some songs don't fit into the scifi comic books world and those are the ones I like. No, not their often-played-on-Dr. Demento-radio "Stop Talking About Comic Books Or I'll Kill You" but their "Tandem Bicycle" and "Animal" type songs. My favorite disk by far is the new one: Smell No Evil.

Novac:

Fabulous group with unique, creative lyrics.

Especially great for those who are comic book fans/geeks and for anyone who grew up in the mid- to late-70s. Songs of particular interest for a typical Frvous fan, I think, would be Viewmaster, Adam Curry, AGeD, Das ber Tber, My Secret Origin, and Curb Your Dogma. I know that Mike Ford enjoyed their song Stop Talking About Comic Books Or I'll Kill You. Non-comic geeks can also enjoy the band and their songs to its fullest, just as Christian Conservatives (like me) can enjoy Frvous songs like Stuck in the 90s. :)

Mythfish:

Yes, Ookla is great fun. As a comic book geek, I'd have to say Super Secret Clubhouse is the best. Even if you don't enjoy wacky rock, if you like comics you NEED that CD.

Major Fruvous:

I've seen Ookla 3 times at sci-fi cons in western ny. The guys got some good tunes that are funny and witty. Just when you ask Adam for an autograft don't give him free reign.

Really great stuff! - even if you're not into comics or sci-fi, check them out. My favorite CD overall is Smell No Evil, but their older stuff is worth a look also. This is a band to keep your eye on!
