Cynical, dark portrait of how unhappy we all really are.

This film is so dark, and so cynical, and yet very funny and poignant. Most of all, I would say that it's an honest depiction of how dysfunctional most of us really are.

this is such a hard movie to review. it was good - marvelous writing, acting, etc.

but devastating. i don't think i could ever see it again.

I have devised a test of personality for potential friends. It consists in having them sit down and watch the first, pre-credits scene of this movie. By watching their reaction, I will determine whether they "get it" (as Jian would say) and whether or not I want to be friends with them.

Todd Solondz is a true master.

And you can never quite look at Phillip Seymour Hoffman the same way after this movie...

extremely disturbing, but extremely well done.
