On the one hand, any Tori Amos that sounds nothing like Strange Little Girls and To Venus and Back is somewhat refreshing. On the other hand, this album is very much a pale echo of Scarlet's Walk - an album whose major virtue was that it was a pale imitation of Boys for Pele, which was itself a great album. Where Scarlet's Walk's pale imitation was a breath of fresh air after a pair of truly terrible albums, this album is not, ultimately, a return to form as much as it is a spinning of the wheels. The best that can be said is that she hasn't backslid.
