my mom's allergic to pine, too. i have never known a real christmas tree. hence, i like fake ones just fine. better, even, b/c you can do a more thorough job decorating them.

she's allergic to oranges, too, if you're keeping track. --k.

I prefer Kwaanukkamas

But seeing as how I celebrate Chanukka, I guess my input is pretty irrelevent.
J · 21 years, 8 months ago
its not christmas with out the fear of the tree going up in flames...plus the smell of a real tree rocks....christmas is already becoming way to plasticy dont give in and ditch the tree...
I use live trees and then plant it in spring...actually last year i had a palm tree its still in my apartment....im babbling

who cares as long as you have fun with it
Shelly · 21 years, 8 months ago
gotta have a real tree.

though i personally haven't had a full-sized one for about 3 years, i wanna try to do one again this year.

and i manage to keeeeeeeeeeeel a norfolk pine about every year.

yah.
ellen, formerly evil · 21 years, 8 months ago
At work we have this white flocked tree. A real tree, sprayed with stuff so it's not a fire hazard. It's creepy. It doesn't even need water. And now it's covered in the most gawdawful decorations, and I get to look at it all day long. woo!
Bel kjfdxcvuyjh8 · 21 years, 8 months ago
i think fake christmas trees might be okay if they smelled as nice and looked as nice as real trees.
*joolee* · 21 years, 8 months ago

It just doesn't seem like Christmas to me if it's not a real tree. The cutting down, the dragging, the smell, the watering. It's all Christmas to me. I just can't imagine getting into the spirit while putting the tree together out of several metal/plastic pieces and fluffing up the fake branches. :)

Though fake trees in and of themselves don't scare me as much as the pre-lit ones or *shudder* the fiber optic ones that cycle colors. :)

nate... Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
Yeah, exactly.
You go out into the woods (or to a farm)... find a tree .. bring it home on the roof of the car.... try to get it through doors.
heeehee
Some of my fondest childhood memories, really.
The whole ritual... that and the smell! Mmmmmm... nothing like fresh pine. :) when I was a little kid I used to collect the needles so that I could smell them in my room. *grin*

Christmas would just not be christmas without the tree.
Kentucky Kesia · 21 years, 8 months ago
We actually have a fake tree with the lights already on it. It's awesome - all we have to do is unfold it, and we're ready for ornaments. And as for the smell, we burn a pine-scented candle, and no one can tell the difference.
J Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
maybe we should replant clear cut lots with these fake christmas trees if they are so great and noone will know ...
i think we have solved a major environmental problem
thanks santa
sheryls · 21 years, 8 months ago
growing up in a somewhat jewish family, we had a fake xmas tree when i was really really young, but stopped putting it up when i aws about 8 - just before my parents split up. my mom's family was catholic (she converted waaaaaaaaaaaaay later - even after she divorced my jewish father).

i know how xmas trees smell and all that, but i was never a big fan of pine smell, and it definately never reminded me of xmas.

oh, well. but potatoes and onions certainly remind me of hannukah :D

I agree! There is definately a certain smell that comes from a Jewish mother or grandmother's kitchen... mmm..

:D
J Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
being from a mainly english family the smell of beer and whisky reminds me of christmas.
zil Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
yeah... we's of Irish desent... whiskey (and booze in general) reminds me of all major holidays.
Talcott Back · 21 years, 7 months ago
mmmmmmm...good smell :)

Of course, the best is having that smell comming from the kitchen mixing with the christmas tree pine in the livingroom.

But then again, the only traditional christmas food my family has is pizza...

Melinda J. Beasi · 21 years, 8 months ago
I like real trees. I can stand fake trees, but they wouldn't do the same thing for me. Everything about a real tree just takes me right back to my childhood... going out to get one (preferably cut one down)... the drama of getting it straight in the stand... the smell, the decorating, the music playing, even the red bumps on my hand afterward from getting stuck by needles. It is all about history... all about my family and my youth. That's what Christmas is to me... family, smells, sounds, feelings... and the tree is a big part of that.

nate... Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
Exactly.

I think the Jehovah's Witnesses have the right idea, no x-mas. Not that I don't love giving gifts however, I just hate getting them. I don't know how to react when it really sucks. I do the, "Oooh, that's real, great, there. I think it's just, wow.." I'm not a very good liar. I also have the problem of going over-board buying gifts. I have 3 younger brothers (13 and under) and was going to buy them each a little stereo ghetto blaster style thingy, then noticed dvd players were on sale, but wait! They have the tv/vcr/dvd units for.... $280 each... hmm $280 times 3..... $840... plus tax, Oh.. well.. If I don't eat this month... and next, I can afford it! But I can't just buy them dvd players, then they wont have any dvd's to play on it.. okay, a few each.. but what if one doesn't like the one's he's got and then thinks I'm a jerk for not getting him the one's I gave another one. Then I end up in the store for hours trying to work it all out. Gift certificates you say? No, because what happens with that, is they have to wait for my mom to get up to wanting to take them to get them, then they have all this time with a tv/vcr/dvd player thingy and nothing to watch. Oh. It just occured to me, it has a vcr on it too. Crap, they've got video's, I didn't have to buy them dvd's at all. Point is, I hate x-mas.
nate... Back · 21 years, 7 months ago
See, I view xmas as a time to be with family, nothing more.

To me, it's about family, food, and the tree.
the gifts are just added fun. :)

Oh, and it's got jack to do with anything religious, IMO.
Melinda J. Beasi Back · 21 years, 7 months ago
Yeah, I have to agree. My family gives gifts, but it was never the focus of it all... it's all about being together and happy, and all the sights and smells that go along with it.

Funny thing for me about the religious part... it isn't a religious holiday for me, but for some reason when it comes to Christmas music, I much prefer the older, religious songs to newer santa-based (or other) songs. I love Christmas carols to an extreme extent, and what I love are old old carols, and that's all about religion. Well, except for me. For me, it is all about beautiful music. That music is just beyond beautiful.
A girl named Becca Back · 21 years, 7 months ago
See...for me, Christmas is not Christmas without nativity scenes, religious carols, and Mass. When I was little, of course, church was just something that we had to get out of the way before I could open presents...but it's a huge part of the holiday now. (Especially since I've been in a choir that sings at Christmas Eve Mass, so it doesn't get in the way of presents. Just kidding, of course.) My family isn't very good about decorating...I can remember more than one year where we didn't even get a tree until the 24th. But going to church is a much more reliable tradition, and I can't really imagine Christmas without it. (On a slightly related note, I remember the one Easter of my life that didn't involve going to church...it was really hard to deal with, though I hadn't expected it to be, and not something I plan to repeat.) So I guess the Catholics got to me more than I thought. :)
nitsita · 21 years, 7 months ago
I'm all in for real trees.. but my roommates wanted either a _big_ real tree, or a little fake tree.. and since we don't have place for a _big_ real tree, fake was judged best
