morals and morrass

   Discussion: morals and morrass
siobhan's a londoner · 21 years, 1 month ago
thing is today I did some morally reprehesible things and I tend to believe in karma but the man selling magazine subscriptions in the street gave me a hug cos I signed up for one weeks ago (it is a magazine that all the profits go to charity) so maybe my bad karma will be delayed or maybe i wont get my job...what do you think about karma?

The way you put it, Karma sounds conceptually very similar to the "Pie in the Sky when you die" syndrome

I don't believe in karma as it relates to Buddhism and its religious notions. In general however, I do believe if you are generally a nice person, other people will like you, and hence be nice to you. Some people call this karma, I just call it common sense.

The idea of karma in Buddhism actually relates more to reincarnation. The theory is as follows: If you, as a human, are immoral, then you are reincarnated as a lesser form of life. If you, as an animal or other living thing, treat all life around you with respect, you are reincarnated as a higher form of animal (including human). Once you become human, your goal is to attain enlightenment and reach the end of the Samsara, or cycle of souls, and reach Nirvana.

Yeah, since "Karma" is sort of strictly a next-life thing I like to think of the payback or come-uppances we recieve in this-life as Instant Karma. thank you John Lennon.

I just (before reading this thread) sent a "thank you" e-card to a good friend of mine, thanking her for listening to me, writing:

"If Karma were worth money you'd be a millionaire just for listening to me."

Yeah, kinda sappy, and I probably unconsciously stole it form someone, but it's true -- she'd make an amazing therapist. She surely is an amazing friend and co-worker.

Anyway, I do believe in Karma, and apologizing those times I give out bad Karma :)

doesn't matter excessively, the morrally reprehensible things were ignoring a beggar and also um...oh yeah blanking a creepy guy who doesn't know my name so cals me "beautiful"....so not the best thing in the world but not the worst either.  And i got the job, I found out today so it all worked out fine.  What i meant is you get what you give essentially be it in this life or the next...

It's morally reprehensible to ignore a beggar?

Rude perhaps, but morally reprehensible?

I don't think so.

I think the name "siobhan" is morally reprehensible. Actually, come to think of it, it means the same thing as my name... damn!

:o)

Stop insulting my name! Both names mean GRACE OF GOD which is quite interesting but not actually reprehensible.  It is pretty low though to insult a name.  I got upset about ignoring the beggar because I used to not do that hwere I lived before but this on eis not nearly so polite and there are so many in this city that it means you end up with NOTHING! Also many do not seem to appreciate a cup of tea or chat, some do but many simply want money.

yeah, leave the poor girl alone. beggars can be totally rude sometimes. and siobhan should be trying to conserve her student loan ;)

and before you say anything, i *do* give to beggars, particularly on my way home from the town centre - there's always this woman who begs in the underpass to the bus station and i always give her whatever loose change i have on me. she's nice and polite and always says please and thankyou, and if i don't have anything on me i tell her i'm sorry and she always says 'that's alright darling, have a nice day'. going into Reading is a nightmare though, because there are people begging from every doorway. i gave away 5 on one stretch of road once.

and also. i know a girl who felt so sorry for them that going home every day she would buy a big issue from each of the three different vendors along the way. i think by the end of the week she had no money left. oops. :D

i thought this was supposed to be a discussion about karma, anyway?? ;)
