Things you'd like to do to Camp Hell...

Discussion: Things you'd like to do to Camp Hell...
John J. Ryan · 21 years ago

For thsoe of you don't know, Camp Hell was a bunch of frat boys who were loud, screaming obscenities, drinking, dong drugs, having open fires, and making life so uncomfortable for Upper Camp Fruvous people that some Upper Camp people won't be camping next year.

So, here is your chance to vent. What would you do to Camp Hell to, well, resolve the problem?

Well, Neal and I already wrote bloody essays on our FRFF surveys, and we're hoping somebody will listen. I wish I felt like we could talk to the Camp Hell kids, but if they won't listen to security, they certainly won't listen to us -- and those who have comps for the festival seem to think that they're above the festival rules and the other festival goers -- and in a way, it's true, because it means they can't be kicked out or disciplined in any way.

My other worry is that Camp Hell will cause Falcon Ridge to become Philly Folk, a heavily controlled camp site with no loud music of any kind after main stage, a security gestapo, and generally no fun allowed after hours. All thanks to a few assholes.

That's also one of my worries...I want safety, and I want relative sanity, but I really hope that we'll be able to continue our after-hours singing, performances, and general silliness. There has to be a balance between all-out chaos and a police state.

Steve's putting together a concise list of his own experiences with Camp Hell and the other hellions, which he will post on the camp_fruvous_frff board in addition to sending it to the festival people. But I think the main thing here is we *all* have to state our case -- his experiences don't reflect everyone else's. The more the organizers hear about this, the more likely they are to act.

Regarding the "police state" issue, I don't think that's the tack the fest people want to take, since they're actively encouraging after-hours MUSIC up on the ridge. But if we want them toget this under control so that people feel safe,we need to give them clear descriptions ofthe problem and come up with ideas for how it can be addressed. My own idea -- having heard thatsome of thesefolks pretty much ignored the younger, less experienced, or less authoritative camping-crew volunteers -- is that we need roving security volunteers -- the more bouncer-looking the better -- up on the hill, especially at night.

This doesn't apply to Carey and Neal's essay, but if you didn't fill out a survey at FRFF, Anne Saunders tells me there will be one online at the fest website in a few days. That's a good place to start.

This sounds awful.. I hadn't even heard about it until today.

:(

I would suggest that everyone affected by this write about it on their survey!!!

I think it wasn't just Camp Hell, though. there was another group of fratboys next to them that was bad in other ways, and I noticed when we were getting ready to leave on Sunday that they had left trash all over the hill. there were still tents there at the time, though, so maybe they cleaned that up when they took their tents down, but based on the way they behaved during the festival, I doubt they did.

That guy... you know the one... was he from camp hell?
lawrence Back · 21 years ago
no, I think he was from the other camp. the two camps just fed off each other really well.

all I know is that even if I stay in a hotel next year, I might buy a camping ticket anyway, just in case they decide to finally start enforcing that rule.

i was camped up near camp hell, a little to the right, along the back of the hill by some trees. intersting stories, one of which i'll share right now. maybe two.

i saw a bunch of idiots at camp hell playing hackey sack. nothing wrong there, except when you submerge it in kerosene, and then proceed to light it on fire prior to using it for its otherwise intended purposes. smart, guys.

also, one kid came up to my campsite a handful of times because the person i was with kept inviting stupid idiots (read: camp hell members) to our spot (oh well). interesting thing about this kid was that on Saturday he seemed to have a cast on his foot. I asked him what happened, and he told me that someone was holding a knife and he took it upon himself to KICK IT OUT OF THE PERSONS HAND. Well, yeah. Knife-foot. Kung-Fu Star that kid ain't.

I wont even get into talking much about that guy who had obviously done too much acid and could never find a decent place to park his shitty, shitty car that didn't happen to be in the middle of the road, with his lights on. Very, VERY strange guy. Wasn't a member of camp hell, but he had enough quirks to stick out in my mind.

Ahh. Falconridge. You are losing your mind.

Anyone know who is headlining this year? I'm too lazy to check the website, and I'm about to go out the door.

Steve told me that Camp hell wasn't the problem after the first night. It was other people near them.

On the theory that they are really working together I'd invade them before they could use they weapons of mass destruction.

was it actually called camp hell or is that the affectionate name for it? :)
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 1 month ago
they called themselves camp hell. they had a sign and everything. and gordon's right, it wasn't just camp hell--there were a few other groups who were also problems. but they all kind of congregated in the same area. right next to the budgiedome.
