Poll: Do you think a person should be allowed to marry more than one person?

it seems like there might be too much room for abuse there.

multiple wives, by & large, don't seem to do very well, & the state seems to overlap things like woman trafficking & statutory rape too often for me.

I wouldn't marry�1 person, but dating 2 people, who know about each other and are also dating each other?� Yes.� I am doing that now, and I'm very happy.� Though I wouldn't say it's for everyone.

don't priests/rabbis/etc usually marry dozens of people in their careers? :)

Hard for me to weigh in on what should be "allowed". Personally, I can only conceive of being in a monogamous relationship. But I'm open to the fact that my way is not the only valid way. So I don't really know the answer to this. I believe multiple marriages can and do sometimes lead to pretty bad situations. But I have no way to tell if that's a product of the multiple marriage itself or the character of those involved.

And yet again I cannot get off of the fence on an issue. I don't know if that means I'm open to seeing many sides of an issue or if it just means I'm wishy-washy. Heee. :)

I'm not opposed, but there would need to be some laws put in place to keep it from being abused, which it could so easily be.

I assume we're talking multiple spouses at the same time. As far as I know, that's the one that Larry King doesn't do.

I agree with Andrea. I know polyamoury wouldn't work for me personally, but it's not my place to say what should and should not be permited for everyone. If there are folks out there that feel they can make a multiple marriage work, then all the luck to them. But bad situations can definately come about. Somebody above mentioned stat rape issues, and that definately is a concern, i know, with polygamy in Utah for example. But if all parties involved are adults and are doing it consentually (not, for example, one guy has two wives who don't know about each other), then go for it.

Is it sad that I read your post title and thought you were talking about computer ports and not marriages?

I don't understand how people drunk of their arse can go to a chapel in vegas and have it be a legal binding marriage because they fit the one man one woman formula and that is more "allowed" than other people in another combination who have made a thoughtful commitment...

I agree with Andrea and Jillian on this. If adults are making consensual decisions, out of something resembling self-awareness and knowledge of their options, and of any of their past issues that have family dynamics, I don't see why it should be a concern of the state.

But if it's children who have been "indoctrinated" in polyamory (not simply raised in a polyamorous family unit with awareness that not every family is structured that way) who upon puberty or shortly thereafter are given by their parents to become one of multiple spouses in a household, then I've got huge concerns because it seems coercive and enslaving. And the indoctrinating groups, usually religions or cults, are always polygynous, haven't you noticed -- not polyandrous or open to each "spouse" having several spouses in the family unit -- so it's always girl-children who find themselves one of several spouses of one "patriarch".

For me it's a matter of adults making decisions for themselves, out of a position of knowledge, vs. children being signed over as "property" without ever having a chance to develop into self-reliant, self-aware individuals genuinely capable of choosing and pursuing their own life path.

If you read "Under the Banner of Heaven" by Jon Krakauer, he makes a pretty good case that polygamy as practiced by modern day Mormon fundamentalists is pretty much institutionalized child abuse. It's always young girls (13-16) who are married off to their 50 year old cousin, uncle, dad's best friend, or whatever, impregnated, and basically kept in bondage. Then, since they're technically unwed mothers, they go on welfare. Great.

One could probably say that having more than one wife might be spreading your love out too much....like too little butter over too much toast.

This does seem like child abuse, but i'm not really sure.
I heard a quote once while watching an investigative journalism show. It was from a guy who lived just a little ways away from a polygamous community.
