and besides, i have to play the violin. so i have to keep them short anyway. :P

I voted for the No-gross option but it's not my reason. I don't bite them because my teeth have long been so hurty and weak that I'm afraid of hurting myself in my teeth by biting on my nails. I just rip the nails apart.

andrea, i do that, too. and bite them. then i go thru periods where i grow them, and they start looking really nice, and then i end up in some really high-stress situation and, well, there they go.

...which isn't often, 'cause I keep a tiny pair of clippers in my pocket. I use to bite my nails for a LONG time, finally breaking out of the habit a few years ago and using the clippers more often.

The last choice reminds me of a story. In college my friend was taking a lab where they had to test their blood to find the type. They got the blood by pricking their finger. After he obtained his sample a woman asked him if she could use some of his blood. He said, "What's the matter you don't have any blood?" He then looked at her and saw she only one hand. He felt like going home and painting his tongue black.

might just be urban legend but I heard about a man in Norway (ithink) who got really stones and got the munchies so he cut of and fries his own hand and had it in a sandwich...(Ithink it wass his hand or maybe his foot....the last option reminded me of that story which is not embarassing just sometjhing that will maybe put you off your food...or getting stoned/high)

"and i'd, like probably look at my foot, and think it was a sandwich, and then put salt on it, and try to eat it, and it'd be like "Oh! It's my foot!'"

i'm actually more apt to bite my cuticles. i stopped biting my nails a few years ago, but i still chew on them slightly.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

I rip apart and bite the skin around my nails constantly. I often have fingers covered in bandaids because I've destroyed the skin so badly.

(she types as she takes a break from chewing on her thumb)

emilie is CRANKY Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
word, word, word. i have 2 band-aids on as i type. :D
stealthlori Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

Ipickmy cuticles to shreds all the time. Fingers AND toes. The toes are thedigits most likely to require bandaids. Yuck.

I used to bite my (finger)nails a lot when I was a kid, but once I started developing problems with my jaw (tmj issues) I couldn't get agood enough grip to actually bite thru them. So now I tend only to bite for smoothing purposes,if I have a broken or tattered nail and don't havescissors or an emery board handy to deal with it.

Does that count as "semi-reformed nail-oriented OCD" or something like that?

If I'm nervous, stressed, excited, embarrassed or angry, I'll chew on my thumbnail.
George E. Nowik · 20 years, 9 months ago

good heavens yes. i've been doing so since the age of about 4 years old and have worked it down to an artform to the point where i no longer need nail clippers. it's actually rather scary how accurate i am at biting my nails in a perfect semicircle pattern. :D

Just to say - I'm a nail biter too. A particularly vicious bite that made me bleed, while I was reading comments in yesterday's poll, was what spawned this one. *laughs*
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 20 years, 9 months ago
I usually use my nail clippers but sometimes I use my teeth. Once after using the dental method someone complimented me on the shape of my nails and wanted to know if I had had a manicure.
Erato · 20 years, 9 months ago
Yes, I'm a frequent nail biter. Right now, I have tips and the damn nails wont' come off. This bothers me for some reason.
Bel kjfdxcvuyjh8 · 20 years, 9 months ago
well, don't bite them, but still never cut them. i rip 'em off. its so fun. you should try it.

PS-i realized that sounds like i meant the whole nail. no way, that ould hurt. just the white insenitive part.
nate... Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
"just the white insenitive part."

The technical term is the "clod".

Ever since I got so rich, I've hired people to bite my nails for me.

since i grew teeth.
Yvonne · 20 years, 9 months ago
I used to bite my nails, then switched to the skin around them, then stopped after seriously screwing up my skin. You can still tell that I used to bite it by looking at it closely. I wouldn't do it anymore because I'm scared of my own blood, and because my nails look nice and they're very hard and I probably couldn't bite through them if I tried.

I've never been a biter. I sometimes lightly chew the tips of my nails when I'm bored or nervous, but not such that it does any damage to them. Eery once in a while if I can't find clippers I go the extra step to biting off a sharp or ragged edge that I just can't stand to have there any longer. I find that extremely unpleasant and have never understood how people can do that... my nails are quite difficult to bite through.
Rose · 20 years, 8 months ago
I have been biting my nails for as long as I can remember. I have a site about nailbiting
