imsomnia, yeah, but I still seem to get pretty much enough sleep. just at random times. :)
Yvonne Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
I get insomnia around exam time...the rest of the year I just can't fall asleep till 3 am and have to get up around 8:30 am. I never get enough sleep unless I can sleep in or take a nap in the afternoon.
meh · 20 years, 7 months ago
I opted for "other" because I seem to swing back and forth between not getting enough (and/or not sleeping at all) and sleeping way too much. Mostly in my off season.

When I'm working, I try to get enough sleep because if I don't, my job is next-to-impossible. It also helps that I'm usually really worn out at the end of the day.
Mollie Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
Same here. Except I can do my job on little sleep.
stealthlori · 20 years, 7 months ago
I spend way too much timetrying to get to sleep, and once I'm asleep I wake up frequently and then have trouble getting back. Net effect is I sleep too much, but still am usually tired.
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 20 years, 7 months ago
Now I sleep fine and get about 7, to 7.5 hours of sleep most nights. A few years ago I was getting by on four. When I first got addicted to FHDC I would be up on Shellywall till two thirty then talk to Carey til four then I'd get up for work at eight. That was just insane.
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
those were the days. :) at that point, i was working 9-5 at the symphony monday/wednesday/friday, and i had 8am classes tuesday/thursday and a 9am class on sunday. i usually slept from about 6-10pm and then from 4-7am.

now that i'm a grownup with a 8 1/2-hour workday and an hour-long commute, i try to get to bed at around 11pm and wake up at 6:30am, but it's always been hard for me to sleep, and i've always had problems with nightmares, so what sleep i get isn't always as restful as it could be.
Phoenix · 20 years, 7 months ago
There were times when insomnia was my middle name:) And Reinhard's rule no. 5 says: You can catch up on sleep when you're dead. Due to a genetical defect I'm not able to fall asleep before midnight
The average I get these days is about 5 hours. However a point to be considered is that I'm mixing languages when I'm really insomniac (I'm always afraid of talking latin at FRFF ;-D) and I might get sociopathically shy...
Josh Woodward · 20 years, 7 months ago
I've always needed more sleep than average. It goes in cycles, but usually I need around 9 hours. I can get by with less for a few days (think FRFF), but don't expect me to be useful the next morning! I guess to be fair, that means I get "enough", because I always sleep until I want to wake up, but I'd rather sleep less.

Heh, it would have been fun to watch the change in this poll from midnight when all the insomniacs voted to the morning, when the rest of us woke up.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 7 months ago

I need 9 hours to feel fully rested, too. I just never...get it. :) I feel so robbed if I go to bed early since I want to make the most of my non-work hours. But then I'm very tired all during the week. It sucks.

K-Lyn Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
That's me exactly. I try to catch up on the weekends (really it's all about not having to get up since I'm NOT in ANYWAY a morning person) but I drag through the week. My co-workers just think that's how I am. They don't see my second wind that I get around 9 PM.
Zach · 20 years, 7 months ago

*falls out of bed and crawls to the computer*

no. my roommates alarm is loud and it never wakes him up, so I wake up at 15 minute intervals beginning about an hour before I'd like. That and finals week is fast approaching.

sheryls · 20 years, 7 months ago

i havent slept enough since college.

freshman year:
8am, wake up, dress, go to class.
9:35am, go back to sleep.
10:45am, wake up, go to 11am class.
12:00pm, eat, go back to sleep.
3:45pm, wake up, go to 4pm class.
5:30pm, eat, go back to sleep.
6:45pm, wake up, go to 7pm class.
8:20pm, take a short nap.
10pm go to work.
12am - go to sleep.
4:30am - wake up, go rollerblading.
5:15am, go back to sleep :D

ah, those were the days :D

Josh Woodward Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
And I can vouch for this. You were scary. :)
sheryls Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
and i'm not now?
nitsita · 20 years, 7 months ago

I've been getting loads of sleep since I stopped going to school about two months ago, and yet, I'm still always tired. And no appetite. And dizziness. But yeah. So I sleep a lot, but it never seems to be restful...well sure, once in awhile, but not much. and by that evening, well, back to being tired.

And yesterday when I went to see the doctor about major throat/sinus/ear issues, he just shrugged it off. So I just decided to go see someone else when I feel better about my throat nad sinuses and acctually know what's wrong with me regarding that (they're supposed to get the lab report about my throat bits today or tomorow, same thing for teh sinus xrays. gah.

I try to get enough sleep. However I often don't.

the problem is i'm such a morning person and such an early riser that even if i DO stay up late, i often can't sleep in the next morning. rarwr.

One night this spring I stayed up very late working on my zine, listening to all my fruvous mp3's. I crashed at 5 am as the birds were starting to sing, . . and then i woke up at 9 and coudln't get back to sleep. i was a weirdo the whole day.

stealthlori Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
now see, that sounds like many of us for five days in late july. well, except for the working on the 'zine and listening to mp3s part.
nate... · 20 years, 7 months ago
far more people suffer from sleep apnea than you know.

I think that's the major cause of non-restful sleep... and, I probably have it too.

stealthlori Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
Steve once did a sleep study, because *I* thought he had apnea. He holds his breath when he's asleep for 30 seconds or so, then exhales with a vengeance. Repeated innumerable times throughout the night, and combined with several unique variations on snoring, not only does this defeat my own attempts to sleep, but it was scaring the hell out of me.

Turns out he doesn't have apnea though. Which is a relief, because he's not going to die from not breathing while asleep and he doesn't need to use an apnea monitor, but I still wish he didn't do all the unexplained weird-noises-while-sleeping stuff. :)
nate... Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
I've actually been falling asleep.. and woken up gasping because I wasn't breathing.
Never woken up FROM a sleep because of that.... but it's definitely happened more than once while I was falling asleep.

Maybe I should get that checked out.
ChrisChin is Getting Old · 20 years, 7 months ago

I never am able to get enough sleep. Experts say that you should get on average 9 hours of sleep a night to be functional and fully rested. I'm lucky if I get 6 hours. Lately, I've been noticing that on work nights I go to bed around 1AM and wake up at 7AM...weekend nights I stay up longer, though I always seem to wake up by 9AM regardless of what time I go to bed. Fortunately, through some freak of nature, I'm able to function on this amount....but am tired all the time andprobably could be more focused if I do get more hours.

I do have occasional bouts of insomnia that keep me up untilungodly hours, giving me about 2-3 hours of sleep. Idid call in sick oncebecause I couldn't fall asleep and it was 7AM and I had just had 2 hours of sleep the night before...so I knew that I would not be functional.

Annika · 20 years, 7 months ago
Sometimes I'll sleep perfectly, the perfect amount of sleep, and feel all great. Then something will happen that stresses me out, and I wont sleep much, and feel all crappy a lot, until it gets better, which is when I sleep far too much.
I have a weird sleep schedule.
George E. Nowik · 20 years, 7 months ago

i've resigned to never getting enough sleep ever again. the sad state of affairs, simply put, decrees that there are too many things to do (both fun and otherwise) to spend the necessary 8-9 hours getting shut eye. as much as i am a fan of sleep and could probably pound even more than the requisite 8-9, i just don't see that happening in the whirlwind that is society. (:

Norg doesn't get enough sleep? Color me shocked and awed. You know. Whatever colors those might be.

I think the boy only gets enough sleep when he's supposed to be somewhere else and accidentally oversleeps. *grin*

George E. Nowik Back · 20 years, 7 months ago

meanie. d:

i think the only time i actually get sleep is when i'm on vacation. which really sucks koz then i have less time to do vacationy things like see people i'm visiting. *gromble*

lawrence · 20 years, 7 months ago
I've spent 9 years of my life asleep. I think that's enough.
Talcott · 20 years, 7 months ago
I tend to sleep almost exactly six hours on weekdays, and a bit more on the weekend. I've heard both that that's plenty, and that's not enough. *shrug* seems to work for me.

I got about that same amount in college, execpt I'd be up until two or three, and get up at eight or nine.

I'm much more of a day person than I'd expect myself to be though, so I don't actually like to sleep in. I'd like to be able to wake up later than 6am, which I must on weekdays, but if I sleep much later than ten on a weekend day, I tend to feel like the entire morning is shot.

Shelly · 20 years, 7 months ago
i don't require a lot of sleep. a good five hours is all i require to function for the normal day in my life, which of late has included at least an hour and a half to 2 1/2 hours overtime and, then, of course, doing stuff afterwards like shopping or watching mooovies or cking email....

but y'all always DID say i was a freak of nature with the no sleeping thing, right? ;_
odoitau · 20 years, 7 months ago
I find that proper hydration helps lots... Well, helps me at least. Too much coffee/pop/caffiene, aside from getting you wired, causes your body to flush its water. I find that if I drink a big glass or two of water before bed, i get a restful sleep and don't sleep in. (That, and the fact that my bladder makes a great supplement to my alarm clock.) If I've been up drinking coffee the night before, it doesn't matter how much sleep I get, I wake up groggy and it takes me a while to get my butt in gear.
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 20 years, 7 months ago
I don't if is just from getting older or if I'm just more relaxed but I sleep so much better than I used do. Till I was in my thirties I'd lie in bed so long before being able to fall asleep. If something woke me up I usually couldn't fall asleep again. Now I usually nod off quickly and can wake up several times in the night and go right back to sleep.
George E. Nowik Back · 20 years, 7 months ago

why am i suddenly really very much looking forward to the 30's.... :D
