Discussion: Alternative, folk(s)y christmas albums please...

The subject says it all. Do you have any suggestions/recommendations for alternative, non-glitzer x-mas CDs?

Here are mine: Loreena McKennitt - A Winter's Garden EP I love this one to pieces.
Lush production.

Darryl Purpose - The Gift Of The Magi His 2002 cover CD. Includes a great C&P cover to boot.

Lisa Bastoni - Underground Christmas album recorded in her living room. This is *the* folky christmas CD.

Aine Minogue - A Celtic Holiday Celebration Harp player extraordinaire. If you love Celtic music this is a must.

(Rose Polenzani - "The same height Christmas" 3-track Bonus CD-R; This one was given away 1 or 2 years ago when your ordered more than 1 item. AFAIK it's not sold seperately )

And then there's the ultra-cool Voices on the Verge I'll be home for x-mas MP3...

Oh my.. you left out the best of the genre: Wonderland. Featuring songs from Peter Mulvey, Richard Shindell, Erin McKeown, Mark Erelli, Dave & Tracy Grammer, N&K Nields, and many other greats. Amazing CD.

Ew. Never heard of that one:( Shame on me...
*adds Wonderland to short list*

The Arrogant Worms Christmas Turkey. :)

Also like Christmas at Home, compilation with artists like Susan Aglukark, Bruce Guthro and Bruce Cockburn.

Bruce Cockburn's Christmas album is terrific, we've been listening to it every year since it came out (maybe 5 years ago?). Usually I stick it in the player with Leon Redbone's Christmas album and that year's Christmas mix CD and hit random.

Bruce Cockburn's Christmas album is one of my favourites.

In general, I love the Arrogant Worms...

...but that particular album has to be one of my least favorite albums of all times. :p

i think i've only heard it once.

i guess that was enough :)

OK, my post isn't here. I left it hours ago. mmm, should I get paranoid? No I'll just post it again.

I second We Three Kings. No one does Christmas like the Roches. They have a second Christmas album with the Caroling Carolllers. It is only available as a Japanese import though. Does anyone else find that amusing?

Christine Lavin has a new Christmas CD, The Runaway Christmas Tree. Check out the link for fun details and MP3s.

Ervin Drake. I can never remember his name. Emily is very funny, I saw her last night. I like her take on all Jewish holidays. "They tried to kill us. We won. Let's eat."
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
i got really into emily at the beginning of the year because of her work on various anime soundtracks--and i didn't find out til later that i actually already knew her from the downtown messiah, black 47 and other bands, and the great space coaster. :)

Winter Solstice Winter Solstice Winter Solstice!!

Okay, so it's not *quite* folky but it has that feel to it. There are like a gazillion albums. Volumes 3, 4 and Reunion are my favorite.

I've really come to enjoy Mistletoe and Wine by the Mediaeval Baebes.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
