So what are your favorite Christmas films?

Some of mine are:
It's a Wonderful Life
A Christmas Story
Scrooge (Alastair Sim version)
A Christmas Carol (Mr. Magoo version)
Meet John Doe.

Does anyone else know Meet John Doe? It is the darkest Christmas film ever. It starts off as light and funny Capracorn but then explores the rise of fascism and how good causes can be corrupted by evil men. I feel the title character's pain to my core.

Ackk I forgot to put "other" on the poll.

Love Rudolph. Love Charlie Brown.

HATE Christmas Story.

Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 6 months ago

A tidbit from the store... this should make you giggle.

To commemorate the 20th anniversary, this year's package of A Christmas Story features a free bobblehead figure (is it Charlie? The annoying kid... I can't remember). Due to poor packaging, most of the bobbleheads are broken... the poor kid's head is rolling around on the opposite side of the box. I giggle every time I see it. I almost bought it, just for the broken bobblehead.

*giggle*

Ack I forgot A Charlie Brown Christmas. I bet it would get votes.

Now that I've said that I am not sure I can be your friend any more; you don't like A Christmas Story and it was written and narrated by Jean Shepherd, a huge influence on me. I'll have to think about this.

Why isn't there an option for Mr Magoo's Christmas Carol?
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
Because I had doubts about anyone other than me loving it. Magoo is the definitive Scrooge.
danced with Lazlo Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
Um, yeah, HI
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
I stand corrected. I always knew you had good taste.

*hearts* gordon.

nothing is better than "kiss saves santa." altho the groovy song at the end of santa claus conquers the martians comes pretty close.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
Is that the Hurray for Sant-ee Claus song?

I actually saw SC Conquers the Martians in the theater. I made my father take me. I thought it was really cool. I am going to hide now.

If you're going to mention Rudolf and Charlie Brown than you need to mention The Year Without a Santa Claus. Most of you likely haven't even seen it since they don't seem to air it on the holidays much which is a shame. It's a little on the weird side and it has some of the *best* musical stop-motion animated production numbers around.

The Miser brothers rock and Mickey Rooney voices Santa. :)
meh Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
Whee! We've got that'n on DVD. It's with like two other specials, I think one of them is Nester The Long-Eared Christmas Donkey, and... well, now I'm drawing a blank on the third.

And ITA -- the Miser brothers are awesome!

There's a holiday-edition tin of cinnimin altoids with Heat Miser on it.

I seem to be watching Meet John Doe right now, they're running it on PBS. Missed the first 5 minutes or so. Since you reccomend it, I'll try to actually pay attention.
jaye · 20 years, 6 months ago
imma watching it right now. the ref. now that's a christmas story i can relate to.

"You know what mom? You know what I'm gonna get you next Christmas? A big wooden cross, so every time you feel unappreciated for all your sacrifices, you can climb up and nail yourself to it."

yup.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
LOVE the Ref. That was way better than I ever expected it to be.

ok, it is really bothering me that gordon had a typo in his own name. ;)
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
actually I've typoed every other time, that IS my real name.
Josh Woodward · 20 years, 6 months ago
We've already determined conclusively that A Christmas Story is the best Christmas film ever. :)
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 6 months ago

Except for the part where it, you know, sucks.

Zach Back · 20 years, 6 months ago

Psht. Christmas Story is superior to all. The end.

Annika Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
I *heart* that movie.
Talcott Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
I love the movie, but I also think it's a bit overrated. It's a fun, cultish, nostalgia flick. It works great a "the family christmas movie", but "It's a Wonderful Life" it's not.

The complete one or the edited one?

There are two of them out there - the edited one should be outlawed!
Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
I just saw the edited one for the first time this year. Edited may be a bit strong, but it is definitely the short version. Thankfully, the friend that loans me the CD has the full version. :-)
K-Lyn · 20 years, 6 months ago

It's all about Bing you insensitive clod...

White Christmas is one of my favorite movies of all time. I will watching it any time of the year and love every moment (with the small exception of the 'snow' song but that's just over done)

And it is the best Christmas song...

Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 6 months ago

This is exactly how I feel about It's A Wonderful Life. When I was in high school, I would watch it every day when I got home. Sure, I was crazy, but I could, "Merry Christmas, Movie House!!" just like Jimmy Stewart.

I maintain that just because it's set at Christmas doesn't make it a Christmas movie. It's an anytime movie, addressing issues that come up at other times of the year.

Oh, and Christmas Story sucks.

100% dainty! Back · 20 years, 6 months ago

I LOVE "It's a Wonderful Life."

I go to school in Jimmy Stewart's birthplace. There's a big statue of him outside the courthouse, and every Christmas they have a huge "it's a wonderful life" parade with christmas lights and all sorts of festivity. It's really cute.

best line in that movie: "well i'm gonna go find the girl and do some passionate neckin"

I also love White Christmas. Bing Crosby is so wonderful. "count your blessings" makes me cry.

Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
White Christmas is actually a remake of Holiday Inn. Has anyone seen that?
jaye Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
i have! recent enough to remember it, too, unlike white christmas, which i must have seen but god knows when.

bits of holiday inn have not aged well.
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
no, they have not. that's why i prefer white christmas.
renita Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
I was actually planning on sayign that.

I like White Christmas, but I like it better as Holiday Inn.
wild bill · 20 years, 6 months ago
best christmas movie ever. the scene where he goes through the toll booth is just classic.

:)

y'know what i mean, vern?
George E. Nowik Back · 20 years, 6 months ago

or how 'bout when he's bringing vern the tree with the backwards moving camera? brilliant.

add that to the list of movies to get. we must see that this holiday season.

I fall for every cheesy christmas movie out there....if it's christmasy and has a classic moral ending or something..I'm there!~Cheeseball!!
Will work for anime · 20 years, 6 months ago

does anyone else remember the Claymation Christmas Special....it was hosted by 2 dinosaurs and they went through a bunch of carols like "Oh Christmas Tree" and the California Rasinssing a version of Rudolph...all while trying to find the true meaning of the word "Wassel" (or however it's spelled. If you can't already tell i watch this at least once every christmas. Please tell me i'm not the only sad case out there!!!

oh yeah and Charlie Brown is my second fav x-mas special

Talcott Back · 20 years, 6 months ago

How dare you forget the new classics including:

The Santa Clause
The Santa Clause 2
Elf

hrm I don't know if I can pick a favourite, it depends on what mood I'm in that day.

but one that I love that's missing is The Bells of St Mary's

renita Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
okay. I'm also fond of National Lampoons Christmas Vacation.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

and. Die Hard is also a "Christmas Movie" of sorts, isn't it?

Mickey's Christmas Carol is classic in my books.

elfy, teacher of many Back · 20 years, 6 months ago

I was just reading this thread, ready to suggest the first 2 Die Hard films and Mickey's. Come to think of it.. it's on tv now!

And, thought it's not a specifically Holiday film, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is up on my list - perhaps because holidays are so strongly associated with candy.

renita Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
well, I guess we just think alike then.

:D

great minds and all that ;->

The Night They Saved Christmas

Which somehow doesn't seem as dated as it should (the over-the-top moral has to do with drilling in the Arctic).

Plus, Santa uses a teleporter!
Starfox · 20 years, 6 months ago
You cannot have this poll and leave out the seminal work of Christmas movie making!!

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation aka The Griswolds Christmas.

dave "buh" Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
well, there's "8 Crazy Nights"...
Mamalissa! · 20 years, 6 months ago

Does "Scrooge (Alastair Sim version)" refer to the classic "A Christmas Carol" movie we saw in school? I always liked that one.

A few years ago, I saw Patrick Stewart's one-man-show of "A Christmas Carol" - for the first couple of minutes, I kept on thinking "Captain Picard! Captain Picard!" But once I got over that, it was really amazing how he transformed into all the different characters - from Scrooge himself down to the Christmas Turkey.

I voted for "Miracle on 34th Street" because there's this one line I love. When asked "how old are you?" Kris Kringle replies "as old as my tongue, and a little older than my teeth."

Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
Tough question. Scrooge was known for years in the US as a Christmas Carol. My guess is that is the one you saw in school but it could have been the earlier Reginald Owen version which really was called A Christmas Carol. My money is on Alastair Sim though.

Anyone see the George C Scott Version? Hey that might have been what you saw in school. I'm not sure when it was made. I think you'd have been older but I'm not sure. It was made for TV and quite good.
Mamalissa! Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
