Favorite Albums Ever

   Discussion: Favorite Albums Ever
Deacon Nailbat · 20 years, 6 months ago

It seems to me that we could go on and on about what bands we don't like and why we don't like them, but how about a thread keeping it totally positive?

What's your favorite album ever, by any band. Something that lifts you up and is good for just about any mood.

For me it's Toad the Wet Sprocket - Dulcinea. I love every song on the album.

Others?

Radiohead: OK Computer.

There are a lot of other standouts. Some that come to mind are Guster's "Lost & Gone Forever", Nick Drake's "Pink Moon", and Peter Mulvey's "Rain". More will come soon, I'm sure. :)

I'm seeing a lot about Guster on this site. I think I'll check out this "Lost and Gone Forever"

Yeah, start with LaGF - I don't think anyone on here would contest that it's their masterpiece. The next album of theirs to get may draw some debate, though. ;-)

Yeah that album just sucks me in and gives me happies for the whole duration. The others are good but don't do the same thing to me.

production-wise, I agree. but I like the songs on Parachute better. I'd love to see them remake that one now.

Mmmm LaGF. thank gooness for discovering Guster not too long ago. We'll be hearing some Guster during jamming at Frucon for sure... :)

I have so many but I guess I still have to say Highway 61 Revisted. Every song is a gem.

One of my favorites for sure. It's in my car right now, in fact :)

I'm also a big fan of The Mountain Goats. You might check them out. Same sort of non-pretentious songwriter vibe that Bob puts out, but very different style.

If I were to pick a Dylan album, I'd probably go with "Blood on the Tracks", but you're right that every song on "Highway 61 Revisited" is good.

Since I don't want to be the one responsible for turning this thread into a Desert Island Discs-type review (just wait.. it'll happen.. someone won't be able to pick just one album, and probably in the next hour :-) ), I'd have to pick as my one and only album...

...gah, this is tough...

...okay. Based on the fact that I didn't want to pick something recent (last ten years, say), and I didn't want to pick something that I've only recently come to enjoy, I'm going to have to go with "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway". Genesis, of course.

Not exactly uplifting, but it was my introduction to the world of concept albums back in my early teens when I was already heavily into the fantasy/sf genres of novels, and introduced such an amazing world, and I found that every time I listened to it I understood a bit more of the story. I've never grown tired of it, either, which is something that's happened with a bunch of the music I was a fan of around then.

Good topic. Picking just one album is damn hard.

See, this is an impossible thing for me. I just can't choose a favorite album ever. It's not even something that varies from minute to minute. I could NEVER pin it down. :) There are plenty of albums I think are stellar from start to finish though:

Beatles - Revolver, Rubber Soul, Abbey Road, Sgt Pepper

Poe - Haunted

Guster - Lost and Gone Forever

Peter Mulvey - Deep Blue, Rapture and all the rest

XTC - Nonsuch, Apple Venus

Geez even this list would get so long. Never mind, I'll stop. :)

Greatest hits albums are considered cheating, right?
Wintress Back · 20 years, 6 months ago
yes.

REO Speedwagon's Hi Infidelity

or

Freda's I know something's going on

My oldest brother was into heavy, hard rock. I used to sneak both of these albums out of his huge 64 cassette tape case. He finally caved and gave them to me. :) I could sing every single song when I was 11. Wrong lyrics and all. ("..you'd better kiss my b'hind...you're taking it on the run baby..")
