   Discussion: songs that reference Toronto
soul groove feline · 19 years, 10 months ago
once again, i request the help of ye fair fruheads in thinking of songs that reference Toronto or stuff in/usually associated with that fine city. I'm making yet another city-specific compilation... this time it's for a friend who will be travelling there very soon.

Congo Toronto - Robert Priest
Spadina Bus - The Shuffle Demons
Toronto Song - Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie
Thoughts on a Rainy Afternoon - Bruce Cockburn (not really *about* Toronto but it's mentioned)
Mitzi's - either the Luke Doucet version or the Veal version (about what Luke considers to be a TO landmark *g*)

Those are the ones that leap to mind...

I don't even know who wrote this song or anything, and it's SUPER dorky, but we sang it in vocal jazz, which . . . . is super dorky in and of itself.

The Old Apartment - BNL

On Yonge Street - Gordon LIghtfoot

Bold Prince Edward Islander - Nancy White

Streets of Toronto - Stompin' Tom
(and I know there are other songs by stompin tom that have to do with toronto I'm sure)

The Toronto star also had an article "50 songs about Toronto" in 2003.

Mamalissa! · 19 years, 10 months ago
How about "My Baby Loves a Bunch of Authors?" It's by this Canadian group you've probably never heard of, but it mentions the Toronto Sun.
angelmusicmaven Back · 19 years, 10 months ago
And of course "Organ Grinder" which references intersections therein.
goovie is married! Back · 19 years, 10 months ago
i was so disappointed when i actually stumbled upon queen and bay and saw no organ grinders *or* monkeys.

They had these really bright lights above the stage at the Rush concert, and when they played that one, the lights came on in a pattern to display "YYZ". It was badass.
stealthlori Back · 19 years, 10 months ago
they misled us all. it's about the corner of queen and bay in OTTAWA.

yep. lotsa monkeys there.

Starfox · 19 years, 10 months ago
but YYZ by Rush references Toronto in the title and the opening notes of the song.
Bender · 19 years, 10 months ago
There's always Underground at Spadina, written by some dork from New Jersey.

Queen and Bay in Toronto is city hall.

I have recently assumed it was some obscure local political metaphor or something. I guess I'm wrong ;P

goovie is married! Back · 19 years, 10 months ago

Bender Back · 19 years, 10 months ago
