Discussion: Which new FHDC feature would you most like to have?

I'll probably do this shameless market research now and then. These are all things that I'm planning to add eventually, and I'm trying to get an idea what to focus on first. Feel free to elaborate on your vote below!

Seeing everybody's dog and cat thumbnails made me think of a virtual budgie dog--sort of a site pet for people whose leases won't allow pets. (Sigh.) Is there anyone who _doesn't_ think this sounds pathetic?
betsy =) · 22 years, 1 month ago
did anyone else read that wrong?
Josh Woodward Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
well, i have been having people ask me to have a coffeemaker module... :-)
Mamalissa! Back · 22 years ago
mmmmm... front page. Have you thought about texture?
A girl named Becca Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
*Waves hand in the air. I definitely read it wrong, like, 3 times. This from the Lit. Studies major....*sigh.... (Apparently the "lit." doesn't stand for "literate"....)
betsy =) Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
im there with ya. i have a degree in english. but i was damn excited about the edible front page. since josh probably can't do that, what about scratch n sniff? i'd like to see a scratch n sniff front page.
Josh Woodward · 22 years, 1 month ago
Someone asked for more info on this one. Instead of a single, two column front page, you get multiple tabbed pages which can have anything you want on 'em. For instance, you could have a new page which has things that you don't actually want on your front page but you might want to see now and then. Or combine with the external news one, and you could have a page with your headlines on it.

That would ROCK!!!! SUCH a good idea....
nate... Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
And yet, I'm the only one to vote for it so far... *sobs*
goovie is married! · 22 years, 1 month ago
forums sound fun. games would be fun if they wouldn't make it even more obvious that i'm not actually working. :) i also still like racermike's idea of travel via frumsg...
Talcott Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
I agree. I was actually rooting for forums when the update came through the first time.

Perosnaly, I think a philosophy forum would be great around here. oooh! And a book forum!

Talcott Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
Games would be cool too though... If we do games, do we get to pick what they are?

Wait.... Josh, can you get ahold of the old BBS Legand of the Red Dragon?

Josh Woodward Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
oh my god.. i used to *love* that game more than life itself. ;-) well, maybe not that much, but LORD was a killer game. i will do my best to make that one happen. i can find the game fairly easily, but i'll need to web-ize it, which could be a chore. we'll see.
ellen, formerly evil Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
I am all about the old BBS games... although I never played that one... my favorite was iNfInItY CoMpLeX *grin*
Joy- new picture! Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
Travel via frumsg! whee!

Games or forums or the karma points would all be fun, though.
Michael (foof) Maki · 22 years, 1 month ago
What, exactly, are User "Karma" Points? Wouldn't that necessitate fora, first?
Josh Woodward Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
You do "good" things on the site, you get points. If you post a message that gets moderated up, you gain karma (and vice versa). That's the classic slashdot system. It might be cool to award karma for things like signing birthday cards, too.
Michael (foof) Maki Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
Ooh! Could you trade these karma points for Rice- A-Roni and other valuable prizes?
iPauley Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
...and thus, the system might be a little less
tolerant of stupid acts by non-regulars who
haven't built up a karma base.

How about stupid acts by regulars? Like, for instance, ohhh.. I dunno, posting the same thing OVER AND OVER? ;)
A girl named Becca Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
Hey, be nice! I'm sure he didn't *mean* to... :P
nate... Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
Right.. hence my winkie face. :)

Something I learned on the SDMB... TRUST THE CGI Most times, even if it seems like the message didn't go through, it did or will.
iPauley Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
The thing is, I only clicked it once. I think
Mozilla might have gone nuts. I will only click
this one once. :)

*laughs* just when i set it to default your post score to an average of your previous post scores. everyone mod up pauley for a few days when you see him to help him out. *grins* in the mean time, i should add a dupe post detector.
A girl named Becca Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
And now we discover why Becca was right not to call herself a geek in the last poll... Mod up=???
Michael (foof) Maki Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
Hit the "thumbs up" icon... It adds points to that user's average...
iPauley Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
specifically, it adds to that post, which ups the
average.

I hate to be the cynical voice here, but I'd be mildly afraid of "ganging up" on one person or another...we have some younger users/newbies that might not understand the system and be modded down before they get a chance. Alternately, it has been known to happen that people get into "tiffs" that spill over into FHDC... I'd be loathe to suggest any consquence to "losing" a lot of karma points (not that this has been suggested), but at the same time I can see it has some similarities to the old moderation system. Just thoughts. I know most of y'all are wonderful and accepting folks. :)
soul groove feline · 22 years, 1 month ago
now I'm afraid to post stuff in fear that it'll get moderated down and I'll lose karma! But...I think it's a great idea. and also the games. yeah.
Josh Woodward Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
that's the point to some extent -- keep people from posting uninteresting stuff. it's one of those things that doesn't really matter on FHDC due to the scale, but for bigger sites it makes all the difference.
Sara Woodward Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
I suppose that means it isn't fair to moderate someone up just because I adore them and they have a picture of our little Grover up, hmm? :-(
Eri · 22 years, 1 month ago
How are y'all getting default thumbnail images with posts? I haven't found the right spot to click to do that, yet...
Michael (foof) Maki Back · 22 years, 1 month ago
It's on the "What's New" page over

<-----

there

trunger is counting... · 22 years, 1 month ago
I almost voted for the first one but it said "editable" and not "edible". Much sadness. Trunger hungry. Go forage now. Find games play, too. English bad.
