Discussion: How do you eat your marshmallow peeps?

I've never had the First Post before!!!  I rule!

I chose Other.  Because I like to toast my peeps over a campfire first, and then it's hard to tell which part is which.

Whoo-hoo.  The bunnies are just right when their ears start to go wobbly.
(And that sugar coating makes s'mores even more... uhm... s'moreful.)

That's because you Rule Melissa!  You always are the first to post in my book!

Unless they are in spread form. With peanut butter. Or s'mored between two graham crackers and a chocolate bar. Or in case they're Fluffy Puff.

Oh, but the best of all is killing peeps. One easter I was at my friend's house and we played "Let's see how many ways we can make peeps die!"

We smooshed them with a car, blew them up in the microwave, chopped them into eesty beesty pieces... it was a blast.

On a side bar, the peep never actually blew up... it just expanded. :o(

Maybe it's a part of retail... Peeps are available for every holiday and they're the same Peeps!  Maybe if Peeps didn't look so stale, or if they actually looked good.  The only good thing about Peeps is that they make great endcap displays.  They're eyecatching, colorful, and you'll never run out.
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 17 years, 4 months ago
I've never eaten a peep. My only experience with them is seeing the one that Bernie put in the latticework at the Birchmere and that was still there a year later.
lawrence Back · 17 years, 4 months ago
yeah. sadly, they've discovered it and removed it since then.

that just ruined my whole day.

Mine too. That couldn't happen in NYC, we have a preservation of landmarks law!
danced with Lazlo · 17 years, 4 months ago
I put other... cause Peeps aren't kosher you insensitive clod!
lawrence Back · 17 years, 4 months ago
could they be made kosher, though? or is there some specifically non-kosher ingredient in them?
Andrea Krause Back · 17 years, 4 months ago
I think there's gelatin in marshmallows. And gelatin is not kosher, right? Or am I on crack?
dirty life & times Back · 17 years, 4 months ago
right. that's why i've never eaten a peep either.
danced with Lazlo Back · 17 years, 4 months ago
right... but there is such a thing as kosher gelatin and there is such a thing as kosher marshmallows.
nate... Back · 17 years, 4 months ago
Is it true that kosher jews taste better?
danced with Lazlo Back · 17 years, 4 months ago
You mean Jews who keep kosher?

Because human flesh isn't kosher no matter what you do to it.

In the words of my cousin "Peeps are Wrong"! Nothing like sugar coated sugar! It is like the concept of batter fried cheese, which also bothers me!!
*joolee* · 17 years, 4 months ago

It's so sad that when I saw  "marshmallow peeps" I thought : Marshmallow people?  Cool!

But I'm not _that_ slow, I did catch on right after kicking myself.  >_<

Rachel Beck · 17 years, 4 months ago
There is such thing as kosher gelatin. Dannon puts it in its blended yogurts around Passover time. I called the 1-800 number on the back of the yogurt container to find out what exactly kosher gelatin was (Gella-- isn't there something about not eating the flesh of an animal and the milk of its mother in the same meal?). The answer I got was that specially blessed cow bones were slow-boiled until they released a gelatinous material. But the customer service person could have just made that up. Anyway, if she's right, gelatin can be kosher (if so marked on packaging) but not vegetarian.

Manufacturers could make marshmallows with cornstarch, or seaweed, or pectin. But I'd still make rice krispie bars before eating peeps.

[My mom eats the heads first, but she lets 'em get good and stale. Eww.]
Bender Back · 17 years, 4 months ago
actually, there are kinds of gelatin that are made from kelp.  one of my crazy-go-nuts green party acquaintances told me about it.
danced with Lazlo Back · 17 years, 4 months ago
blessed cow bones? That lady was on crack.

Yes, one is not supposed to eat milk and meat together because of the bit in the Torah that says not to seethe a kid in its mother's milk. It's a broad interpretation that has become the rabbinic law. So even if the gelatin was made from the bones of a kosher animal, if it was then mixed with a milk product the whole thing is moot.

Kosher gelatin is almost always vegetarian and, as Leah said, made of kelp. The problems with regular gelatin are that they come from animals in the first place and that gelatin is then often mixed with milk products, and further that they are made from non-kosher animals, either from pigs or horses or from a kosher animal like a cow which is not slaughtered and prepared in a kosher manner.

And for the umteenth time (not to you Rachel, but in general...) you don't bless something and make it kosher. There's a whole process of ritual slaughter and draining of blood and salting... that is what makes meat kosher... not a blessing. Besides, Jews don't really bless things anyway. When we say a blessing we say that something is blessed... as in it is already blessed before we got to it and we are acknowledging its blessedness... and usually what we are saying is blessed is God... and I'm pretty sure we don't have the power to bless God. Like, when we say a blessing over bread, we don't say that the bread is blessed, but rather blessed is God master of everything who brings forth bread from the Earth.

Ok, I'm done.

We who do not know these things appreciate you explaining it to us, and are sorry if explaining the same thing over and over frustrates you. We feel your pain. Honest.

(On a side note, one of the reasons I have always thought I should have gone into teaching is because I don't mind explaining the same thing over and over....not to the same idiot...err...person maybe, but well ya'know. *sigh* ...another calling missed *grin*)

danced with Lazlo Back · 17 years, 4 months ago
oh, its not that I mind... I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a little frustrating, cause i know that no matter how many people i explain it to, the majority of people in the world will probably for a long time to come think that the only thing that makes food kosher is its being blessed, which is probably a lot easier to dismiss as silly or petty (which I've often been accused of for keeping kosher) than a painless slaughter and the prohibition against consuming blood...

But no, I don't really mind it. It's just kind of funny that it seems the place I end up talking about it the most is FHDC.
nate... Back · 17 years, 4 months ago
So basically... as long as they bless something, it's kosher?

actually i've never eaten them. the one time i did find some, i was on a hardcore-veggie streak and was completely anti-gelatine. so i sent them to justine and siobhan instead. :D i haven't seen them in the shops since. :P
ChrisChin is Getting Old Back · 17 years, 4 months ago
well, if you want I can buy a package of peeps when they come by around Easter so you can try them during Falcon Ridge, when they will be all nice and stale. Do you prefer chicks or bunnies? :)  Actually, they also have patriotic peeps around the 4th of July now..so you could try them when they're fresh too.  Oh boy, you just gotta love mass marketing and commercialism for all seasons. Whoopie!!
emilie is CRANKY Back · 17 years, 4 months ago
heeee! i'll have a rummage for them in the shops and stuff, but if i can't find any i'll let you know. you can be my official bringer of peeps at frff 2004. :)

for anyone who's interested in seeing Josh's marshmallow  peep collection:

http://www.joshw.org/d/734.html

i've since started a collection, but it's nowhere near as robust as josh's yet. half of these peeps are unfindable in Canada.
i don't eat the stuff, though. just collect it. food is nice to look at, not to eat.

I eat my peeps stale.
:)
zil · 17 years, 4 months ago
I only eat peeps when I want to die or go blind or... when I just feel uber self hateination.
Annika · 17 years, 4 months ago
I have the same problem with peeps that I do with candy corn.  When I was 9 I ate almost an entire giant bag of candy corn, and od'd on them.  My mom sends us easter baskets every year, and every year she put in a couple boxes of the chick's, and bunnies.  When you live on your own, and have a shit job, and not much food,  and no money for sweet sweet extra's those kinds of baskets come in handy,  but dude..  Never try to make a meal out of it.  It's just too much.
