Yes you do. You didn't mention the great theme song by Fame's Mr Scharofsky, Albert Hague. Slaid Cleaves does the best version of it ever featuring the classic accordion solo by Oliver Steck.
John J. Ryan · 21 years, 8 months ago
Some people will probably want to mention It's A Wonderful Life.

A Charlie Brown Christmas has to be a classic (Is it considered a movie?)

Scrooged is Bill Murray at his finest.

Die Hard can also be called a Christmas film, sort of.

Home Alone is also a sort of Christmas film.

Jingle All The Way is a laugh riot.
nate... Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
Ooo.... yeah, Scrooged is an excellent flick.

hands down. I love that movie.

I'm also fond of Miracle on 34th St.
John J. Ryan Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
I forgot to mention that film in my "Others" list. The remake of that film featured the Rutgers Marching band one year before I joined. They had to do a mock Macy's parade, and they needed a marching band. They also had an extra put on a Rutgers band uniform in order to shoot a shot of him ducking out of the way of a flying cymbal. Great shot!

Rutgers usually gets those calls for any New York shoot (I got called once for a David Letterman bit, his own Thanksgiving Parade starting a random cabbie)

I also remember a wonderfilm film called Gift Of The Magi. Cute little film about a married couple who go to extremes to buy each other gifts, and it ends up because of the extremes they go to, the gifts they get for each other become irrelevant. Truly a film that defines the term "It's the thought that counts."

My cousin was an extra in that movie. In one of the crowd scenes near the end, look for a white Persian cat with a blue outfiit--that's Lisa.

As much as I love the George C. Scott "Christmas Carol," "The Christmas Story," and the abovementioned Drew Barrymore vehicle, I would have to vote for "It's a Wonderful Life." It's not nearly the nostalgia trip it's sometimes considered to be: The lead character jumps off a bridge, for Pete's sake, evil goes unpunished, and the Depression is still on at the end of the movie. But love and neighborliness might be enough for today. Pretty cool.

My favorite was always A Claymation Christmas, with the California Raisins, and hippos ice skating to "Angels We Have Heard on High"

Oh, and the two dinosaurs arguing about what "Here We Come a Wassailing" is about. Heh.

I was torn between A Christmas Story and Rudolph claymation 1964 thing (mainly because it's one of the earliest childhood memories).

Problem is, they are all just so dang good. Although I absolutely detest It's a Wonderful Life. Not because it's a bad film, but because it gets beaten to death every Christmas.
John J. Ryan Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
Not since NBC bought the exclusive rights to it. Now instead of it being shown about 50 bazillion times during the holidays, it is only shown once, as per NBC "tradition". At least until the next tradition comes along.
Starfox Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
Oh cool. That's good to hear. Now maybe I can start enjoying it again. I don't mind a movie being played once every year. But having it on every single broadcast station at once like it was a few years ago, that was just intolerable. :)
Michael (foof) Maki Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
I've never understood complaining about this. I mean, you do realize that you can change the channels on your television, right? This is an awfully odd stand for a professed libertarian to take.

I miss It's a Wonderful Life being on TV all the time. I prolly only watched it twice all the way through per season, but I'd witch bits and pieces a million times. Plus, if ever I was bored during the holiday season, I could watch it.
Starfox Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
"I've never understood complaining about this. I mean, you do realize that you can change the channels on your television, right? This is an awfully odd stand for a professed libertarian to take."

What? I can't complain about something I find annoying just because I'm a libertarian? Notice I do not say they should be FORCED to not show it. And NBC buying exclusive rights to it is not FORCING anyone not to show it. NBC bought an investment because they thought it would equal ratings and equal $$$.

I also don't like SUVs and bitch about them, but doesn't mean it's not a libertarian viewpoint.

Back when I only had broadcast TV and it was on 6 out of 9 stations I could get, yes it was quite annoying. Especially when the other three channels were a spanish channel, a sports channel, and a local station that sucked ass.

Gordondon son of Ethelred · 21 years, 8 months ago
You forgot to mention the only Christmas Movie to make the list of top ten films of all time and I think the only one to make the AFI top 100 films of the Century. It's A Wonderful Life is a perfect film. People tend to think of it as syrupy but large parts of it work as Film Noir. It deals with a man's feeling of isolation from the rest of the world and the idea that he is a total failure. The ending is not about his overcoming all his problems it's about realizing what he already had.

I hate that I didn't vote for A Christmas Story. I'm a huge Jean Shepherd fan and had been for years before the film was made. It's an amazing story which translates into being a great film.

I picked White Christmas. This may be largely influenced by the fact that I watched it last night. MmmmBing. Muppets always rock as well. And I love Miracle on 34th Street. And Scrooged. And even The Santa Clause.

HATE A Christmas Story though. I don't know why...I've just always despised it and have felt like a freak because of it. Seems everyone else adores it. :)
I can see the bunny Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
Anything with Bing Crosby also gets my vote! Also a big fan of the Bells of St. Mary's (not strictly a Christmas film but they always show it). :)
Livin' in Seattle Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
I picked White Christmas as well, but only because Holiday Inn was not an option...Holiday Inn is another Bing (and Fred Astaire!) vehicle, and the film that actually debuted the song White Christmas.
Shelly Back · 21 years, 8 months ago
weighing in here regarding my FAVE movie genre~the Christmas/holiday variety!!!!!

i voted for other coz i'd say that though i LOVE white christmas, i love holiday inn. bing...fred...what more could you ask for???!!!

also the bells of st mary's is one of my faves...and its predecesor, going my way{which i nabbed last yr in the bing crosby disco-double-pack with holiday inn!!!} going my way is GREAT!!!! think sister act II, but with bing in the whoopi role...sorta.... GREAT MOVIE...heartwarming -and- funny.

another good yet semi-depressingish-makes-me-cry-every-time is fred macmurray in 'miracle of the bells'. rent it. ESPECIALLY ifffin you like old movies.

under the animated type of this movie/special i feel i should also mention my 2 FAVORITE specials, 'the year wihtout a santa claus' and 'nestor the long eared Christmas donkey'{which luckily and ironically is included on the YWASC dvd!!} i have watched nestor twiice this year already and am lending it to a friend at work coz i was telling him about it.

also, santa claus is comin to town is great. and ya for the shout out for 'emmet'!!!! o/' bar-be-que! well, bless my spi-rit, i swear it nev-er fails o/' tee hee.

and...Christmas eve on sesame street??? like, hi!!! cookie monster is -heavily- featured. again, what more could you want for your holiday season???!!

heh..i could go on forver, but alas, i hafta shop coz we're having a decorate your cubbies/rows/sections contest with a winter wonderland theme and i must rise to the challenge. silly fools...they know not whom they're dealing with!{heh..i already ironically had my stuffed 'bumble' from rudolph up there on my ledge for decoration!!}

I voted for a Christmas Story - I saw a bit of it this weekend, when he's helping his dad change the tire and says "Fudge!" - only that's not what he says.

And Charlie Brown's Christmas special is the classic - the new Peanuts shorts they played afterwards last night just didn't do it for me.

But the Yule Log - now that's got everything. Plot, character development, cinematography, social commentary, everthing.
Agent Scully Back · 21 years, 8 months ago

"heheheheheheh...she said YULE."

I have 4 hours taped of the Yule Log from WPIX in 1986 when we first got our VCR.

I love getting cozy next to the TV and sitting in front of the fire...on the TV...*sigh*

"Clark Griswold: Where do you think you're going? Nobody's leaving. Nobody's walking out on this fun, old-fashioned family Christmas. No, no! We're all in this together. This is a full-blown, four-alarm holiday emergency here! We're gonna press on, and we're gonna have the hap, hap, happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny f*cking Kaye!
