hey, y'all. dj folky beth in da house. </cool>

i'm working on the promos for my new radio show, and i need help. show format is singer-songwriter and contemp folk/alt-folk/folk rock (take your pick).

i wanted to try to do a promo that's a montage of lines from songs that have the word "guitar"... ie, "my guitar is love, my guitar's all i need" from "my guitar" by ben lee, or "i sold my computer for a used acoustic guitar" from this town is wrong by the nields. any other lines you can think of?

show details for those who care:
"acoustic pickups"
sundays, 4-5pm
www.wunh.org
(better quality stream at http://yohnson.net:8000/listen.pls)
starting january 21

i'm also hoping to archive the shows somewhere.

so HELP!!! :) lyrics, anyone? THANKS! :)

While My Guitar Gently Weeps - The Beatles
The Guitar - TMBG
Worse Comes To Worse - Billy Joel "I do my writing on my road guitar"
Thunder Road - Bruce Springsteen "Well I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk"
Summer of 69 - Bryan Adams - "I got my first real 6-string"

muchos gracias. perhaps i should specify a bit further, however. the station format is very independent/underground/small label oriented. i guess i could say "think frff-caliber artists." does that make sense?

thanks to john for getting the ball rolling, however. *hugs* :)
John J. Ryan Back · 21 years, 7 months ago
Now you're getting more difficult with the FRFF-friendly artists.... Although I still think TMBG would qualify...

Stephen Fearing has a song with the word guitar in it, perhaps Leanne can shed light on that subject.

That's all I can think of. Hopefully more help is on the way....

Heehee - why yes John, I could help with that. ;) Stephen Fearing has a song called 'The Life' that is all about making his living with his guitar -- "Pulling songs from a guitar dark with nicotine and time, and a sunburst top that sets against the evening" also has .. "so you pick up your guitar and play it for yourself, these days you only play it seems for everybody else"

Also - Susan Werner's 'Blue Guitar' from New Non-fiction

i'm not sure if you're palying covers, but Rufus Wainwright (not indie enough? the diet coke of indie?) covers "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." I think it's on the I an Sam soundtrack.
John J. Ryan Back · 21 years, 7 months ago
Rufus covers Across The Universe on that album actually. However, Jimmy LaFave's cover of While My Guitar on Friday night at FRFF was a musical highlight, and I wasn't even at the main stage, I heard it from the Budgiedome. I had to run out of there and here it for myself. Same thing with Rhonda Vincent and The Rage doing "Down To The River To Pray" all surrounding one microphone.

yup.. sorry. i had a brain fart & failed to check my playlist before posting. bad Snow. bad evil Snow. i'll go back to not posting anything useful again (still?)

well, if the Beatles, Jump Little Children, or They Might Be Giants fit your format, I could think of three songs...
John J. Ryan Back · 21 years, 7 months ago
Beatles do not, TMBG might, J,LC definitely.

isn't there some Matheson guy from the Toronto area who, on his album, has a song about diggin' girls with guitars? :) mumble mumble "mental for a sister who strums"

and "service" by Mad Pudding includes the lyrics "when I was twenty-one (play guitar, play guitar) into having my own fun (play guitar, play guitar)" -Service (from 'dirt and stone' album) has a female lead vocal. Mad Pudding is in the same category of folk as the Paperboys.

Hope I'm helpful.

that Matheson guy...doesn't he look a lot like the guy who used to be king of some European/Mediterranean country?
John J. Ryan Back · 21 years, 7 months ago
Doesn't he also not even like the Beatles with the long, long hair?
Mamalissa! Back · 21 years, 7 months ago
HEY!

Not the Beatles.

Not even Pete Best.

Cheryl Wheeler's Mrs Pinocci's Guitar.

The Nields have the best line. Somebody help me with the song title, Something Town. " I traded my computer for a used acoustic guitar." I'm sure I screwed up the lyrics too.

Slaid Cleaves: The Dad Song on for the Brave and free.
I don't know why I like to play guitar
Driving round the country form bar to bar
I'm just living the dream that I've always had.
I guess I must've got it from my dad
You see my daddy bought a Gibson,
I was one year old
I'd listen to the songs and the stories he told
I picked up that guitar when I was just a lad
I guess I must've got it from my dad.

There are some great line's in Dan Bern's "Talking Alien Abduction Blues."

I'll, keep an ear out for more.

"This Town Is Wrong." The lyrics are, "I sold my computer for a used acoustic guitar."
I love the dad song. I didn't realize it was available on CD.

You'll have to get it when you see Slaid in February. It has one of those young Slaid, "Hi I'm a rock star" cover pics.

I Bought A Flat Guitar Tutor - Ten CC (this is off the album "Deceptive Bends" and it's great! - and really short)

"I bought a flat (Ab)
Diminished responsibility
You're de ninth person to see (C)
To be suspended (B sus)in a seventh (A7)
Major catastrophe
It's a minor point but gee (G)
Augmented by the sharpness of your
See (C) what I'm going through

Hope this helps :-D

Martin Sexton's "Glory Bound" -- "ain't nothin but this pipe dream and my guitar/living off of apple fields and old cigars"
There are versions on THE AMERICAN and BLACK SHEEP, the latter being the acoustic folk version of the song.
Go Marty!!
