A MILLION dollars!

   Discussion: A MILLION dollars!
nate... · 21 years ago
So, we were discussing this in another forum I'm in...

If you had a million dollars, and had to spend it in a week... no investing.. just purely on material things...

What would you buy?

lawrence Back · 21 years ago
I would buy you a monkey. Haven't you always wanted a monKEY?
Andrea Krause Back · 21 years ago
A house. Two new cars. Big swanky TVs, the ones that go on the wall. A party for my friends, including airfare for those far away. Accessories to make a dream kitchen in said house. Mmmmhugefridge. Debt payment (that's not investing, is it?). A wedding.
John J. Ryan Back · 21 years ago
An exotic pet. Like a llama. Or an emu!
John J. Ryan Back · 21 years ago

But seriously folks:

A new house, new car, student loans paid off, a recording studio with the works, getting people to FRFF and Frucon, and enough money to allow my folks to retire right this second.

Brian Dinsky Back · 21 years ago
mmm, you said FRFF
nate... Back · 21 years ago
After paying off debt, I would build a house to my specs (kitchen especially), and buy a car and a boat.

That would pretty much use it up.
:)
ChrisChin is Getting Old Back · 21 years ago
Um...A boat!...uh, uh...and a Pony! :)
Back · 21 years ago

seems like student loans/debt is a common theme with us! heh!

yeah, I'd.....

1) pay off all debts

2) get a dog (doesn't have to be an expensive one, but I really like the one from Fraiser) :D

3) buy a log home on a lake

4) build a recording studio in my new home

5) buy a boat for my dad

6) buy a nice home for my mother in law

7) buy a REALLY cool tour bus

8) adopt a kid or two

9) go on a REAL honeymoon! (or at least buy the tickets that week)

10) buy a guitar store for Rod

(Rod says he'd spend half on shares in the coors light company, and the other half buying chineese food gift certificates) smart boy!
ChrisChin is Getting Old Back · 21 years ago
Hmm...a million dollars? Well, after paying off my student loans, I would buy myself a car, an apartment somewhere in BrooklynorQueens, and then if I had enough money leftover, a computer, a new PDA, aparking space, andone of those really big-ass TVs with a home theater system and then a bunch of pet supplies cause then I would adopt a cat.
Starfox Back · 21 years ago
Pay off my house, my fiance's student loans, her car, and practically every other form of debt. I would then give my parents a nice trip to anywhere they wanted, and the rest would be donated to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, or doesn't that count?
tygerlillie Back · 21 years ago
of course that counts! St Judes is an amazing place some of my sorority sisters and i are going down in july. It is our international charity, infact Epsilon Sigma Alpha (my sorority) Indiana raised 100,000 dollars plus for St. Jude and that excudes any raidothons. it was a good year. SO yes that is awesome!
Starfox Back · 21 years ago
Well, they did say material things...:)

And I quite agree. I visited St. Jude's a couple years ago and was very impressed. I'm also impressed that 94% of their funding comes from private donations. The only government funding they get is whatever research grants the doctors get on their own. They are dedicated to remaining a private charity and they get my vote of support and dollars with no problem.

They also freely share the results of their research, so the whole world ends up benefitting from them.
lawrence Back · 21 years ago
seriously speaking, though...

house (down payment only): $600k
furniture for my house: $150k
entertainment center: $20k
musical instruments and equipment: $50k
two dedicated web/mail servers w/rack/kvm: $10k
new desktop computer + nice desk for it: $10k (including the 23 inch flat panel monitor)
new laptop plus iPod: $4k
my entire amazon.com wishlist: $1k
Jaguar S-type: $50k
grad school: $90k
getting people to Falcon Ridge: $15k

nate... Back · 21 years ago
150K on furniture?

Christ, man, what are you buying?
Andrea Krause Back · 21 years ago
I dunno, it adds up, especially if you're going to furnish a 600k house.
lawrence Back · 21 years ago
$800k, actually. I can afford around $200k already. :)

but yeah, it does add up. I think I figured that a lot of nice furniture would be expensive - it cost me around $3k just to furnish my 800 square foot apartment with relatively cheap stuff, and it's fairly incomplete, too. I still could use another bookcase or two, a coffee table, some more seating.... well, if I had the space.

maybe I considered "art" and "books" and "plants" to be furniture when I made the estimate. :)

I'd buy a million dollar bills.

nate... Back · 21 years ago
Wiseass.
:D
A girl named Becca Back · 21 years ago
How about, like, savings bonds? Could we buy those?
John J. Ryan Back · 21 years ago

* puts my pinky finger to my closedmouth *

Annika Back · 21 years ago
I would split it with family members and close friends, pay off bills, and buy a big truck, because driving a big truck is wonderful, you're all big and powerful and able to run over everything and.. it's neat!! But not like a big, "hey check out my penis" truck, but like a big nice, not all mean looking truck. Yeh.. and like.. shoes or something, socks, find a floppy lilac chef's hat. I should have run out of money at that point.
Zach Back · 21 years ago
First, I would take the burden of my college education off of my parents' shoulders. Then, I would travel around with my dearest friends Eric, Paula, and my girly girl Sarah. I could go to Europe, travel with my friends. I'd actually make it to FRFF and several other concerts (Radiohead specifically). I would buy a large plot of land and make it a nature preserve. There are many little things I would do that seem inconsequential, but I'm a poor little white suburbanite and they mean a lot to me.
Janos Back · 21 years ago
Hmm that's a tough one. I'd buy a DVD player, a better TV, a better computer and a high-speed internet connection, all those DVD's that I've wanted to get if I had a DVD player, umm I'd probably travel a lot of places. I'd still have a lot left though, wouldn't I? Well, I'd probably have to give the rest away to charity if I'm not allowed to keep it ;) Of course, I'd keep enough to pay for rent and all that stuff. I'd be all set! :)
siobhan's a londoner · 21 years ago

I got 500 english pounds and spent it on/am spending it on

a pc as i have not got one

a tent

food(eventually)

I got itin a windfall but my mum has it at the moment which means I am still impoverished but no-one is trying to make me a hooker anymore which is just as well asI do not want to be one

emilie is CRANKY Back · 21 years ago

five hundred english pounds? ...oh, i see, that's a million dollars CANADIAN. ;)

zil · 21 years ago

I think I'd ....

pay off my student loans.

pay off the hospital.

have my father, grandfather, uncle and the other nameless bad man from the thing and the stuff- beaten to a bloody pulp. I'm not usually one for violence or vengance, but to these couple people (add sam G to the list he raped a friend of mine) I would wish pain. yes, I know. bad.

visit all my fruloves

see a really good specialist about my many illnesses...

buy new needles

buy a house with good afternoon sun windows

get art stuffs

and give the rest away... prolly to the humane society. or maybe some to my first grade teacher to get her horrible freaking hairy facial mole removed, because I KNOW she still has it. ;-)

Laura P. · 21 years ago

1) Rid self of all debt (student loans and credit card)

2) Buy a house with a fair amount of land and some animals to live on it.

It's really hard to think of a million dollars worth of stuff. If you said a thousand dollars, I would know exactly what to do with it. (Like get a new bedroom set and a sewing machine). But for with a million, I'd have to buy a whole new house, not just a bed, and that's a lot harder to think about, if that makes any sense.

Ilmater · 21 years ago

If I had a million dollars I would do one of the following:

  • I would spend half to make a better mousetrap and the other half to genetically construct a craftier mouse
  • Give every American a 1/2 cent tax cut!
  • Buy a 17 second Superbowl commercial in which I would list the things I would spend it on if I hadn't blown all the money on the commercial
  • Buy you a fur coat (but not a real fur coat. That's cruel).
