   Discussion: Deli Meat!
Nik Chaikin · 20 years, 7 months ago
Mine is pastrami, whats yours? Keep in mind i will kill anybody who says pastrami on white bread with mayo. you have a right to your opinion, but i'm jewish and we have certain standards of deli meat conduct.
sheryls Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
hahaha - my sister put corned beef on white with mayo. she's just a half sister though, and isn't jewish. it's evil! evil. pastrami and corned beef belong on rye, challah or bagels. with mustard. mm.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 7 months ago

is a baguette acceptable??

danced with Lazlo Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
I like just about anything so long as it's kosher.

And with a side of kishka.

And a cel-ray.
Mamalissa! Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
mmmmm. kishka.
ChrisChin is Getting Old Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
mmmm....Cel-Ray! it's soo yummy (once you get over the fact that you're drinking celery soda).
Janos Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
Looks like I'm the only one who likes bologna... lol.
sheryls · 20 years, 7 months ago

i'm crazy about extra lean corned beef! on an onion bagel. with swiss. and brown mustard. i think i could eat those every meal.

well, maybe not every meal. but. close :)

Mamalissa! · 20 years, 7 months ago
That's it...I have to go for deli. Corned Beef on rye with musard, a square (fried) potato knish, a cream soda, and a sour pickle.

I love New York.
Mamalissa! Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
I'm back from Mr. Broadway. No square knishes, so I got a round one. But everything else is going as planned. So far, the pickle was delicious!
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 20 years, 7 months ago
I voted for Pastrami but only at Katz's deli. their's is so good it is almost counts as a different food. Most other places I'll take the tongue. Knobblewurst is way up there too.
Sarah THE chicken · 20 years, 7 months ago
Dammit, now you've made me hungry! I'm gonna have to go buy a sandwich now...You all suck!
jaye Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
me too. mmmmm. sammich. maybe i should go to honeyhole for lunch.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 7 months ago

nate... Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
well, what do you expect when you start talking about your honeyhole?

*bwaaahahahahah*

jaye Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
did i say my? i did not say my.

i am not that flexible

sammiches by day, liquor by night.
nate... Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
i am not that flexible

*snorts soda out nose*
jaye Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
*takes a victory lap*
nate... Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
Was that pun intentional??

:D
jaye Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
as always

*cough*
renita · 20 years, 7 months ago
in canada prosciutto or honey maple turkey, normally.

or here, I'm all the black sausage. it's something else.
and the black forest ham is really good too. considering I'm living in one of the biggest cities in the black forest area ;D

oh. but really. why make me choose?

I mean, there's liverwurst, and kirsch salami, and parm. salami, and speck. and smoked turkey and and all the sausages.

it's all so. good.
Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 7 months ago

Honey maple turkey? Why isn't this available in the US?

renita Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
because we keep it from you.

we're a greedy greedy people and we hoarde all the good food.

just imagine the stuff I HAVEN'T told you about.

ChrisChin is Getting Old Back · 20 years, 7 months ago

Boar's Head makes a very yummy maple glazed honey turkey that I frequently use to make sandwiches for work lunches. It's my favorite type of turkey...though I prefer havingroast beast, especially the semi rare kind...so tasty.

Bruce Rose Back · 20 years, 7 months ago

I've been using "cajun turkey" quite a bit lately (it's in quotes because I've never seen anything cajun (or creole, for that matter) that used turkey). I haven't seen the Boar's Head maple glazed yet, but I'm going shopping for it tomorrow. Thanks for the tip!

The Canadians can't hoarde the good food forever! *grin*

sheryls Back · 20 years, 7 months ago

i saw cajun turkey. also, Giant Eagle has Buffalo Wing Sauce Chicken deli meat. delish. :)

i love lemon pepper turkey. i think that's my favorite.

and i got this really rare, lean roast beef last night, had it on 7 grain wheat with swiss, medium cheddar and Stadium Mustard. i wish i ciould remember the brand of the roast beef. mmm.

renita Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
mmm buffalo Wing Sauce chicken meat...

lemon pepper just about anything is good ;D
stealthlori Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
Boar's Head brand rocks with everything I've tried of theirs. Honey maple turkey, cajun turkey, Southwest turkey, assorted roast beasts, black forest ham ...

Right now I'm going to go eat homestyle turkey with melted gouda and mustard on crispbread. yep yep.
Yvonne · 20 years, 7 months ago

I don't eat meat, you insensitive clod! :P

nate... Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
Well, nobody's perfect.

:)

Yvonne Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
Do you mean the person who submitted the poll or me? :P
nate... Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
guess... ;)
Yvonne Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
No thanks. :P
nate... Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
you're welcome. O:-)
Annika · 20 years, 7 months ago
Used to love pastrami *drool*, Now I don't eat meat, you insensitive clod.
Kat Kunz · 20 years, 7 months ago

geez! i thought *everyone* loved turkey. well, *i* do, anyway... especially peppered turkey. or smoked, or honey-glazed, or lemon peppered, or hot with swiss cheese... yum. :D

Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 7 months ago

Love honey turkey. and honey ham. but I just had to vote for salami because it's like an addiction. :)

Annika Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
I never liked turkey. I couldn't get past the smell.
Sarah THE chicken Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
Yeah, it's the smell! Cooking turkey is Gross!!! Bleh
renita Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
well I love turkey, kat.
sll those you mentioned and more.

apparently we have more similar tastes than we knew of.

two, in fact, in one day have just appeared.

imagine that.
Kat Kunz Back · 20 years, 7 months ago

yay for turkey!

*looks around*

turkey, and, um... stollen? or sauerkraut? or spaetzel? i'm at a loss. :D (i'm also mad sleepy, which might be a contributing factor. *yawn*)

renita Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
sorry--I was being sneaky.

I was trying to track down the name of an NES game I used to play.

With the help of George, I've come to the conclusion that it was probably Star Tropic.

Best. Game. Ever. :)

the discussion was on the wall... so you should be able to find it if you want.
George E. Nowik Back · 20 years, 7 months ago

oh. yum.

peppered turkey.

want now.

yes.

Carando makes a rosemary-encrusted ham that's really good. It's real ham, too, not those chopped and formed water-added square loaves.

When I used to do my grandfather's grocery shopping, the worst part was the deli. 1/4 pound low-salt this, that, and the other thing, plus did the clerks think that *I* actually ate P&P loaf or head cheese? Yuck.

Actually, the worst part of his shopping was buying the double-enema packs and cases of Ensure at Wal*Mart.

sheryls Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
from rosemary-encrusted ham to enemas in 301 characters. nice.
Adam Hartfield Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
It really is a gift.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
Dude. I don't want ham OR enemas as a gift. Can I have jewelry instead?
Adam Hartfield Back · 20 years, 7 months ago

I suppose, but I was talking about more how I am gifted rather than how I gift.

*gets Andrea a gigantic owl brooch made from topaz, turquoise, and peridot*

*horfs*

Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
Um. Dude. Can I change my mind and take the ham instead?
Mamalissa! Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
It's better than a gigantic enema made from topaz, turquoise, and peridot...
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 7 months ago

that would be a pain in the facet

Mamalissa! Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
Do you really think this is the right setting for that kind of language?
stealthlori Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
I'll take the brooch off your hands, since Andrea doesn't want it. I know someone for whom it would be the perfect gift.

Adam Hartfield Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
Too bad it only exists in my imagination, then! But I could easily picture my late grandmother wearing such a monstrosity.
stealthlori Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
I can't see anyone wearing it, but I can imagine peals of disbelieving laughter.

(It's a longstanding Twin Peaks joke run amok between my auntie and me.)
K-Lyn · 20 years, 7 months ago

Now I have Wierd Al's My Bologna earwormed...even though no one has voted for it, yet.

danced with Lazlo · 20 years, 7 months ago
I'm feeling largely left out of what seems to be the main conversation line of this thread dealing with the original subject which consists of discussion of Boar's Head meats which are not kosher. Mildly ironic, seeing as how this thread was started by a Jew. So, Jew-huddle! Um... Hebrew National or Empire? Or... something else? Do you have a favorite kosher Deli?
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
Hebrew National all the way!

My favorite Kosher style deli is Katz's.
My favorite one that is actually Kosher is the 2nd Avenue Deli. The Stage and Carnegie are up there too. They might not actually be kosher, I'm not sure.

One thing that surprised me was that when I mentioned tongue, earlier in the thread nobody said "ewwwww."
Yvonne Back · 20 years, 7 months ago

Ewwwww! ;)

nate... Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
Tongue isn't bad.... just.. a bit chewy.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
Not a good tongue tip. That is as soft as butter.
stealthlori Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
and quite rich tasting. my grandmother used to serve us cold tongue sandwiches.
nate... Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
oh yeah?
Hrm.. I may have just had a not-so-great piece.

It's a girl! Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
Tongue always make me think of the Ramona Quimby books. The mom bought tongue all the time because it was a really cheap cut of meat. It wasn't until I was grown up that I found out real people eat it--- thought it was just something weird in Beverly Cleary books!
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
but it isn't cheap. I wish it was.
renita Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
the girls liked it... but then they realised it was bumpy!

hee!
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
I always liked the idea that it was tongue was tasting you as you were tasting it.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
Ugh. That is so creepy.
stealthlori Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
Yah, but alas most delis aren't kosher. More's the pity. I'd like to see more kosher meats everywhere.

Question for hot-dog connoisseurs: are Nathan's hot dogs kosher? I always thought they were, but the package doesn't say so. *cries*

danced with Lazlo Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
nope, they are not.
nate... Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
no, sorry... my hot dog is not kosher.

*ducks*
stealthlori Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
*snickers*
nate... Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
oh yeah... dude... boar's head ROCKS.

mmm.

sheryls Back · 20 years, 7 months ago

Toledo only ever had 1 kosher deli. It was called Zadies, and it's out of business :( they had *awesome* food. best challah ever.

i love hebrew national hot dogs tho. :D

Nik Chaikin Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
Hebrew National! except when it comes to chickens, Empire chicken is the best.
Will work for anime · 20 years, 7 months ago

the great deli-meat inventions...such as olive-loaf and head cheese ;-)

"and that Oscar Mayer....this guy is inventing meat! I've never seen a pig with little pimentos in it!" ~Jerry Seinfeld

seriously...everytime i'm in canada i would kill for a few nice slices of back bacon on toast with HP sauce....mmmmmmm (ok...tecincally not deli meat...but still my fav)

at home it gotta be bolonge on wheat with provalone cheez.....damn i'm hungry not

Ligeia Lester · 20 years, 7 months ago
I cant believe there is a whole page dedicated entirely to MEAT.

furthermore, I cant believe I just read the whole thing. ugh.
renita Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
nonononono my friend.

not just MEAT. DELI MEAT.

an important distinction, I do believe there are other threads, or perhaps other discussions in past polls that were devoted to MEAT.

but this is a specific discussion.

;)
nate... Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
*I* can believe it....

I mean, really, is there anything better than meat?

Mmmm.
renita Back · 20 years, 7 months ago
well.

yes.... and no ;D

depends on how you read the question *smirk*
