Eggs made in bread.

   Discussion: Eggs made in bread.
nate... · 16 years ago
So, there seem to be a LOT of terms for the process of cutting a hole in the center of bread with a glass, then throwing it on a skillet and cooking an egg in said hole.

I've always know it as a "spit-in-the-eye".

What's your term?

Ditto. Machaneh Ramah. As previously mentioned.

I started a thread by accident. Cool!

See I don't really have an answer because I'd never even heard of it until the past few years and the context in which I started, many names were being used. So...it's all of them to me :)

Oops, wrong website.

Hey, does anybody know where I might find a really big picture of an old-looking postcard from Nevada? I'd prefer something with a cartoony map and an assortment of pictures. Anyone? Anyone? Little help here? Come ON, . . . someone must know where I can find a giant scanned image of a postcard from Nevada circa 1987. . .

Nevada is how you kill pointless threads over on songfight. I forgot where I was for a second. :)

Rimbo Back · 16 years ago
In any case, I've been wormed by "Nevada" from State Songs. Way to go, Josh. :)

"egg-in-a-hole", basically.

It used to be my favorite when I was a kid. Still like it a lot.

dgodwin · 16 years ago
I always learned it as an hobo egg, but that was cooking it on top of a coffee can (heated with a candle?) at girl scout camp (tagged along with the sisters and parent)

toad in the hole, from a kids cookbook. There was a similar term for a similar dish made with sausage, but now I can't remember.
It's a girl! Back · 16 years ago
Isn't the sausage one pigs in a blanket?
Rimbo Back · 16 years ago
Mmmmm, . . . pigs in a blanket . . . I'm going to go and get a McGriddle.
emilie is CRANKY Back · 16 years ago
i thought toad in the hole was sausages in yorkshire puddings. hrm. :D
Rimbo Back · 16 years ago
Actually, that's what I thought, too. Odd, being as I've never had yorkshire pudding before and have no idea what it's like.

From Cooks.com:

TOAD IN A HOLE

1 egg
1 slice bread
3 tbsp. butter

Cut a circle out of center of bread slice. Fry bread in butter until brown and crisp on one side. Turn over and break egg into circle. Fry over low heat for 5 minutes.

Some google searching also turned up Eggs in a poke, Eggs in bread, Eggs in a hole, Toad in a hole, Frog in the hole, Bunny in a hole, Egg in a Nest, Egg in a Saddle, Egg in a Boat, Egg in a Bread Basket, Window Egg, Egg in a Frame, Egyptian Egg, Bird's nests, One Eye, Bulls Eye, Eye Eggs, Egyptian Eyes, Huevo al Hoyo, and one halloween version called Frankenstein's Sandwich.

I aloways called it Toad in a hole myself.

Wow. You just answered the question posed in this poll. Any other postings will be entirely moot.

Yet not one mention of spit in the eye....

i've never heard of or made this concoction.

however, when i went to girl guide camp, we put eggs in ziploc bags and boiled them. they were called "eggs in a bag".

don't do it. don't do it. just... don't do it. wrong. lots of wrong.
