Discussion: What is your favorite cuisine?

"something else".. because what I like is GOOD food... the interesting stuff.
Not tied down to any one "cuisine"... but taking in the influences of all of them.. and making something unique.

It could be argued that this is "american".. but, I disagree, because I've seen many examples in other countries. We are not the only melting pot of cuisines, though we do tend to do more of it....

So yeah.
Uhh.. something else. :)

renita Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
yup. see above.

my favorite foods come from a wide variety of "cuisines"
i like blends and i like purist stuff. but it just has to taste good.
dirty life & times · 19 years, 7 months ago
but only because i'm calling that "food cooked by jews." i have lots of good cooks in my family. :)

(also cause i miss israeli food. sigh. i have sworn off north american falafel: never trust a falafel stand if they don't understand you when you say "pita.")
Bender · 19 years, 7 months ago
I'm fond of Indian, Tibetan, Vietnamese, Chinese (particulary those barbecue houses... ask me about the one where two people can eat their fill for less than $10), Japanese, Cuban, Malaysian, and Honduran.

God, I love living in a city.
Nik Chaikin · 19 years, 7 months ago
Pure comfort food. Always reminds me of my grandma, especialy blintzes*drool*
tibbar · 19 years, 7 months ago
I picked Japanese but only if you exclude sushi. There is so much more to Japanese food than raw fish. But then again I am baised by living in Japan and having a wonderful wife that is Japanese and cooks well.

I prefer a fistful of fresh gach with (living) Ferengi snuf beetles and blood wine :D
Starfox Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
You know there is a recipe for Klingon Blood Wine on the internet?

Usually it's 1 part spiced rum, 1 part tequila mixed with cranberry juice,a dash of grenadine, and a drop or three of tabasco sauce.
Phoenix Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
Cool. Thanks. Never read about this before :)

Eggs, hashbrown caserole, flapjacks, chicken fried steak, baked potatoes with everythin', yuuuummmmyyy!!

Italian and Mexican (TRUE Mexican, not that TexMex crap!) are a close second.

Chinese and some Japanese is third.
Bender Back · 19 years, 7 months ago

TRUE Mexican, not that TexMex crap!

Amen, brother!

J. Andrew World Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
I lived in Texas for 5 years, and I have discovered in this country most Mexican food *IS* Texmex. I have only seen two authentic mexican resteraunts in my life. Everything else is verying degrees of Texmex. Unless it's calimex.
100% dainty! Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
There were places in Tucson that seemed to have authentic Mexican food. Most of it was Sonoran food, of course, but there was one place that was more like Mexico city food. It does seem, however, that most mexican places only offer the usual burritos/enchiladas/tacos, etc.

Just like Chinese places! Agh! They're all Szechuan province stuff, and there is soooo much more really *good* Chinese food that we're missing out on. My boyfriend was in China this summer and brought back a ton of kickass recipes. :)
Starfox Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
Uh, I dunno where you lived in Texas, but REAL mexican food is easily to be had anywhere in the major cities I've been too. Most prevalently in San Antonio, but also some great places is Houston, and there are two or three good places in Fort Worth.

If you're going to a chain store (Don Pablos, On The Border, Dos Gringos, etc) you are most certainly going to get TexMex. Real Mexican food can be had, but not at shiny places with crappy watered down magaritas and Neon lights.

La Fogata and Palmitos in San Antonio is some of the best mexican I've tasted north of the border.
Bender Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
In Atlantic City, the place to go is a restaurant called, aptly, Mexico.

It's so great.

So glad I re-read what you had written before I posted my comment, I read greek/lebanese as greek/lesbian. Thought you were talking about some small restaurant in your area that served greek food.

goovie is married! · 19 years, 7 months ago
do you consider to be american food? just curious.
lawrence Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
anything involving ketchup. :)
iPauley Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
Ahh, ok. So, yes, a garbage plate (which takes on easily a quarter of a small bottle) would be American, then... ;)

-- Pauley
Annika Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
no no, ketchup takes it from being American to being 'mercn.
iPauley · 19 years, 7 months ago
I voted "American," but I really don't know where garbage plates best fit. (Apologies to the link to a GeoCities page. Best link I could find.)

lawrence Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
I really don't know where garbage plates best fit.

I would have to say they fit best in the actual garbage.
iPauley Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
Oh ye of little faith (and structurally unsound stomach). ;)

meh Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
Curse you Pauley!
I had just stopped having such a nasty sharp need to get a garbage plate.
I do not have the money to come to Rochacha to get one.
*pouts*
At this rate, I'm gonna end up having to construct one all on my own here.

;-)
iPauley Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
Recipies exist online that very closely approximate them. I've not tried them, so I can't attest to their accuracy. Some of the more amusing ones make references to drinking as much Genesee beer as you can, pulling a gun and screaming abusively at people, and igniting a grease fire on the griddle. I'm not sure those parts are absolutely necessary for the taste, but may assist in the "experience." :-P

There's this really good Indian/Pakistani stall in the Reading Terminal Market I love.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
Indian was supposed to be a choice, it got lost in the wash it seems.

The best cheap lunch in New York are the $4.95 and $5.95 lunch specials at the Indian restaurants on 6th street. There is one block, I think between 2nd and 3rd avenues where every single business on 6th street is an Indian restaurant.
ChrisChin is Getting Old Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
It's between 1st and 2nd Avenues, which trickles around the corner onto 1st Ave. between 6th and 5th Streets. One of my favorite Indian rstaurants, Rupali, is located on that stretch.

Well, I picked Italian cos I felt like I'd be disloyal to my heritage if I didn't. And I do love it. But there are very few Italian restaurants that I really like. Most of the time, I'll think "I (or my mom) could cook this better and I'd use different spices. Cut back on the oregano, for one thing."

But for a dining out option, Indian is my top choice. Or Chinese. I'd love to try some actual non Americanized Chinese food.

Another thing I like that I don't get too often is Afghani food. mmmm...pumpkin with fresh yoghurt....mmmm aushak...
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 19 years, 7 months ago
Not a choice but I love barbeque in all of its manifestations, espectially Texas.
goovie is married! Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
would you count that as "american"?
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 19 years, 7 months ago
I voted American with that partially in mind.
mim · 19 years, 7 months ago
Ever have Persian food??? If you like Indian, you'll probably love it. It's not as hard hitting as Indian and it uses MUCH more fresh herbs... SO. GOOD. Agglggglgglgllglllglgglglgl.... :)

We have Jewish Persian family friends, so that's what I think of when I think Sephardi Jewish food. But there's a Calcutta Jewish population, so technically some Indian food is Jewish too. Hey... "Jewish" is a religion, not a race, ya'll!

I think by "Jewish food," most assume Ashkenazi... which is almost like German food; namely heavy, greasy, fill-ya-up-in-cold-weather food... and then there's a good Russian borscht... Man, I'm hungry.
