EFO Lately... what do you think?

Discussion: EFO Lately... what do you think?
Songbill · 19 years, 3 months ago
Hey all. I sense Fruheads are not as excited about EFO lately-- perhaps it is the new album (or, of course, that you never cared in the first place.) Anyone care to comment?

My two cents is that I'd much rather listen to the Robbie solo album than "This is Me," not that I think it's a terrible album (Shelly will kill me for this).

Totally.
Robbie needs to play out solo more often.

Mike needs to play solo more, when he opened for Robbie, he blew robbie out of the water!

Shelley will agree, Mike Clem rocks!

Songbill Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
I've not been that impressed with Mike's songwriting as of late. Yes, this is the guy that wrote "Atlantic" and "The Best of Me" which are amazing songs, but personally I don't need to hear "Let's Get Mesolithic" anytime soon again or "No Pain No Problem."

Amen to that.
Ugh.
Awwwful.

See mike perform solo and then talk to me. He doesn't do that stuff, he takes the songs we know Julie for and truly make them his. Plus he has a few songs that are definatly not EFO, but they are still good.
nate... Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
See, I dunno.... NOBODY could possibly save that song.... different performance or not.

The songwriting/lyrics are criminally bad.

nate... Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
Yeah, I kinda lost interest a year or so ago.... unrelated to the album.
*shrugs*

They just don't do much for me anymore.

I've never been particularly excited about them, although I definitely used to be more interested in them a few years ago.

I think a lot of it was that I saw a few disappointing live shows - once where I saw the first two nights of a three night stand at the Birchmere and the two shows were nearly identical, even down to the banter, and the other when I saw them play with the Arrogant Worms in Allentown, and they just had no energy at all.

Plus, it seems every year at Falcon Ridge, people are always going apeshit over them and they end up doing exactly the same thing. There's only so much I can stand hearing Great Day and Operator at the Gospel Wake Up Call.

But I do agree that Robbie solo is more interesting and more varied anyway. There are a few songs where I like Julie's vocals better than his (Bleecker to Broadway is the one that first comes to mind) but for the most part, I prefer hearing him sing his songs. He doesn't overemote the way Julie often does.

I agree... Julie sings... err, too well. It's too pretty and having heard Robbie sing his songs, I like them better in his voice... they seem more genuine that way.

They're pretty okay. I like some of their songs quite a bit. After a while, though, all of their songs start to sound alike.

My dad calls them the "Afternoon Delight Band" because so many of their songs use the harmony from the chorus of that song.

I saw EFO last night and had a lot of fun. From what I've heard of the new CD,it's a bit too country for my taste (I think because of the new producer). However, songs such as "Adios, Lorena" translate much better live. And I love the vocals in the chorus of "This Is Me" that I heard last night.

And I also wish Robbie would play out solo more.

"This Is Me" is a slight change of direction for EFO. It's more country-rock than folk-rock, although that has more to do with Lloyd Maines producing them. But on all but one of the songs, Eddie is playing the drum kit.

Still, some great numbers on the new disc I must say. Fishbowl is still the gold standard, but they aren't slowing down by any means.

Yes. I'd love to know what they were thinking when they were mixing this CD. I like "The Bird" and "And The Rain Crashed Down" on CD, but I think "Adios, Lorena" and "This Is Me" and a few others come off much better live. And I don't like "No Pain, No Problem" at all.

And "don't fall for a girl who fell for a horse" should be everyone's new mantra.:)

Everybody gets the name of that album wrong, even EFO, it isn't "Looking Out the Fishbow.l" It is the "Cow Album." :-)

Sometimes the jokes aren't meant for you.

I gave my mom that album a couple years ago, and she said "hmm...'Eddie from Ohio'...'Looking out the Fishbowl'.....and it's got a cow on it! I love it already!"
derek harrison Back · 19 years, 3 months ago
