Always have... I grew up with PHC.

Saw it live a couple times, too.
Talcott Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Same here.
Well, execpt for the fact that I've never seen it live.

Still, I want to be Garrison Keillor when I grow up.

Oh, and here is the link for those who don't know what we're talking about.
Gordondon son of Ethelred · 20 years, 9 months ago
I just submitted this poll. That was fast.
Andrea Krause · 20 years, 9 months ago
I can't stand listening. Puts me to sleep as I drive.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I knew there was a reason I loved you :-)

I voted for dislike not hate because I sometimes like the music and it is just boring not offensive.
Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Yeah I voted dislike as well. I feel that something that bores me doesn't deserve my hatred, just my near-apathy. :) If it angers me, like certain shock jocks, well then I can say hate. :)
Jºnªthªn Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I went for indifferent, since I couldn't really care less when it's on - sometimes I listen for a while, sometimes I flip the channel. I like some of the Guy Noir stuff, but the homespun wholesomeness generally turns my stomach.
Talcott Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
See, I never actually thought of it as wholesome. It's a lot darker than people give it credit for.
danced with Lazlo Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
It totally is, yes. There's so much violence and death and destruction and black humor under this veneer of wholesome Minnesotaness... that's part of what makes it so funny.
Adam Hartfield Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

You're so wishy-washy! :)

I can't stand PHR (and most of NPR) and voted accordingly.

George E. Nowik · 20 years, 9 months ago

love it. love it love it love it love it love it love it love it.

i've been listening to it for something along the lines of 12 years (i think) now. granted, it was better and much more lively in the earlier days of my listening, but it's still just plain good.

Andrea Krause Back · 20 years, 9 months ago

Was IT better and more lively, or are you just getting old and jaded? :)

goovie is married! · 20 years, 9 months ago
i've been listening to it for, like, eight years now, just about every week. i love the musical guests, the news from lake wobegon, the english majors of america...one thing i can't stand, tho, is guy noir. kill him, kill him, kill him. and bring back those celebrity classic theatre spots, like the trojan war starring mr. rogers and george bush.
Talcott Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
How can you hate Guy Noir?

Did anyone else hear Garrison on Fresh Air? He's working on a full spin-off series for Guy Noir (which would take him off of PHC, so I suppose we'd both be happy then ;-)
goovie is married! Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
yaaaaaaaaay! no more guy noir! *dance*
nate... Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Yeah... I'm not a fan of guy noir either....
Josh Woodward Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
"mee too".
meh Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
*sniffle*

And here Guy Noir is my absolute favorite part of PHC. Followed closely by NfLW, of course.

I had to vote like, rather than love -- can't justify saying I love a radio program if I don't make it a huge point to listen. I stay on it when I hit it cycling through stations. But even then, I usually only stay on if it's during a bit I like, or if I recognize the musical guest.

I did just about give a little old man a heart attack when I worked at Wal-Mart, tho. He was wearing a shirt that said had the Woebegon tagline on it, and I complimented it. I don't think he expected anyone at my age (maybe 17 at the time) to regonize the slogan.

"where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children, are above average.". YAY PHC, YAY NfLW, YAY NPR in general! :)
danced with Lazlo Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Do you remember Buster The Show Dog? Or was that before your time? ;)
stealthlori · 20 years, 9 months ago
I've heard OF it, of course, but I've never been exposed to it. So it's not an issue of what the hell are you talking about, or indifference based on experience, but simply that I have no grounds for an opinion. :)
ChrisChin is Getting Old Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Same situation for me. Know of it, but haven't really heard much of the show and therefore can't formulate an informed opinion.
Gordondon son of Ethelred Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
Since when has being informed ever stopped anyone from having an opinion and voicing it loudly? :-)
K-Lyn · 20 years, 9 months ago

OK..If this question is going to be answered it will be here.

A few years ago I got a Christmas CD of Canadian singers and promptly lost the jewel case. I didn't mean to I just did. Not the end of the world. But it had at the end this long story about Dave and his wife Morilee and their family at Christmas. WE kept saying that it sounded like a Canadian version of PHC (funnier then the US of course) but never were able to find out who or what it was. Then when my boyfriend and I were on the disembarking the ferry from Victoria to Vancouver last summer we heard it on CBC...same guy. Same Dave and Morilee. Different story (a duck had swallowed his wedding ring). But it STILL didn't tell us who or what we were listening to.

Does this ring any bells for ANYONE???? Help!!!!

The Vinyl Cafe is awesome. "We might not be big, but we're small". :) You can listen to CBC radio online too...
Jillian Bird Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I saw him live a few times. He reads his stories and between them, he had a jazz band play a couple of songs. It was so good.
K-Lyn Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I checked out his schedule...I cna't be up in Vancouver on a weekday so I guess I'll have to wait. I'll just order "Dave Cooks a Turkey" onCD to keep myself happy.
I can see the bunny Back · 20 years, 9 months ago
I've been to the live shows for it a few times too, including Christmas shows. Tons of different musicians performing at different times and places. One of the best all around live shows I've seen - comedy, great music, stories. Fun. :)
Bruce Rose · 20 years, 9 months ago

I couldn't figure out where I'd heard of PHC before... but it seemed like a recent thing. So I cheated by reading the results before voting. A friend at work just told me about the show on Sunday and suggested it as something I might enjoy.

For now, what the hell... ask me again in a couple weeks.

Pentecost Andrew! · 20 years, 9 months ago

Dudes,

Garrison Keillor practically raised me. I listened to all of the old taped compilations of his "News from Lake Wobegon" bits as a kid, every night as I was going to sleep. His stories probably had as large an impact on my eventual personality and psyche as Tolkien, Milne, or Dr. Seuss-- other important childhood influences.

ShrinkMan · 20 years, 9 months ago
...Except the annual joke show, which can be quite clever (as I am sure the rest can be as well, but I start getting queasy after only a few moments of the intro and GK's monologue and thus will probably never know first hand.)

Please don't hate me. (too much!)
